No smoking thing is just dumb, one of the most critically acclaimed shows of all time has characters lighting up regularly in Mad Men and we can't get one character doing it?

My favorite part of the pilot was
The end when you found out that a good portion of the events were just so that Constantine would get Liv to help him without actually having to ask.

Really enjoy Matt Ryan. He isn't perfect, but as other shows have shown lead actors can really grow into their roll, and he's not off to a bad start.

Matt Ryan was wunderbar as Constantine! This was even better than the Flash pilot!

I only disliked Manny, because it seems:
You're meant to dislike this Angel, which i'm worried is because David S. Goyer wants to be so edgy and i'm assuming he's atheist? Too lazy to wikipedia, just kinda worried about how they're gonna portray Angels.

Well Gabriel (whether the comic version or Tilda Swinton) wasn't exactly the nicest Angel you want to be around (save for Ellie's lover Tali). Same goes for the two Angels in HB #105 that John ancestor had an encounter with that were using Rich Eldridge's (John' mate from the Jenkins era) ancestor to spread the word via dictating it in writing

From what I've heard, there is a Swamp Thing easter egg... Not sure what.

Nothing to do with Goyer being edgy. The portrayal of Angels is consistent with how they were shown in the Hellblazer comics. Specifically the Garth Ennis run of Constantin. Ennis has a complicated view of Christianity which comes from him growing up in sectarian Northern Ireland which is reflected in his work on Hellblazer, Preacher, The Punisher and so on.

In the comics angels generally lack empathy for humans particularly on a individual level and aren't necessarily 'good guys'. They can be as complex as humans.

When John Constantine asked Gabriel to help him out with his lung cancer, using an Gabriel's unpaid debt to him. Gabriel turned him down and told John to just die for his sins. Enraged, Constantine planned a scheme involving Gabriel falling for a woman, who actually is Ellie the succubus. His heart was ripped out of him during their sex, thus rendering mortal. By securing Gabriel's heart, John managed to make Gabriel do his bidding. It was short lived though, as Gabriel is later murdered by The First of the Fallen.

The lack of cigarettes is a deal-breaker for me. It's not just a small part of the character that you can toss aside like a... well, cigarette.

I think what people think is a Swamp Thing references is actually the DCU version of Pandoras Box. It makes sense if you have read the New52 and look at the item.

There might also be a Shazam egg in it.

Constantine is a smoker in the new TV-series, he is in the pilot, its just that NBC wont let them show him smoking or actually lighting up a smoke and inhaling :).

Honestly this whole smoking tantrum the internet has is petty.
Also pilot's tend to be rough. If they are part of a tiny limited run(like 6-8 eppys) they tend to be much stronger. I think we have a nice foundation right now. These are pretty much "We got potential, gives up an episode order".

Just saw the pilot.

Good stuff. Of course, it's not capturing the full potential of the source material (especially when it comes to atmosphere. A few too many scenes in suburbia), but I'm stoked for what it was able to bring to life, and I think the negatives (a couple of which could just be attributed to the nature of a pilot) can be easily corrected moving forward. Very excited to have a Constantine TV series at all.

Did Constantine say
First of the Fallen? They can't use the big bad this early can they?

Yeah he did. I don't think any serious Hellblazer arcs are going to be adapted anytime soon. It's going to be New 52 in terms of story, characters and feel but John is going to touch his Hellblazer roots. I can see maybe elementso of Milligans run but the non smoking thing prohibits the use of Brendan Finn and the cancer and the sex factor says no to Ellie and half of Delano's run with many birth/rebirth and erotic parallels also John's bisexuality. Am i assuming too much ?

I think the extreme elements of Hellblazer won't be used but some of the plots and storylines will be used. We won't see John peeing on vampires or flipping the first of the fallen the middle finger but there is still plenty to take from 20 plus years of Hellblazer comics.

They already touched Hellblazer plots like Newcastle and mentioned the first or the fallen and Nergal

I think you could do ellie the succubus. They don't actually have to show Chantinelle sleeping with angels. You can imply or state a relationship without showing a sex scene.

Don't count on it, my pro New52 chum....

Was Nick Necro mentioned? No
Was a genderbending Sargon namechecked? No

To answer the last question: you are assuming too much

Thanks guys I thought I heard that name too.

Oh is this going to be like 22 episode season? I'd prefer it if it was something like what Sleepy Hollow did last year which had 13 episodes.

It's in the timeslot that Hannibal usually has, so I think even if the show continues past one season, it'll have a shorter order of episodes per season than the usual, to make way for Hannibal when the time comes. Either that or find a different timeslot at some point, but I doubt it.

Thanks good to know I actually prefer if they are shorter seasons. Takes away the chance of any filler episodes and gets straight into the overall arc of the season. As you can't be seen messing about in a few episodes if you're only scheduled for 13 episodes say.

I really liked that pilot. Better than Flash's. They got the character right.

Suggestions:
- less jump scare, more disturbing psychological horror
- needs better and slower pacing (my favorite horror movies aren't fast-paced)
- less magical spells, more conning from John (although this pilot has that too)
- polish the humor bits
- make it edgier and ballsier

It's a solid 7.5/10, and it's promising. Matt Ryan's a great John and he's just beginning.

i hate to say it. but this show does not interest me at all.

this is coming from someone that doesn't read Hellblazer though.

i know this is blasphemy, but i loved Keanu's Constantine, and from what I've seen of this new show, I prefer Keanu's version. I realize his version isn't nearly as comics accurate.

I'll wait til i see the pilot to fully judge though.

The most interesting part of this show to me is the fact that they're incorporating Doctor Fate and probably some other DC characters. That's so awesome. But idk... everything else isn't doing it for me.

I'm really not trying to be negative. But I'll probably be watching just for DC references

The one problem I had with the pilot is that I felt like I was jumping into the middle of the overall story. Other than that I enjoyed it. I hope the show is successful like Grimm is.
