David Fleming & John Murphy/The Score & Composer Thread

I will always truly believe that the Williams theme for Superman is the definitive theme for the character, much like the Bond, Star Wars, or Star Trek themes are.

IMO, Gunn should do exactly what Singer and Ottman did with SR. Use Williams score as the main theme for Superman and let Murphy score the rest of the film around it and add his own touches.

There's a reason why in sports arenas, media, and in just about every other medium the Williams Superman theme is still used rather Zimmer's or any other one. It's associated with the character almost as much as the logo.

Sure, but the problem is that Superman didn’t originate in film. As a comic-book character, he doesn’t really have a definitive sound. I love the Williams theme (and the Zimmer theme, for that matter), but I’m hoping for some new material.

Unfortunately, I don’t think Murphy is a very talented composer, so maybe the smartest move is to fall back on Williams’ classic.
James Bond doesn’t originate in film… or Shaft… or Jaws…

Williams's theme for Superman is just as iconic as Elfman's theme for Batman but there is room for another iconic theme just like how Zimmer has done for TDK trilogy.

Imagine hearing the Elfman theme when you finish watchin Batman Begins, it wouldn't make sense.

The score can make or break a film.
It's gotta hit you in the feels or it's failed, and can completely ruin an otherwise great scene.

Nah, there's composers that can make a good Superman theme. As stated previously, we just had a good one for Cavil. Problem is, this guy may not have the chops for it.

The Batman has a better theme than the Nolan trilogy. I said it. :o

I had to go onto YouTube to be reminded of what The Batman's theme sounded like. :whoops: Yeah it's pretty good though.

No argument here. Zimmer's work in TDK trilogy never stood out that much for me. In contrast, the score for The Batman has become one of my favorites ones.

Bane's theme and the Joker theme are the only things I really remember. Selina's too.

That's two more than me lol. The Joker's theme is the only one that I would recognize. Time to put Spotify to work and give those a listen again.

Well Bane has the chanting that everyone said sounds like "This is Arkham, Arkham".

I may have a vague recollection of that. The Nolan trilogy never quite clicked with so that's probably why my memory is fuzzy despite Zimmer being a great composer.

A derivative of the Elfman theme. How reductive.

I can't even remember what TDK themes sound like off the top of my head. I was literally trying to recall what it was while reading through the comments. Elfman's though I can easily start humming on command, and I've probably seen the Nolan movies way more and more recently. BTAS also has a great theme.

Hearing music from the movie is the next big thing I am most excited for. Now that we have pictures of costumes and characters, i want to hear the theme. Please John Murphy, PLEASE make something good.

I actually wouldn't mind if they just used the Williams theme again. I truly hear it as just a Superman theme, not necessarily a Richard Donner movie theme.

If you do not remember these themes, then I have a hard time believing you watched the movies.

This doesn't mean you need to like them of course. But come on. They chant Bane's theme in the movie. :funny:

See the bottom 2 I can remember

Joker's theme is all time distinct. It's never left my head. Nothing else sounds like that. Or at least didn't until that movie.

Anyways on Superman. I agree with FC. No reuse. Each theme should be distinct to that version of the character. Just sad Zimmer's MOS GOATness was wasted on Cavill's. :weeping:

Listen if we're talking about Batman themes, nothing has topped these two for me personally :batman:

The latter I agree with, not the former. Shirley's theme is vastly superior to the Elfman theme to me, which is why they never really used the Elfman theme in scoring the actual episodes. Giacchino's theme is a close second for me with the church bells and other Gothic elements.
