Big Willie's son honestly is in the business because his dad is a player in the industry, that's why. I'm willing to wait and see if he can garner some talent from all the plum roles he's getting, so I won't say he's just a precocious kid actor yet. I do know many a kid that acts like he does in the film though..a total a-hole, even if you can't call kids that. :o

Great movie. Didn't take long at all to get going as things began pretty much towards the start. Always a plus in my book.

Even with lot's of dialogue throughout (which I found interesting, never lost my attention), they would often go back to some big special effects with 'Gort' or just with Klatuu (Keanu). It kept the action moving along in the midst of the great and interesting developing story.

Speaking of Gort, I like his big size even though in the original he was smaller. It was really neat after Keanu gets shot that we first see Gort go into action and beat the military swiftly (hope I'm not giving away too much here, though, this follows the original movie pretty much).

I also like it that we see Gort used more in combat in this movie than in the original and that he had more powers which you would expect with an advanced civilization.

I like the idea of the black mist that begins to take over the world.

Although alot of similarities to the original (often in a kinda fresh way, though, such as when we first see Gort as mentioned above), there were alot of different things from the original too which really kept my interest.

I also like Keanu, he played the part of the alien Klatuu possibly perfectly as did Jennifer Connely who played her role really great.

I'm ranking this as high as my favorite movies of all-time which also includes 2 other alien invasion movies, 'Independence Day' and 'War Of The Worlds (the remake from a couple of years ago).' I would also say I like this alot more than the original and I do really like the original, it's just that the special effects of modern day and the action (which there is more of) made this 2008 remake better. Plus I really like the actors/actresses such as Keanu and Jennifer.

If you like big special effects/disaster/alien invasion movies, this is one to see. I think you will really like it.

It's your opinion, dude. But really? You think special effects and making it modern and more action makes it a better film? Pfft.

Well, my favorite movies are actually special effects movies and so yeah, I will usually choose a current year over yesteryear in the special effects. Just as I did with War Of The Worlds. I like the remake more.

I also found there to be more action in this movie than the original which helped me like this movie more which is due to my liking action and in an alien invasion movie, action is something I want, especially in this type of alien invasion movie (one that has 'disaster movie' pretty much written in it because of the robot type thing, Gort, threatening to destroy the world, I want to see as much of this as possible).

Plus I can relate to a modern theme more since we're in modern times.

Considering the special FX in this movie were disappointing and Gort looks TERRIBLE, I wish people would stop slagging the original saying it looks unwatchable because it's black/white and has old school FX.

How does Gort look terrible? He looks like a giant, liquid-metal robot. I didn't think the effects were disappointing at all. I thought Gort looked a bit liquid until I realized why he looked that way.

Also, the environmental message is bullcrap.

Jennifer Connelly's intro has her talking about bacteria surviving in sulfuric acid and toxic waste. Worst comes to worst and we nuke ourselves into oblivion, these microbes will reboot life on Earth.

Anybody read Jurassic Park? There's a scene where Hammond starts worrying about the planet being in trouble and Ian Malcolm tells him it's not. WE'RE the one's in trouble, making it unlivable for ourselves. "Life Finds A Way."

The Earth's had about 5 mass extinctions in it's history and it'll have plenty more whether we're here or not.

i haven't seen the movie but i think it would've been smart to incorporate mankind's venture into space...that way our bad ways wouldn't just be a threat to ourselves but a threat to civilizations on other planets as well.

Considering the special FX in this movie were disappointing and Gort looks TERRIBLE, I wish people would stop slagging the original saying it looks unwatchable because it's black/white and has old school FX.
first off, i never said that i couldnt watch it cuz it's colorless. second, if you're gonna call someone out then call me out like a man. third, if people saw these effects back in the 50's then they would have thought that everything on the screen was real. fourth, i'll say whatever i want to say...ESPECIALLY if it's my opinion.

Who else caught the wilhelm scream during the Gort breakout?

7/10. Great concept in the remake department, but lacking in the character department.

Not his fault that talent skips a generation but hey,, I'm sure Will's grandkids will be sharp as tacks. lol In Jaden's defense, he was playing a brat nobody could have made likable.

I loved the movie, right up until it ended. I didn't even realize it was over until there were end credits. It really needed to be about 10-20 minutes longer. That was my only gripe, but it's a big one. I thought the acting was great, save for Mini Smith. He was okay at best. He didn't really take away from the movie, but he didn't seem to add as much as his castmates.

HOw did it do at the boxoffice over the weekend?

I watched the original first last week and the new one today, and to be honest i liked the 1951 version much more than the 2008 one... It had a much better moral to the story in 1951 than the 2008 version, and it also explained what Gort was all about in better detail.

Still the 2008 version killed a few hours i guess....

5/10

Mediocre at best, but made me want to see the original even more than I previously did (which it is pretty high on my list).

Saw this movie yesterday and man was it bad. Doesn't even compare to the original.

I felt like the acting here was so wooden and Smith's kid was annoying and obnoxious as hell! In the 1951 version the characters were all charming and well developed. I like Keanu usually but this was one of his career low points. Even Bates was horrible and she is always fantastic.

Even if you don't compare it to the original, and judge its own it merits, it is still a stupid movie. I mean there was no reason for Connelly's character to go so out of the way and risk so much to help Klattu in the beginning. Yeah maybe when she found out what Klattu was going to do the people of Earth it made sense to help him, but not before that.

And the Robot wasn't even acting on Klattu's orders and he really had no contol over it in this one.

And the ending was so dumb. I mean at least in the original Klattu gets to speak to those he intended to speak with. I know b/c times changed the message had to change but it wasn't presented well in this one and the ending fell flat.

The only positive I can really give this movie is the special effects were improved, but its 2008 so thats not saying anything really.

The Day the Earth Stood Still

I only watched the first hour of the original The Day the Earth Stood Still
This updated version basically follows the same storyline, with the exception that this time humans will be wiped from the face of the earth for destroying the environment ,instead of the creation of atomic bombs.Keanu Reeves is spot on as the alien Klaatu.I enjoyed the action scenes which featured Klaatu's robot protector G.O.R.T, the metallic locusts quite creative.
The rest of TDTEST is quite boring.I didnt feel anything for the characters.
Jennifer Connelly was basically Betty Ross again,Jaden Smith so likeable in The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) comes off as a spoiled ,obnoxious, brat here.
Jon Cleese shows up for a few minutes to write on a black board and beg for mercy for human kind. Its funny how an A.P.B can be issued for someone and he can stand around a train station filled with troops and security and no one notices, but he enters a Mcdonald's and the whole world knows where he is.
Scale of 1-10 a 5

I just checked out the film last night, first off I am a big fan of the original so I was pretty concerned on how this film would turn out. I would have to say I was quite pleased with the film, it was adapted to modern times very well. Hunter got it right on how they adapted it, I would give the writers credit the film was not preachy, it just made a few points about humanity.

I don't want to say too much more and give anything away, it was worth the 8 bucks.

Just saw it, it was pretty good. Not insanely far from the original. Will Smith's son annoyed the **** out of me.

Saw it today. It was pretty 'meh'. Good special effects for the most part, but I couldn't stand the kid. I kept wishing a tree would fall on him or something.

Not his fault that talent skips a generation but hey,, I'm sure Will's grandkids will be sharp as tacks. lol In Jaden's defense, he was playing a brat nobody could have made likable.

I really don't think it has much to do with his acting, he was playing a character that was written to be annoying and not very like able. I think the fault more lays with the writers than Will's son, the Persuit of Hapyness, he did a good job, considering that he only has two movies under his belt he is not off to a bad start acting-wise.
