Deadpool Deadpool News and Discussion - Part 3

Yeah, I was surprised when I saw Deadpool merch alongside Jessica Jones, Daredevil & Punisher. I mean, yeah, there were obviouslly promoting the Netflix show with them, but Deadpool in there? Yeah, they choose to promote Deadpool rather than Wolverine & the X-Men.

Throwing another tidbit in with this "helicarrier" stuff: Ed Skrein confirmed last month that he has an action scene on a wrecked aircraft. This crashing helicarrier-like object probably does fly, as that matches up. Odd...

A flying vessel. It was not on the sea. Again, Skrein confirmed he had a fight scene in an aircraft, and the fight in the spot looked like it was in this carrier. It's almost certainly not a standard naval vessel.

Between this and Fox establishing a multiverse (Legion isn't in the X-Men film universe) things are getting a little weird.

LOL. :funny:

Miller already mentioned this supposed "helicarrier" during last year's set visit interviews...

http://screenrant.com/deadpool-director-tim-miller-interview-set-visit/

We were talking to the visual effects supervisor. What caught my interest here is obviously the helicarrier.

Tim Miller: It’s not a helicarrier.

Aircraft carrier with propellers….

Tim Miller: It’s clearly not a helicarrier…

[Laughs]

… Because that would violate the Marvel S.H.I.E.L.D. universe sort of thing.

That’s what I was going to ask. How was it decided?

Tim Miller: It’s not a helicarrier.

[Laughs] … That this vehicle would be in this film as a set piece?

Tim Miller: That would be me. But I think when you see the design for it, it’s not going to. And to be fair, there are Helicarrier-like vehicles in the X-Men universe. It’s not just S.H.I.E.L.D. that has them. So I think it’s fair game.

Look, Deadpool is all about… there’s the larger shiny Marvel universe where everybody has new gear and it’s all made of chrome and leather. And then there’s Deadpool. I think the world that he explores is a much seedier, everyday sort of ordinary type world. But he still lives in that universe. It still has to sit next to all these other films.

So I think the more we can bring that world into his world the better. But it has to be done in such a way that it feels Deadpool. So, what better way to do it than a decrepit carrier that’s being stripped for scrap? And it’s dirty, and grungy, and nasty. When you see the shots that are up on the flight deck of that ship, it’s obviously not up to S.H.I.E.L.D. spec in its design. It looks more like a World War 2 sort of technology with… some… turbo fans.

So it's a helicarrier that won't use that exact phrase. Got it. FWIW, the helicarrierwinkwinknudgenudge was not in the original script. That seems to replace a bit that was in a building. There was probably some sort of approval process here, as that's a major set piece to add.

If anything it seems like there was no approval process, since Miller is so adamant about it NOT being a helicarrier. :funny:

He's definitely trying to cover himself, from a legal standpoint...

Also, this interview with Miller took place last spring (during filming) months before Fantastic Four was released.

By approval process I was more referring to Fox higher ups approving it, since it definitely wasn't in the script. Fox's legal team generally approves of all the various questionable elements (Marvel has to do the same, Gunn recently confirmed he tried to use Doop and couldn't).

Another odd thing, I saw a Deadpool printed advertisement advertisement that promoted both the film and the merchandise (specifically clothes). That stuff is controlled by Marvel. This is getting a level of cross promotion Fox Marvel adaptations haven't received in years.

Not a Helicarrier.

The VFX of this film is not bad considering its budget.

Really it's like marvel can use inhumans even though they are like mutants but as long as they don't call them mutants marvel is ok and I suppose the director is doing similar with deadpool without needing any form of permission as long as it's different enough

Inhumans is a little different. That's a separate IP that has had it's film rights separate for years (if said rights weren't specific they'd probably have been bundled with Fantastic Four, actually). Though I suppose Fox can't complain about Multiple Woman, Asian Magneto, and Totally Not Raina From X-Men Comics over on AoS. :p

It was obviously never a helicarrier. Lol.
I've seen a lot of Deadpool merchandise at the Hastings near my house. Marvel will be making all the money from that, won't they?

... except even the director interview says it kinda is. He keeps saying "It's not a helicarrier!", but goes on to acknowledge that it's essentially the same thing as one.

And yes, Marvel is the one putting out the merchandise. This is the first time they've so prominently featured an X-Men character in merchandise in years. The latest Deadpool Funko I saw even has a Deadpool logo instead of the usual Marvel only logos they usually feature on Pops that aren't connected to a film franchise they control.

New spot. Ajax clearly fights Deadpool on the Hell,it'sacarrier. That's the fight scene Skrein said was on an aircraft. Not just a naval aircraft carrier. It definitely goes airborne.

The Deadpool Hot Toys collectible is a film tie in with both the FOX and Marvel logos. The Mouse is going to have to cut a check for that one. The Hot Topic line is FOX free, so Disney Consumer Products pockets the entire nut.

For all those decrying Disney/Marvel's treatment of X-Men merchandise, this proves its all about the money. Deadlock moves product, so he gets special treatment.

Wolverine moves product, and he's getting screwed on the merchandise front compared to Deadpool. Deadpool's definitely getting special treatment, we just don't know why.

Yeah, as I said, I was surprised seeing Deadpool merch announced alongside Punisher, Daredevil & Jessica Jones.

Marvel is also throwing special Deadpool logos on some of the new stuff. Here's a new Pop:

That Deadpool logo is unusual. Usually they do a Marvel Universe logo on Pops that aren't specifically film tie-in material, including lots of other Deadpool Pops.

I honestly saw the TV spot and thought air craft carrier upon first seeing it. Maybe I'm a little behind the ball on this but I didn't even make the connection until I came here.

Interesting. I'm guessing Marvel has a different merchandising contract with Fox that allows them to keep more scratch from Deadpool merch than with the X-men.
Those greedy corporate overlords! How dare they want to maximize profits off of their own characters! :o

So, pretty much how they are fitting Bob into the film.

Aircraft carriers don't actually fly. This one does, so it's totally a (knock off) "Helicarrier". I hereby dub it the Hell,it'sacarrier™. Fox can send me my check for giving them that totally original name for their totally original creation.

I'm pretty sure it's the same deal - Disney Consumer Products keeps the entire licensing fee for products based on comics but owes FOX a minority share of film tie ins.

This made me chuckle.

Interesting. So Disney can make X-men comic book t shirts and what have you?

They can, but lately they've been removing the X-Men from comic cover t-shirts that should have included them:

Co-writer Rhett Reese weighs in on the PG-13 petition:

Not to poop on the parade, but no amount of petitioning will result in a PG-13 Deadpool. For better or worse (better!), it is rated R.
