Constantine General Discussion Thread

WB struggles to get the original Justice League movie off the ground. I really doubted they were going to get Del Toro's ambitious Justice League Dark off the ground.

They are only shooting the pilot for Constantine. We have to wait and see if NBC greenlights this show and does a series yet.

Justice League Dark will probably never happen. I mean, we don't even have the real Justice League yet.

That would actually be cool....he still should be a Scouser though..

Yeah, the way Moore phonetically wrote Constantine's dialog was just perfect and often hilarious. I don't know if American audiences could handle it though.

Justice League Dark aka Dark Universe has had more development than Justice League. :P

Here’s what Del Toro said when asked about the project during his WonderCon panel:

On Justice League Dark, or Dark Universe, what we’re doing is we finished the bible. Then we’re going to start the screenplay with a writer we hope we can announce very soon. What I’m doing is the lead character that guides us through that is Constantine. Blonde. He is basically trying to recruit these guys. On Etrigan, I’m using Jason Blood in the time of Merlin. We get to their origin through the story. We don’t make the origin story at the top. We find it out as they each have mysteries to solve. Swamp Thing is at peace with who he is, but Deadman still needs to figure out who shot him. It’s all woven in. When I was a kid, my two favorite characters in the whole DC Universe were Etrigan and Swamp Thing, so I’m in heaven.

That we know of, all we know is what Del Toro tells us and not what DC/WB tells us.

I do hope Liz turns out to be Zatanna. Would love to see her and Constantine's relationship on screen.

Do you think they will include his bisexuality since Goyer ignored DeVinci's?

Well maybe they can use this John Constantine if this show is a hit. Otherwise it'd be pretty confusing and pointless to have two at once.

How would it be confusing and pointless? We have had two Clark Kents/Supermans at the same time and we will be having two Bruce Waynes at the same time.

Well, I recognise Matt Ryan from Assassin's Creed IV and, even though I didn't play the whole game, the little I've seen from him does impress me.

Front page story talking about Papa Midnite's involvement says the pilot will begin production in Atlanta, GA.

Papa Midnite? I'm having Trueblood flashbacks.

I needs more castmembers! :argh:

Yeah but Superman is a more well known character. There had been many actors who played the role. Aside from Keanu's butchery, Constantine isn't as widely recognized. It'd be better to try to establish a continuity on the character before having two running around at the same time. Just my opinion of course.

Continuity doesn't confuse anyone because most don't care about it.

In fairness, I don't think we've ever truly gotten two different versions at once, running parallel, with the exception of animated stuff. I don't count Smallville for a multitude of reasons, and with the two Bruce Waynes, one is going to be the adult, the fully formed Batman, and the other is immediately after losing his parents. All that said, I don't think we have to worry about that here. With the way GDT works, as well as how film projects tend to work out for DC, I think it's perfectly conceivable that this film won't happen for quite a long time/possibly at all.

Anyway, Deadline confirmed in their article on pilot filming locations that this will be shot in Atlanta.

The co-creator of Constantine has written an open letter to DC:

Dear DC Comics:

How are you this morning? Nice to hear.

Look, I'm the ONLY original Constantine co-creator active online.

And with CONSTANTINE getting so much attention lately, and me being the only original co-creator online, I'm getting a lot of requests for this and that—interviews. Podcasts. Etc.

Daily.

So, in your corporate mind, what should I do?

Every time you ramp up the Constantine or Swamp Thing whatever, someone at DC apparently resents anything I might say—or so I'm occasionally told—but I have no idea what's going on from your end.

I mean, if you want me "in the loop," or to shut the hell up, or to behave, or to misbehave, or whatever-it-is-you-want, you really DO know how to reach me.

Well, anyhoot, I sincerely hope all is well with you, congrats on the spiffy new TV show upcoming, everyone really seems so excited about it, and since all I see out here is all everyone else sees out here, and it begs so many obvious questions, which people then ask me, directly, I just thought you should know what a conundrum all this is.

And it gets to be more of a quandary daily now.

PS: I appreciate you have "bigger fish to fry." I mean, your NY offices are fighting winter, while you CA offices are in a major draught. It must be hell.

Thanks and take care—stay warm, or have a bottle of water (Hydrate! Hydrate!), and nice per usual to hear from you...

Yours,

"Steve" aka Stephen Bissette

Lucy Griffiths & Harold Perrineau Join NBC Pilot ‘Constantine’
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

True Blood alumna Lucy Griffiths has been cast as the female lead opposite Matt Ryan in NBC’s drama pilot Constantine, from Warner Bros TV. Also cast in the project, based on the characters in DC Comics’ John Constantine stories are Lost alum Harold Perrineau and Charles Halford (True Detective). Constantine centers on John Constantine (Ryan), an enigmatic and irreverent con man-turned-reluctant supernatural detective who is thrust into the role of defending us against dark forces from beyond. When Liv (Griffiths), the daughter of a late friend, is targeted by demons, Constantine steps in to save her. Griffiths’ Liv is an offbeat young woman tired of her ordinary life who comes to discover that she has the ability of seeing the supernatural world among us, which makes her a key player in the battle between good and evil. Liv teams up with Constantine to save lives, master her power, and learn more about her late father. Perrineau will play Manny, an authoritative angel assigned to watch over Constantine who has the power to step into other people’s bodies, and although he is meant only to observe, Manny will not hesitate to help out if he can save a life. Halford will play Chas, Constantine’s oldest friend and staunch companion who possesses powerful survival skills that might possibly be supernatural. Constantive was written by Daniel Cerone from a story he co-penned with David S. Goyer. British actress Griffiths, repped by DBA, Principal Entertainment LA and UK’s Hamilton Hodell, is coming off a two-season co-starring turn on True Blood as Eric’s (Alexander Skarsgard) sister Nora and previously starred as Maid Marian on the BBC drama Robin Hood. APA-repped Perrineau most recently co-starred in The Best Man Holiday and completed David Ayer’s Sabotage.
I was hoping when I read Perrineau's name that he'd be Midnite.

But, hey, we have a Chas that isn't played by Shia Lebouf.

Chas is, yes. The other two, no, though the Liv character does seem somewhat Zatanna-esque.

One hell of a week for WB. Great casting!

Seriously they are going to make Chas a supernatural character again

The whole point of his character is he is Constantine's normal grounded best friend who gets dragged into his crazy adventures. Atleast he isn't an annoying like wannabe Constantine this time around.

They should of cast Harold Perrineau as map. Good group of actors thought.
