Fox or not, it is a SHAME when a good movie by a really talented director like Baz Luhrmann bombs and a crap christmas movie starred by Vince Vaugh actually opens in first place.

********. A talented director made Four Christmases. His name is Seth Gordon and he did a little film called THE KING OF KONG: Fistul of Quarters. You probably haven't heard of it, but it was a delightful documentary. Four Christmases was hardly high art or excellent cinema, but during the holiday season when lots of families are going to the movies, that's more of the type of movie they will pick to see.

Don't forget that Moulin Rouge didn't do all that hot either, but it's still pretty highly recognized as a classic now.

At least Fox let Baz do the movie he wanted to do, with a long running time and not jumping on the MTV style people like so much these days. Kudos to them. And I am betting TDTESS will surprise a lot of people.

I dunno, in a way, I thought Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet very much epitomized the kind of MTV style. And the youth loved those flicks.

I think the inclusion of Leo in the former and the music video style for the latter, including the Lady Marmalade thing, attracted the kids, like you said. Austrailia seems to be a real artistic type of thing, but I think people are confused as to what it is. I said it's like it's trying to be a period/adventure/drama/musical/semi-campy type thing.

She never said the director wasn't talented, she said the movie was a piece of crap. Also making 1 "delightful" documentary does not make you a talented movie director, jesus.

King of Kong was one of the best movies of last year. Seth Gordon is talented.

True, that movie was great. Four Christsmas is his first studio gig so people should give him a break. They have to start somewhere. Look at the director of this movie, he started working on a crappy Hellraiser dtv movie, and now he's doing a huge blockbuster.

A huge blockbuster that looks like re-heated WOTW wannabe crap, but still.

Fox doesn't know how to market this movie since they are marketing it like ID4 as that's above and beyond pretty much the exact opposite of the themes, tone, and spirit of The Day The Earth Stood Still.

I don't get why Fox is marketing this as a film where "we fight back." Didn't they have to listen to a logline for this film? So why are they presenting this as if they have no clue what this is about?

Eh whatever, I don't think it was a bad movie. Just more like a disposable netflix rental.

This movie I think looks more like the sux as well as Fox's marketing campaign which is all wrong and a betrayal to the original movie.

Fox knows what this movie is about, but they probably feel that marketing the movie as what it should be would be too risky when it's supposed to be a tentpole for the masses. The inherent problem is spending hundreds of millions on a remake of TDTESS as a tentpole for the masses. Kind of like spending similar money on a live action DB movie that should never be made.

its called marketing for a reason papo:whatever:

Then the marketing for this movie = ep1c fail.

Marketing for Dragon Ball movie = non-existent.

Still, history shows that people don't like having their expectations thrown for a loop. I get the feeling that this is going to have the pace of an Ang Lee film. People are not going to be showing up for long if they're marketing this as a slam-bang action film and a sizeable portion ends up being devoted to quiet moments.

even though i agree that the marketing for this movie ain't that great....i still wanna see it. i've always wanted to see the original, but it's simply just too damn old. i tried watching the original King Kong right before Jackson's Kong hit theaters and i couldn't do it just cuz it was too damn old. so i'm looking forward to this updated version.

don't gimme that BS. you were acting smart, otherwise you would have just asked me what you JUST asked me.

i don't necessarily LIKE or PREFER black and white flicks, but that doesn't mean that i can't watch them. i don't go out of my way to watch them, but if family or friends want to watch then, depending on the plot, subject, themes, etc. i'll give it a try if it's not effects heavy.
Thank you for clearing that up. And, again, I'm sorry if you thought I was being smart, but I wasn't. At least not trying to be.

I'd like to suggest we all end this bickering. Getting a bit too heated.

Hey, look. It is his opinion, and, I do respect it. But, I can make fun of it. As he can with mine. That's the point.

But, dorkyfresh, if I offended you, I do apologize. No hard feelings.

Thank you for clearing that up. And, again, I'm sorry if you thought I was being smart, but I wasn't. At least not trying to be.
you're welcome. i'm not sure the best way to respect others' opinions is to mock them (see your Star Wars post) but thanks for the apology. you're obviously more of a man than the Squirrel.

My dad and I saw a TV spot for this on Thanksgiving. He is not happy that this movie is being remade.

Doesn't help that it looks like ****, as far as I'm concerned.

Oh, well now I'm just going to cry. :whatever:
if it doesn't bother you, then why comment on it?

But hey, I guess I focus more on story than effects.
if i wanted JUST the story, i'll read the book. i can't enjoy a movie if there are effects that are SEVERELY outdated. not just a little outdated like Star Wars or even Logan's Run. i'm talking SEVERELY outdated to the point where a pre-teen could recreate the same thing. it comes across as cheesy and unbelievable to me. again, i fully understand that they were the $#!+ back in the day, but we're not back in the day anymore. if my opinion bothers you so much then you should probably get over it.

Well if they were just remaking the same script but with new effects that would be one thing. But the fact that they have most likely changed themes and major plot points, it is worth it to see the original.

well, i can't be sure, but from what i've heard and read they're trying to stay as close to the original as possible. for instance, there were rumors that Gort wouldn't be in it, but we all know he is. there were similar rumors about 'Klaatu Barada Nikto'. if it turns out that they departed significantly then i might give the original movie another try. it took me 3 rentals to finally complete the original King Kong so maybe i need to do the same for the original TDTESS....but again, i'm an effects guy so please understand if it's hard for me to watch movies with out of date special effects.

btw, my apologies for offending anyone's love for the original with my "too damn old" comments.

Ive deleted the excess bickering, all this b/c Dorky has an opinion ? I'm kinda surprised at a couple of you jumping all on him like you did, granted he didn't put his initial point as clearly as he could but what you guys did is not conducive to debate.

If I gather right Dorky is talking about how he finds it hard to watch really old Sci/fi and Fantasy movies b/c the effects are so hokey right ?

i wouldnt say "hokey" but yes, that's about right. i'm a very visual person and the old effects are an eye soar to me and it prevents me from taking the movies seriously.

Well, I made that commentary about Four Christmases. I never watched King of Kong, whatever about the director, but FC is bad! Simple as that. And to think Australia, a much better movie loses audience for trash like that, is sad!

I read a bit about the talk over the original and I say: I watched the original and for me it isn't so good as some make it to be. It has so many flaws and it's damn dated. I have no problems with a re-imagination of that story as long they make a more engaging movie than the original was. If it was released today, in the same molds, it would bomb. (I hope I don't get flamed to hell because I don't think the original is some type of holy thing...:o).

As for the marketing, the truth is: if you don't show the "action" in a movie like that, people don't give it a chance. Most movie goers want to see the show and will endure a long story if the show is good enough. War of the Worlds had incredible pieces of action but was a more personal movie for the most part. The weakness of it is that those personal parts were not good enough. I hope that TDTESS manages to engage the audience in those personal parts because with sure the action will be top notch. Take a look at Watchmen marketing. Do you all think Watchmen is ALL what is being showed in those previews? Of course not. It is a talky, cerebral story, but put that on a trailer and see your opening weekend says bye bye!

every sci-fi "invasion" movie is marketed as "we fight back." Even before 9/11 happened, that's how it was. Look at Transformers from last year...that whole concept is supposed to be how we are caught in their war, yet a lot of ads showcased it as us "fighting back," as if all the robots were evil and we were the good guys.

The fighting back is fair because obviously humans will fight back whatever invasor that lands here. And that's what happens in TDTESS.
