DC Animated - Superman/Batman: Apocalypse

Those caps look awesome, i havent been this excited in a while for a DTV.

Just a little under than 2 weeks until this is out. I can't wait!

I would take that down or you are asking for a Perma-Ban.

Just watched it.
It largely sticks to the core story elements of the comic book just like Public Enemies, but I liked this better than Public Enemies.

The final battle between [BLACKOUT]Supergirl and Darkseid[/BLACKOUT] is pretty cool, and [BLACKOUT]she gives him[/BLACKOUT] a respectable fight [BLACKOUT]for a few minutes[/BLACKOUT]. Then you forget all about that when [BLACKOUT]Superman returns from orbit and speed-blitzes Darkseid[/BLACKOUT] like nobody's business!

I actually felt like shouting [BLACKOUT]"yeah Superman!"[/BLACKOUT]

Cool scene!

Over all I liked it. Sometimes the animation bugged me (with the guys faces).
I really liked the fighting style they gave SuperGirl, quick, with using kicks and and various throws/takedowns, not brute force like Superman. The voice work was well done.

Loved the final battle.

How about Batman's role and fighting style? And does his confrontation w/ Darkseid's as BADASS as from the comic?? That's the scene i'm most excited to see from the comic translated in this animated adaptation! :awesome: :hrt:

it was almost panel for panel. i enjoyed it. i wonder why public enemies took more liberties, this was good. just missing the word bubbles and internal monologues other than that it was just about the same as the comic. i love 2d animation, keep them coming.

:awesome: :woot: :atp:

Good to hear, I dont know why they dont do the Inner Monologues, those are just so important to the story.

yea you really miss out how much superman and batman respect each other in public enemies and also in this movie. i think the silver surfer cartoon was the only one to use the internal monologues that i remember. i really liked the vo of the surfer and the way he spoke.

Well they have done it in Live action and it actually seems more appropriate here in Animation, Spiderman: TAS didnt shy from it.

Never been a fan of internal monologues outside of comics. That's something that comics are very effective at doing, but in other mediums it usually comes across as ham-fisted.

I actually think Sin City did it pretty well and if you just keep the Inner Monologue as a narration tool it works well.

I'm gonna try to control myself and not watch it and wait until it's out in 2 weeks.

A question for those who've seen it.

Is Supergirl alive at the end like she was in the book? I didn't like that reveal when I read the book, as I thought it would've been more powerful if Darkseid actually killed her.

Negative review:

So I happened to see the movie and I just had to post this.

For the love of all that is good and true in the world, do not see this movie.

That out of the way, let me preface what I'm about to say with some information. I originally read The Supergirl from Krypton storyline this movie is based one back when it came out. Issue by issue. Delay by massive delay. Despite that and my future disdain for the writings of one Jeph Loeb, I enjoyed the story.

Superman/Batman: Apocalypse is not this story. It is a travesty that no one should be forced to suffer through ever.

Where to start? The horrible character designs. I don't know who did them, but clearly their intent was to harm the eyeballs of anyone watching. From Superman's ridiculous eyebrows desparately crying out for kryptonite tweezers to a slimmer and somewhat trimmer, Barbera Bush-esque Granny Goodness, the design team had zero idea what they were doing. Big Barda isn't "big," but a costume and hair change of Wonder Woman. Harbinger and Supergirl are difficult to distinguish apart (this was a problem in the comic, but extremely moreso here). Darkseid's embarrassingly cylindrical head shape. The upper lips of Batman and Superman. The entire movie whenever the focus was on them, it's all I could see (whenever I didn't see Clark's eyebrows).

Next up, the story. In a mere 24 minute window, the episode "Little Girl Lost" made Kara Zor-El/Supergirl a more endearing character than however long this movie was (for those of us who have complained about movies being too short, this one will make you beg that it was). She goes from scared (and naked), alien crash landing on Earth (with no clothes and a flashback backing this up. What the heck was up with her dad?) to suddenly having a full powerset (despite having just landed in the dark of night to being a vapid, whiny teenager in the span of 20 minutes or so. This doesn't take into account the first ridiculous "kidnapping" of her nor the second one (for being pretty damn powerful, she sure gets captured easily). Without going into painful detail, the "ending" you'll be grateful for isn't and you're forced through another 20 minutes of crap at the end of the movie and it is not pleasant at all.

Basically the only thing semi-enjoyable in the movie is when Barbera Bush and the Young Republicans Ladies Club....I mean Granny Goodness and the Female Furies throw down with the good guys. It is maybe a cubic zirconium in the giant pile of crud this movie is, but by no means is any excuse to ever watch or buy it.

Writer Tab Murphy was tasked with making this movie and clearly was not up to the task. The next time I view My Best Friend is a Vampire, I'll have to wonder what sort of downward spiral he took that his skills dropped to that of a hack screenwriter taking up space in a Starbucks (yes, I stole that from Family guy, you gonna do something about it?).

I would rather read the disgustingly embarrassing Ultimates 3, also written by Jeph Loeb over watching this again. I would sit through 10 minutes of the musical horror that is Justin Beiber over this. I would rather be the doctor who got the short straw and had to give Lady Gaga her annual physical over ever seeing this again. This movie is so down on the crap scale that I can't even think of anything close to it (not even you, horrible Balto sequels). This movie is a new level of awfulness like none ever seen before and if you happen to make it through it without cuts where you clenched your fists so hard against your palm that you started to bleed, you deserve a medal.

I never expected an apology from Bruce Timm for any of the DCAU work (not even Brainiac Attacks), but this movie would make me want him to at least say "our bad" if nothing else.

Good luck and godspeed to you out there. Make the right choice (or don't). It's up to you.

Anyone, who already seen it, agree w/ this review??

I liked the movie. Green lantern FL is still my favorite then batman utrh batman beyond rotj

I just read the review you posted man all I can say is the movie was almost panel for panel. Some changes but not like PE was changed. He said he read the comic it was based on but not recently. I just read the comic like a week ago and this was almost the same. I won't go into details. I would hate to spoil anything for anyone. Even if I blacken it out or put spoiler. It's best if I just wait till it's released.

I hate it when idiots tell the rest of us to not see a movie just because they, personally, don't like it.

That's why I never pay attention to a reviewer of games movies etc. I just look on YouTube for gameplay vids or trailers for movies. Then I try it out if I'm interested. I have said many times movies are subjective you like this one or that one. Not every one has the same taste and that is fine. variety is the spice of life. the spice must flow, lol sorry had to throw in dune reference.

Its good. It has pacing issues and needs a better score. The ending is completely rejigged for the better with shades of the conclusion of Great Darkness [blackout](interestingly Darkseid says 'I'll see you again kryptonian' to Supergirl that isn't in the comic) [/blackout]. The gold is in the little character moments.

There is only one massive issue in the story
They decided to have Superman punch supergirl out with his own strength rather than with the Kryptonite aid he used in the comics. Its character destroying that he would choose to beat her until she passes out (off screen) rather than use an aid that could end it quickly. Reeked of unnecessary masculine pride that he MUST be so completely stronger.

Even then though this isn't Superman/Batman really. Its a team movie. Barda even gets a new logo in the credits. In that way it was everything I wanted in the adaptation.

As for the review, the similarity between Kara and Lyla is a plot point. He's right they probably should have mentioned to sun lamps in the ship to explain her nakedness. I didn't think the character was vapid or whiny. What did she whine about? I guess because she liked shopping and doing things she thought 'earth girls' do made her mindless? Sign me up for the Stepford Wives then because I LOVE shopping. We are meant to think she's weak because she got captured by A) Wonder Woman and B) Darkseid? If only we were all so weak.

Just saw this movie and I gotta say... that review seems intent on provoking a reaction. :whatever:

This movie was fantastic from top to bottom... and I feel most of the credit has to go to it's producer/director Lauren Montgomery. I'm sure she brought the soft, emotional and feminine touch that this movie needed...

The Story: Minus the inner monologues, a revamped ending and extraction of some silly comic book story-telling escapes... this is pretty much Jeph Loeb's tale panel for panel.

I do believe the movie is MUCH better than the graphic novel and layered with beautiful character moments. The small touches make a difference.

The Animation: I believe MOI animation did this movie and they truly did a phenomenal job... The background, the fight scenes :wow: the beautiful atmosphere that they were able to achive was astonishing.

Yes the character designs don't always work, with sadly Bats and Supes fairing the worse with those LIPS. However it's a minor nitpick and they did Michael Turner proud.

The Voice Cast: Kevin Conroy, Tim Daly, Susan Eisneberg and Ed Asner... Need I say more?? (Susan has gotten a much stronger control over her voice these days it seems, and Daly also seems to be settling back into it). Kevin just NAILED it as always :woot:

LOVED Summer Glau as Kara/Supergirl. She brought so much nuance to her performance.

Sadly, Andre Braugher fell flat as Darkseid... he was never menacing or commanding enough. The only flaw in an otherwise GREAT cast by Andrea Romano.

Other Notes: A movie with great atmosphere, effective if lacking score and wonderful emotion... The running time felt fine to me. So apart from some design flaws, Andre Braugher and a number of nitpicks... I would give Superman/Batman: Apocalypse a 7/10

Once again, my biggest praise is for... Lauren Montgomery!!

superman and wonder woman were the stars of this movie. i dont think superman has ever been shown to go ape like he does in this in televison/movies.
especially cool when he's superspeed punching darkseid while burning him with heatvision
he also doesn't have any wimp moments like he did in TAS or Justice League
other than maybe getting taken out too fast by Darkseid at the end and having Supergirl last longer, but one awesome part was when these kamikaze demons fly into him blowing up as he's walking into the palace, and after the explosion he just comes walking out like nothing happend.

this was also the best wonderwoman has ever looked. way better than anything before. her fighting was also amazing, she definitely seemed to be the most powerful woman.

Batman did kind of bother me though, i dont really like this version
where if you didnt know any better you would swear he has superpowers as he can get thrown threw stone pillars and walls and survive. there was probably around 5 times where batman should have been dead. i prefer to keep him as powerful as a human should be. even the batarangs that are somehow as powerful as a punch from supes bother me though

anyway if you like superman and wonderwoman and batgod batman watch this

(and has anyone figured out why they didn't/couldnt get michael ironside back? it was annoying just because its one of those "what could have been" things)

thanks guys! can't wait to watch it myself! LOVED the comic and i'm sure id LOVE the adaptation as well! ^_^
