Deadpool Deadpool News and Discussion - Part 3

Congratulations Deadpool fans!

Now here's hoping for a sequel!

Joe Kelly's run was definitely R Rated i'd say. If only for the abuse Blind Al gets. You couldn't do a story about a psychotic mercenary torturing a blind old lady by locking her in a box full of sharp objects in a PG-13 film. Simple as. This isn't even talking about how Typhoid Mary raped him and countless other things.

The whole concept of Deadpool is R Rated.

Here's a quote from that review.

As is often the case with such violence, it eventually becomes numbing. By its midpoint, once the novelty of a superhero movie showing super levels of violence wears off, the thinness and lack of spark in the fight scenes becomes more readily apparent. By the film's end, they are hard to distinguish from any other superhero fare. Similarly, lack of imagination keep the film's prodigious swearing and occasional nudity from feeling like anything original. They appear to be shoe-horned into the film simply because they could be, not because they serve an essential purpose. And here we thought "Deadpool" would do something different.

Yeah, just like I figured. And this is one (but not the only) of the reasons why I think that this movie should have been rated PG-13. I think (and I could be wrong) that if the DP movie is a hit (which I think it will be), an R rated sequel will not do as well since the novelty of the R rated content would have worn off after the first movie. It would be like Daffy Duck's greatest act in that old Bugs Bunny cartoon.

I think you are mis-remembering a lot of Blade and Blade 2.

No, I'm not. I've seen those 2 movies multiple times and most of the more bloody and gory scenes in those movies could have either been toned down to be made less gory and bloody without screwing up the film.

If they were toned down they wouldn't be the same movies anymore. You can't just screw around with intensity like that.

And we get, you don't like that this is PG-13. WE. GOT. IT. PAL.

Really happy to see this getting good reviews, it seems at the very least a solid CBM which is a good start to a possible franchise.

But for what I have seen and heard personally I think I will love it.

Glad to see this is getting good reviews. Now let's hope it's a hit at the box office.

Ryan Reynolds deserves a hit. Long over due.

Surprisingly and after all the complaints....Faraci gave this a fresh review.

Fresh only requires 3/5, which means the positives outweigh the negatives. I'm glad it's currently at 100%. I expected this film to get a lot of 4/5s and 2/5s because it seems like something that would be polarizing.

My opinion in this case happens to be fact. Up until the Quesada/Jemas editorial regime, Deadpool comics were CCA approved all ages comics. If you know anything about Marvel in the before the Quesada/Jemas regime took over, you would know that they were very strict on the content in their comics (even more strict then the CCA). So they took great strides to depict gruesome violent action scenes in less gory and graphic manner WITHOUT sugarcoating or lessening the point of the story.

Deadpool was always profane, though. Unless the movie wants to bleep the curses like the comics did, that would always be a problem. I would also argue that Marvel CCA-approved comics showed way more blood than PG-13 allows. X-Men comics in the 80s, in particular, were very bloody at times. It wasn't violence for the sake of violence, but that's an area they'd have to tone down for a PG-13 movie.

To be fair, several of these positive reviews are more of a barely passable than a best movie ever. Metacritic isn't being quite as kind (65 last I checked).

Definitely sounds like a solid movie, though.

Keep in mind what RT measures. 100% doesn't mean the greatest movie ever. It means a universally loved movie. The higher the score, the greater the chance you'll at least enjoy the movie (rate it a three out of five or better). It's not saying the higher the score the better you'll like the movie.

RT is just the percentage of people who thought it was okay (3/5 or better). The average rating gives a better indication of the movie's quality, which is sitting at 7.8/10 right now.

Looks promising. Seems to be just in the style and tone that I've hoped for.

I don't think the rating is very useful since reviewers use different scales, and even those using the same scale define it differently. I'd also not use the word "quality" in that sense as it seems to have a too objective meaning.

I think the fresh-rotten thing is the best when using averages, since then it just simply shows to what grade it appealed to critics. For more detail averages suck and I think it's better to then look at individual opinions instead, where you can get a grasp of the context.

Ahhhh, a guy who actually understands RT. A diamond in the rough.

Man I cannot wait to see this. Sounds like it's gonna be a great theater experience with the right crowd.

I got nothing in this debate, but just reading the comments it really looks like you're going to cherrypick reviews to justify your opinion.

My opinion? We have more than enough PG13 superhero movies to choose from. This one wants to let loose and be R? Let it be.

Agreed. If this does well, I will be very happy for him. I have not seen as much passion shown for a comic book character from an actor, than I have from Ryan Reynolds towards Deadpool. He really has put a lot into this, into the actual movie, promoting it, and getting it made in the first place.
