They really need to finish collecting Veitch's run. What with Vertigo reprinting "Lost Tales", it would be great if they reprinted all of Veitch's time travel run, complete with his "Jesus" issue, and then as a bonus, the published version written by the other guy.

What I don't understand is, a few short years later, they let Garth Ennis gleefully stomp all over the story of Jesus in both Hellblazer and Preacher, but his appearance in Swamp Thing - which, based on what I've read about it, was very reverent and respectful - was deemed too controversial and edited out.

When the issue was set to be published, BATMAN was set to come out soon. And considering the attention they were getting, and the attention and controversy that The Last Temptation of Christ had received, DC didn't wanna run risk of mucking up BATMAN.

That's what I read anyway. I've also read that there was issue taken with Jesus being referred to as a magician by the Romans.

Regardless, DC blew it big time. Gaiman and Delano, man! Gaiman and Delano!

There was a Rick Veitch-penned issue of Swamp Thing, the conclusion to his epic time travel arc, in which Swamp Thing goes back to the time of Jesus and encounters Christ himself. DC panicked, asked Veitch to change stuff around (for really, no reason) otherwise they wouldn't publish it. He refused and he quit DC. DC subsequently brought in another writer to do their changes and it was apparently really half-assed.

I hear Rich Veitch's run was good, and a respectable follow-up to Moore, but after Veitch left the series just went on a downward spiral of aborted "new directions" leading to the volume's eventual cancellation.

My only exposure to Swamp Thing before Brightest Day was the Vertigo series from a few years ago, but that seemed to focus on Tefe more than anyone else. I had no idea who Tefe was and Swamp Thing was a godlike, dehumanized jerk, so I lost interest pretty quickly.

Animal Man and Swamp Thing are going to be crossing over pretty soon. Deadworld will be a year long crossover between the two titles.

A year-long crossover? Geez. I mean, it was pretty obvious given that the Other was quickly introduced as the first big bad for both series, but I'm a little wary of a crossover going on for that long. We'll see, though. I'm reading both series anyway, so it's not like it affects my buying habits one way or the other.

Couldn't agree more. Just got done reading Animal Man #2 and I think I may enjoy it more than Swamp Thing. I'm just too engrossed in Buddy's family life, I think. But I look forward to reading your reviews. They're good stuff.

I'm kind of surprised to see Justice League Dark do so well, considering that the line-up isn't exactly filled with A-listers.

JLD probably got a decent bump from the JL name. Pretty interesting to note that there's a pretty big gap in between Swamp Thing and the other Dark titles.

Did anyone really expect these to be big sellers? Being in the top 50 is pretty good for the ones that are, and Animal Man's not too far out from that. I think these series have a much better chance of holding steady at these levels, too. A good 75% (at least) of the New 52 that broke into the upper echelons of the sales charts are going to drop like stones over the next month or two.

Yeah, I'm not too worried about these books either. Animal Man #2 is likely going to get a bump from issue #1 due to how well it was received and how quickly it sold out. And if quality maintains, it'll probably end up being a very stable seller for DC.

Demon Knights, I, Vampire, and Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E. were also liked by those who read them and will probably at least stay steady for a little bit.
