This is valid for some American actors too. As soon as they come of age and are mild-mannered personalities and/or have some dramatic weight (but aren't full fledged villain types or crazy comedians), they will suit Alfred.
Stanton is just one example

BATMAN KNIGHTFALL (1998)
Director: Tim Burton
Producers: Jon Peters, Peter MacGregor Scott
Script: Sam Hamm, Paul Dini
Music : Danny Elfman
Development History: In the aftermath of the release of Batman Forever, Val Kilmer decides to leave the franchise after "creative differences". Joel Schumacer , after producing one hit Batman film, decides to move on to other projects instead of going forward with the inevitable Batman 4. Since WB won't begin filming the next Batman film until 1997 at the earliest, the studio takes it's time to woo the men who started the franchise, Tim Burton and Michael Keaton . Burton returns on the condition he can tell a darker Batman story he wants to tell.
The story Burton and Keaton are drawn to is the recent Knightfall story arch with Bane as its central villain. However, Burton plans to truncate the story , excising the Azreal storyline and the battle for the cowl , and instead showing Wayne's recovering from his broken back and defeating Bane. Warner Brothers insists on Sam Hamm and Batman The Animated Series writer Paul Dini to take over the scripting duties and Burton concedes once he is assured that all three men have the same vision for the next Batman film. The plan is to return to the darker elements of Batman 1989 while maintaining the level of action of Batman Forever, and further emphasizing Bruce Wayne is the central focus of the film as opposed to his villains.
The studio insists on Chris O'Donnell as Robin returning, but Burton decides to turn Grayson into Nightwing, thinking that the Nightwing character fits into his vision of Batman more than a teen Robin does. Keaton and O'Donnell hit it off well and serve as an interesting contrast as Batman and Nightwing. Michelle Pfeiffer is tapped to reprise her role as Catwoman from Batman Returns , picking up that romantic storyline which was abandoned with Batman Forever. Gough and Hingle once again reprise their roles as Alfred and Gordon. Coming off of the popularity of Die Hard 3 and Pulp Fiction, Samuel L Jackson is cast as Lucius Fox, Bruce Wayne's silent partner of sorts.
For the villainous Bane, Burton goes with Karate Kid and veteran tv actor Martin Cove. Burton decides to fill out the rest of the escapees from Arkham with brief celebrity cameo appearances with Patrick Stewart as Mr. Freeze, Cameron Diaz as Harley Quinn, Beetlejuice actress Geena Davis, and Johnny Deep as Scarecrow. This is to plant the seeds for potential Batman sequels in the next decade. The film is released in June of 1998 and is another smash hit in the Batman franchise, doubling the profit of Batman Forever. Plans are soon put in motion for an untitled Batman 5.
