Freddy is taking the trials to become "Shazam." But Shazam is not the wizard; Shazam used to be the name of the wizard, but now it's the name of the champion, the one who's going to have the wisdom of Solomon, strength of Hercules, yada yada yada.

Billy, right now, is in the role of the wizard. But he's called Marvel. Not Captain Marvel, not Wizard Marvel, just Marvel.

Winick basically switched the names on us, god knows why. Incidentally, that means that there's now no more hero called "Captain Marvel"; Winick effectively killed him.

I think they're gonna call Freddy Shazam because they don't want to put out a book called Shazam but have it be about a hero called Captain Marvel. Guess they're finally giving the name up to Marvel comics.

It's sad to see such a thing happen, but DC already got rid of Superboy. Which I can't believe they're still not admitting they had to give up.

I doubt it was anything editorial at DC forcing the Shazam name change. Suggesting, maybe. But when has the name thing really ever hurt the character? The last Power of Shazam! series ran for almost fifty issues, which is pretty decent.

Just as I doubt that the Siegel lawsuit was the thing that killed off Conner Kent. The lawsuit was over the Silver Age Superboy that Siegel created, not the one who appeared in the nineties. And his death was set up way too far ahead in advance and worked too well within the story for it to have been lawsuit-influenced. And Conner has "appeared" post Infinite Crisis, anyway...if a lawsuit really did say that Conner had to go, they wouldn't have been able to use him at all in any way.

Even if they did, it's not clear confirmation...a lot of things in Titans Tomorrow aren't valid anymore, and especially not since Infinite Crisis. The future in the DCU is definitely fluid, not static.
