to be honest all of the shortlist directors are pretty solid
Matt Reeves is a good director, competent!
I don't get the mixed response.
But that flew out the window weeks ago...Because Rupert did it right the first time and I wanted him back.

Rupert's sensibilities really worked for Rise.
I don't think it will be so easy to replicate. Hope I'm wrong though.
At least the first movie can serve as a template to build off of.
Do Ruperts sensibilities really need to be replicated though? This story very well be very different than that of the first movie. Reeves brings a lot to the table himself.
You know Serkis has been doing some second unit directing on the Hobbit. I wonder if his new experiences will be a resource this film can draw from.
Things like the interaction between the apes and how sympathetic the plight of the apes was is essential to the entire theme and narrative. The series could easily turn into a soulless action movies without these details.
And I personally think Reeves might stand to do one better on that front. Almost everything he's worked on has been relationship based. Even on something Cloverfield, the relationship aspects are the only parts he focuses on in interviews and commentaries. The main question here is who is writing the script?
