Apocalypse Costumes of the 80s

my problem is that the X-Men really have horrible boring costumes in the comics for years. I don't see the point to make the movie X-Men look like power rangers...honestly what is exciting about these X-Men designs for example?

I cannot watch The Avengers without to start laughing how bad Captain America and Thor looks like. I prefer some costumes like the DoFP future looks. Or these unused designs:

Your reaching the Xmen don't look like power rangers and it's a fantasy comic book so they can have extravagant colors, you picked one costume for your scan and saying the costumes in the comics are bland, that's not enough. They have plenty of different constumes that can translate well into the big screen no problem. Captain Anericas costume looked perfectly fine your expecting them to just stay in plain leather, what's the big deal with color from a fantasy movie? As I said they need to get away from the plain boring leather it's dead. The designs can easily be translated into movie verse without being campy. You just want the same colors over again and say it'll look like power rangers just because they have colors in costumes. Really, I can't.

Well, those new O5 costumes are also particularly horrible
The comics have been pretty hit or miss with costumes over the past few years

but it would be sweet if they could at least start pulling in elements from some of the more recognizable X-outfits (90's era, New X-men, Whedon's run)

Wolverine gettin some more yellow and having tiger stripes
Cyclops rocking blue and a chest utility belt
Nightcrawler in something black-and-red-and-acrobatic
Storm was the only one of the old Black Leather costumes that worked, because they had the cape and the silver accents, show a bit more skin and she was spot on

I don't want to be rude but I think we have a different understanding what the genre "fantasy" means and I wouldn't say that the X-Men movies belong into this particualr genre...there is a very dark and serious tone in these movies and this should also be reflected in the costumes.

I am not a fan of superhero costumes on screen in general. They looks ALWAYS silly. All the example who look decent turned their back tremendously on the comic designs. The recent ok Captain America design is a good example for that.

what in the world are you talking about?
the Cap design, while not dead-on comic accurate, had enough similarities that it is precisely what one would picture to be a "real-world adaption" of the comic costume
Iron Man mk 3 was Adi Granov's comic IM
Winter Soldier was ripped straight off the page
Thor's costume keeps getting closer and closer to the comics, and he looks better each time
Hulk is spot on, Widow was spot on in TWS, and that was her best look

and, as for the X-films, the best costumes were Storm's from the old films (quite accurate compared to the others, as I mentioned above) the FC blue-and-yellow uniforms, and the quick glimpse of Wolverine's mask in the deleted scene of the Wolverine

the closer costumes get to the comics, while still being designed well and with detail and texture, the better they look

Watchmen is far from being a light-hearted movie and the uniforms are colorful.

And X-Men movies are not that dark. They're just serious.

Yes we'll keep it cute. Human beings with superpowers and different races is definitely fantasy science fiction because it's not real so your point? It still is indeed fantasy regardless how dark the stories, no one is saying they need to be hot pink and neon green outfits so what are you talking about. They can easily tone down the colors and NOT have it just be black leather. Captain America design was spot on and looked just like an adaptation from comic to movie done right.

If there's anyone that should be black leather it should be Storm.

I say bring on her Giant-Sized X-men costume. :D Though no need for it to be a bathing suit. Have it be a one-piece.

It's too plain for my liking.

Obviously for X-men costumes, they would have to add a lot of individualized elements to the design.

Heck "non-X-men" Banshee, Beast, Havok, Xavier, Magneto and Mystique had more elaborate costumes in FC than this.

it looks like a modernized version of the FC suits

I prefer a nice minimalist design. Don't know why movies feel the need to add all sorts of pointless trinkets to the suits.

Ugh.

The FC outfits were meant to look like the comic outfits but they were not meant to have any X's on it because they were not the x-men

When it comes to that outfit... I agree it may be a bit plain for an x-men outfit

I don't know if I would call them "horrible" and "boring". But most of the costumes in the comics are just made for style and visual appeal.... there's practically no reason for wearing them. The X insignia is the only thing needed IMO. Like when I buy a new comic... I suddenly Psylocke/Storm are wearing a different costume that looks totally different from their last one.

So far this is my outlook on the costume:

Apocalypse: Cool armour with Egyptian theme, face doesn't look like Apocalypse due to the blue/purple and no mouth lines, it's a shame but I'm confident he'll he an awesome villain and that to me is better than an accurate look but mediocre impact

Magneto: Amazing, his best look yet, love the lines, colour and the helmet looks incredible

Psyclocke: Perfection. One of the most accurate costumes ever.

Storm: Looks awesome, love the outfit and the hair

Archangel: Looks awesome, only nitpick is that he's not blue and not headgear, other than that he's perfect.

Mystique/Quicksilver: Look fine, nothing really special but an upgrade over the DOFP black suits. Disappointed that Mystique so far is only shown in human form, doesn't make sense.

Nightcrawler: Not feeling this look, the hair just ruins it for me.

Jubilee: Looks fab

OVERALL OPINION:

This is the most colourful and accurate roster of X-Men characters yet and that is to be celebrated greatly

Nightcrawler seems to have his X-Men: evolution look going on and looks like he is wearing a black and red outfit which doesn't look like the thriller one from the mall

I wonder if Jubilee is the reason they end up with colour in the costumes. In this series it still doesnt really make sense to have colour but Jubilee may be the character that changes that even with a simple "Why do I have to wear black" line

she is described as "fasionable" in entertainment weekly so that is possible

My critique with Magneto's costume is that it looks like something Sunfire would wear with what looks like the rising sun motif.

But Psylocke looks perfect on that cover.

Also Nightcrawler seems to be wearing a suit jacket in that EW photo.

We still haven't gotten a glimpse of the new mutants' costumes, but so far I'm loving everything except the pitch black Mystique/QS costumes. If Jennifer Lawrence had a ginger wig in that picture I would guess it's a still from MOCKINGJAY, not X-Men.

yeah, I think Jubilee might have input on the colors.

Apocalypse-He looks ok (and lets face it, his design has always been goofy). He's got that "pharaoh" thing going on with his head-piece which is a nice touch.

Storm-She looks great. As an unabashed fan of the Mohawk, the fact that they've made it looks so good makes me giddy. She seems to be wearing a more "classical" type of costume though (not a bad thing, merely making an observation).

Magneto-He looks great as well. It's the most "theatrical" costume that he's had in these films thus far.

Psylocke-It's weird, I love everything BUT the costume. Love the hair, the Katana, the purple psychic energy emitting from her hand, her pose, etc. But I always hated that costume. I've never subscribed to the "it's iconic/comic book accurate, therefore it's automatically good" line of thinking. It's a ridiculous (not in a good way) costume and the stuff that Munn has said about how it works makes me like it even less. And it's annoying that they finally decided to be more "accurate" and they pick THIS thing to do it with. Her current look, or her Uncanny X-Force one, would have been so much better.

Jubilee-She looks great, no complaints. I do wonder if she'll end up cutting her hair at some point, but we'll see.

Jean Grey-Obviously we haven't seen her costume yet, but her civilian look is pretty good.

Cyclops-Same thoughts as Jean.

Mystique-She looks ok. I like the shorter hair.

Archangel-He looks good. It'd be nice if he were blue, but it's not essential for me.

Nightcrawler-He looks good as well. I like the goofy jacket a lot actually.

Overall, things are looking pretty good so far.

I'm not sure what you mean but JLaw has longer hair in the movie. It looks like she has permed/curly hair that's in a a pony tail that falls on her left side (see Comic-con trailer where she's running after "Charles!" in the Cerebro hall.

And I agree, I'm loving Nightcrawler's jacket ;)

That would be quite a turn around from the "yellow spandex" line in the first X-Men.
