Deadpool & Wolverine Deadpool & Wolverine at the BoX office

It’s all just a joke for an R-rated film. Yet another film where I would have got any predictions totally wrong. As you said in a previous post, the WOM is looking a lot stronger than expected and a bunch of people who would have stayed on the bench and waited till streaming are now likely to eventually make an effort and go to see it.
It was always a tricky one to see how this film was going to land, for every plus I could see a minus as well.

It was a well established franchise already with two strong outings but I dont think the 2nd quite made what the first 1 did, had DP had its moment and was on the decline a bit. It was now part of the MCU but that was on the wane in terms of popularity since Endgame as well, with some major flops now under its name which wasnt happening before, getting Hugh on board was a massive plus but would being under Disney mean both characters would be a bit watered down and be as hard R as what the fans of the a last two films had come to be used too and like with these characters. In my eye's it was always walking a tight rope but somehow they do seemed to have walked that line along with adding some nice touches for saying good bye to the Fox-verse and at the same time teasing and using the new toys of the MCU at their disposal without it overshadowing the heart of what made DP great in the first place.

53% drop on the huge weekend it opened up with is incredible and shows WOM has been really strong compared to even other comic book movies that opened at similar sizes. For an R rated movie to even be in the conversation for highest grossing of the year is insane. Whatever happens from now on though it seems like its going to be holding a lot of records for R rated films for quite some time it seems. I hope Deadpools next suit is made out of all gold next time to show the rise and rise of his stardom. :hehe:
The domestic number is going to be amazing. Even half would have been good lol. Will be interesting to see how well it holds overseas too.

WOM is amazing and holding strong. This week basically confirmed the 1.2 billion plus estimate last week. I emphasize plus, because 1.2 b is the floor going forward.. From start to finish, we're looking at around a 3x multiplier from a 211m opening. August looks to have no big challengers, so plenty of runway ahead.

Yeah, after 2 I wouldn’t have been all that confident on 3, and my own enthusiasm for the character had dimmed a bit after loving the first film and rewatching it tons of times.

It feels like everything happened to come together on this one at the right time and give CBMs a much-needed boost. I love watching the numbers on box office successes so should be a few weeks of fun ahead.

A reminder that the X-Men movies never did gangbusters at the box office. I expect that to change with the MCU X-Men.

The first two movies relied very much on RR and the Deadpool character alone which meant it might have run out of steam with a third installment in the same vain as those, they felt like underdog films, grungy, made on more of a budget, and used that in the marketing.

This time they had the double edged bonus of the MCU, making things bigger and flashier in terms of a more comic book feel than the last two as well as adding the cheery on top in getting Jackman to come back to carry some of the load this time and had loads of material that hadnt been done before for the Wolverine character which people were itching to see but somehow never been done in 20+ years of him playing the character. May not have resulted in a perfect movie but it has resulted in a perfect result for getting people in the door it seems.

Now if one of Brave New World, Thunderbolts* and Fantastic 4 could open with those numbers in their First weekend next year, that would be really good news, as I'm skeptical they would even come close to 70 million for their opening weekend.

Also, the Marvels didn't even hit $90 million in its entire run (North America) last year. Crazy how MCU bounced back at the box office in less than a year, with Deadpool & Wolverine - featuring actors that came from Foxverse. I hope this helps MCU as a whole and Marvels flopping was just a 1 time thing.

I have a good feeling about F4, not so sure on Thunderbolts but hopefully it has some strong trailers that gets traction and people talking.

Feels like Feige might keep Deadpool around for taking the piss out of future MCU characters & events, including Kang/Doom/new F4 & X-Men etc. It's made too much money to be left as a close to the trilogy.

It's a good result for Marvel/Disney, and they are going to have a nice rebound year this year. But what will happen if Thunderbolts* and Captain America 4 don't perform as well? Consistency will be important.

The expenses of Captain America 4 also shot up because of all the reshoots. So even if it does well, will it make its budget back?

Thunderbolts... I don't see much buzz about this? Seems like Marvel looked at the Suicide Squad movies and went "we got one of those at home".

With Downey coming back to play Doom, Marvel has a nice carrot to dangle with Fantastic Four.

F4 just gives me classic Marvel vibes similar to Spider-Man and the X-Men. I just hope they would finally attract a massive audience, similar to how Guardians, Black Panther and Shang-Chi were breakout hits by their 1st film. The 2005 film still did well but it was nowhere close to what X2/X3 did at the box office.

See my problem, with Thunderbolts is the line up isn't even that well inspired from the comics.

It seemed like they just grouped a bunch of characters we already see in the MCU and decided to make a story out of it. At least the Eternals and Guardians, had the same line up as their comics counterpart.

If Thunderbolts* the movie is featuring Penance and Songbird to name a few, I would feel differently about it getting a movie.

I hate the lineup and not having any of the classic Thunderbolts. That said, this could work better in the movie's favor because they haven't really properly introduced the classic Thunderbolts lineup, other than Zemo really.

I still think going the Sentry route is a terrible idea. It sounds like they've basically turned this into Marvel Suicide Squad, which I don't like. I feel like Zemo should be a part of the team and they should be going the Citizen V route, with the team ultimately turning on and rejecting Zemo. I've never liked Sentry as a character, and I don't get how they make Sentry work in a movie.

Finally outgrossed those other films I listed. From now on, I'll just post box office rankings for MCU films, from time to time.

Will Elektra/Jennifer Garner have the world record in terms of difference in box office between two theatrical appearances as the same character played by the same actor?

I can immediately think of one that I'm sure is higher. Brie Larson as Captain Marvel.

The Marvels: 84.5 domestic / 199.7 worldwide
Avengers Endgame: 858.3 domestic / 2.7 BILLION wordlwide

I'll be honest, even I didn't expect it to be this big. It will be interesting to see come February if it succeeds in restoring confidence in the Marvel brand across the board.
