Darkman vs Unbreakable, what's the better comic booky movie?

unbreakable came out in 1999 right before Spider-man came out and began the wave of superhero films.

I always felt Unbreakable came out before its time...The film is a cult classic and incredibly way better than a cheesefest Darkman film.

People just dont know movies if they are saying "Darkman hands down wins"

I'm going to echo the sentiments of everyone else who voted for Unbreakable. It has a really good story and interesting themes on the superhero genre. While I enjoy Darkman, and think it's pretty original, I think its a little too campy to have the serious-ish tone it does. A more comedic tone, in the Evil Dead II vein, would have been better fit for Darkman's b-movie feel.

^I'm thinking that's why I never took to Darkman, it tries to be both campy and serious at the same time. I love both, but not mixed.

I would love a complete serious take on the character without the camp

at the same rate, I would also love an "evil dead" take (as you put it) on the character as well

1 or the other

Darkman, at heart, is a monster movie. It's Frankenstein-esque. So, it's meant to be over-the-top. In a way, it's similar to Edward Scissorhands, another film released in 1990. The horror elements blend in well with the campy superhero stuff because of the tone. The tone is consistant throughout the picture. Everything is over-the-top regardless of whether the scene is serious, funny, or action-packed.

Unbreakable came out in 2000 after X-Men. X-Men started the superhero movie wave. Not Unbreakable.

Spider-Man was the movie that REALLY started the wave. X-Men was just the appetizer.

Spider-Man was the movie that REALLY started the wave. X-Men was just the appetizer.

After X-Men's unexpected 50mil opening weekend Spider-man's production time was lengthened significantly and budget increased in order to make it 'more epic'(their words.
So no, it started with X-men, X-Men had a knock on effect on Spider-man's success.

Spider-Man opened with a record-breaking $114 million. It went on to gross $403 million and become the highest grossing movie of 2002. So, really, it was Spider-Man. X-Men was a hit, but not a mega-hit. It didn't motivate every single studio in Hollywood to start looking for superheroes to adapt.

X Men may have been a success, but it wasn't because of their success that a Spider-Man film was made but because of Spider-Man's success that all the other films followed

But if X-Men wasn't successful there wouldn't be Spider-Man and therefore superhero movies wouldn't be around right now. :woot:

Now back to the topic. IMO, Unbreakable is the better movie but Darkmanfar more entertaining.

Unbreakable. Hitchcock returned from the grave, temporarily possessed Shyamaladingdong and crafted this superb piece of cinema.

That's funny because Daredevil was already in production before Spider-man even came out, I wonder what successful superhero movie caused Fox to greenlight that film eh?
Jake and my points stand, X-Men's unexpected 50mil weekend opening sent a shockwave through the industry. Hell, they even had Sarah Michelle Gellar comment on the phenomenon in an episode of Sex and the City, 'It opened big...but not 'X-Men' big.'
and yeah, Catman, X-Men did make studios look at what other superhero movies to adapt, it's a fact buddy, there were sh movies put into production and pre-production after X-Men and before Spider-man came out.
And as I said, Spider-man was initially not as epically planned out until they took a look at what X-Men did at the BO. They extended it's production time and budget and put it's release date back by almost a year.
edit: but Jake, your last point is wrong, spider-man would have been made regardless of X-Men's success, as it was already in the pre-production planning stages, but it is doubtful whether it would have had as much of a budget or time spent on it if not for X-Men's success, so it may not have had as big an impact if not for the muties.

I'd say Blade got the spark going again, X-Men opened the door, and then Spider-Man went in shooting.

Darkman is better at being comic booky. Unbreakable is comic booky movie.

If that makes sense.

I'd say Blade got the spark going again, X-Men opened the door, and then Spider-Man went in shooting.

and then Ant-Man went crawling up the audience's trouser leg causing them to wonder what the hell was going on. :awesome:

But, yeah, that is a nice way of putting it, , I'm not sure about Blade's impact in a practical manner, ie studios taking notice and discussing making more cb movies because of it, but it certainly gave the fans some hope there was life in the old cb adaptation genre yet.

I think it's funny this is being discussed in a Darkman/Unbreakable thread, as neither movie had any impact whatsoever on the progress and survival of the cb/sh genre in practical terms.(apart from Raimi getting some practise in for SM)

M. Night Shyamalan has completed a script for a new film and already has some stars lined up, reports Heat Vision.

Outside of a "loosely attached" cast that includes Bruce Willis, Bradley Cooper and Gwyneth Paltrow, almost nothing is known about the project. Shyamalan is reportedly shopping the script to various studios with his trademark secrecy, offering reads to only to highest level executives with a personal assistant on hand at all times to take the script back once the read is completed.

hmmmm

I am partial towards Darkman because I am a fan of men becoming monsters. Along with the frankenstein feel. Darkman isn't as good as Unbreakable for me but it has a higher replay value just because I'm partial to key things.

Unbreakable is one of those films where I can't really watch it with anyone else. I can't be sitting there watching it with another person who is very impatient by nature.

that's a huge pet peeve of mine, whether it's a tv show or a movie, watching anything with anyone that's preoccupied with other things is damn annoying. Like damn, you can't go 2 maybe 3 freaking hours without texting your damn g/f every 10 minutes

ppppffffffftttttttttt

**** annoys me to no end

It's time for Blade to come back.

Ya Damn Right! If Blade is only good when vampire's are popular, then right now is the BEST time for a Blade franchise

I'd be nice to see someone actually kicking vampire ass for a change.
