Civil War Crossbones

Well said.

There was nuance to Rumlow. The scene where Bucky is being mind wiped again. The camera lingers on Rumlow a couple of times and we can see in his face that he maybe questioning the treatment of him. In fact you could even go as far to say he looks kinda disgusted. But at the same time he truly believes in HYDRA's end game and that sometimes you have to do things you might not like to get the job done.

Yeah, in the scene he also looks back as he and Pierce exited the room. Nice little touch.

What's kind of amusing to me is that in several superhero movies recently, the "henchmen" are getting more love/attention then the main villains. Trevor & Savin in IM3, Kurse in TDW, Faora in MOS, etc.

Well that's probably because, Malekith and Zod were both less interesting than their henchmen; Trevor had the big plot twist, and Savin was really a pretty huge part of IM3 (although I still really like Killian as the big bad)

In this movie, We had a bureaucrat big bad, an anti-hero-we-know-he-becomes-a-good-guy Main Villain, an evil AI, and a throw away first act bad guy.

Rumlow was left as the real kinda dick bad guy/match for cap/thorn in the heroes' sides character.
And he pulled it off with aplomb.

We can safely say this movie has one of the best (if not the best) array of villainy on show in a CBM. Another feature in its cap (bad pun intended!).

he and Falcon killed it. it's so good to see side characters give 100%. it's too bad that Savin isn't around. i'd pay to see he and Brumlow interact.

Definitely. Rumlow did a great job filling the role of the big, tough, vicious henchman working for the Big Bad. Even though his role was a smaller one, the writing and the acting made his character work well and gave him some moments to shine.

When the script and/or the actor gives some actual personality to the big strong henchman, it can turn a relatively minor role into a memorable character. This happened with Rumlow in TWS, Savin in IM3, Juggernaut in X3, etc.

If any other actor had been cast, even with the decent writing for Rumlow, I think his character would've drowned.

Grillo added a ton of layers to his character -- there was definitely a part of him that seemed to admire Cap,
that also seemed slightly disgusted with the programming of Bucky, but he was also a dedicated HYDRA servant, and he wasn't going to be deterred from his bosses. His injuries from Falcon will provide even more motivation for him to go completely batcray-cray in the next Cap movie!

With a lesser actor, a lot of more humanizing nuance would've gotten lost. Grillo nailed a whole bunch of this in the limited screentime he got.

Also, I desperately want Sin to join Cap 3. Preferably played by Ruth Wilson. Or Lena Headey.

Is Crossbones enhanced in any way in the comics? While Rumlow was clearly a highly trained and dangerous fighter, I don't think he'd give Cap much trouble in a fair one-on-one (not many people would :oldrazz: )

If he's gonna have a bigger role as a villain, they might have to boost him up a bit.

Yeah and he might have some tech in his suit that augments his strength next time we see him. Trained humans like Batroc can give Cap a run for his money, even thoguh Batroc ended up getting his ass handed to him on a silver shield.

Just remembered why I grew up with thinking that Crossbones was augmented. When fought Daredevil in the 'Streets of Poison' arc, D/D seemed to read that Rumlows metabolism was so strong that he was like Cap.

I am fairly certain we'll see Rumlow turned into a super soldier, given that some kind of superhuman treatment is the only way I could buy him ever fighting again. He kind of had 3rd degree burns over his entire body, after all.

Given his skillset, as long as it isn't a straight one on one fight, Crossbones should give Cap some serious problems.

well Hydra might have possession of a super soldier serum by then (or whatever they used on Bucky). i wonder if Brumlow will also get some kind of mental reprogramming. i can see him being vengeful. but comic book Crossbones was a complete psychopath.

Eh, once he dropped all pretense, he seemed pretty psychopathic. Order through pain, and all. He's just very good at hiding it.

Rumlow's partner looked pretty menacing as well. As far as "henchmen" go, they did a great job in TWS (just like everything else!)

Whatever happened to that guy? I saw the movie twice and I can't remember when the last time we saw him.

Could you tell me what trade that arc is collected in?

It was 12 on 1 in that elevator, with magnetized handcuffs and electric batons and Cap still rather easily kicked Crossbones to the ceiling.

A serious problems is more the Winter Soldier. But when push came to shove Cap broke his arm and choked him out - and he was going easy on him.

You're talking about Rollins right? The guy who asks about Cap jumping with no parachute? The last we see him is during the WSC scene at the climax. [blackout] He's the one who pulls a gun on WSC members when they order him to arrest Pierce. Then when Black Widow reveals herself I believe he's K.O.ed when Widow slams his head into the table. That's the last we see him and it's unclear it's hard to tell if that section of The Triskelion collapsed or if he came to and made it out. Although Rumlow did survive being buried in rubble.[/blackout]

Crossbones is going to need some type of boost in order to be a challenge to Captain America.

That's a good point.

Maybe the movieverse should just bite the bullet and say hydra works out the super soldier serum and gave it to crossbones. There's really so many characters who have something similar to it anyway and it doesn't make Steve any less special because it's his values that make him different.

I really hope they go all out with crossbones next time. I loved the movie but I kept feeling sorry for crossbones because he was a slave to the mentality that he was "just following orders". He doesn't seem like the sadistic monster that he is in the comics

Winter Soldier had the SSS in him, so clearly HYDRA has a variation of it. You could also say that maybe Crossbones gets some kind of tech/cybernetic enhancements as a result of being maimed at the end of TWS.
