Detective Pikachu

This was decent for the first half but I didn't care for the end twist personally but man seeing this world I grew up with realized in live-action was quite a treat. Objectively I can't exactly say its a good movie on its own(it will only work if you have any affinity for Pokemon) but I kind of was in Poke-heaven with a lot of the film.

7/10

Just saw it and liked it. The script could’ve been better and the way the two main human actors approached the material was distracting at times.

I liked it, didn't love it. I can see why non-fans may not care for it as the plot leaves a bit to be desired. Not that it's bad, the two protagonists are good and it has some nice emotional beats. Just finally seeing Pokemon come to life and the amount of fan service and easter eggs were enough to keep me pretty satisfied.

As I expected going in, it left me wishing they had just adapted the story and characters from either the Gameboy games or anime. Ash would have been a great post-credit scene.

Went and seen it last night was a good popcorn movie bit of fun.

The Highs
  • Justice Smith - This guy is legit, anyone who can get me emotionally invested while probably talking to a ball on a stick is a very good actor.
  • Reynolds/Pickachu - Talk about a scene stealer damn near every line Ryan got was hilarious
  • The Mr Mime Scene - Thought we had probably scene the bulk of the funny from that scene but boy was I wrong this bit had me and my friend nearly in tears
  • Pokemon jobs - Machamp as a traffic controller, seen a Charmander cooking something on his tail, the new gen ones that were being used as speakers was all hilarious.
The Lows
  • Kathryn Newton - she was really bad in most of her scenes I thought, I dunno if she was trying to ham it up but it just came off as bad acting a lot of the time.
  • The Fact That He Didn't Recognize His Dads Voice - This is just a silly one but really didn't get how Smith's character never even mentions how he sounds like his dad lol.

to be fair, he hadn’t seen his dad in ages

The more I've thought about the movie since I saw it the more "meh" I feel about it. It's still leaning more towards positive than negative though, I'd say 6/10 and that to me is the definition of a movie you can enjoy seeing once but not good enough where you will want to rewatch it a lot. It kinda felt like a non-Pokemon script that they worked Pokemon into during re-writes. It's not bad but it's very middle of the road/story you have seen before.

For me the whole "best videogame movie" hype feels a bit like faint praise. For me I would say Detective Pikachu is about equally good as the Warcraft movie, which I also felt was slightly more leaning to positive than negative but also being a slight disappointment.

I was actually surprised how little fan service was in this. I know there was some (you can't escape that) but this could easily have been packed with small references to both the anime and the games and I was a bit surprised how "casual friendly" it was.

So yeah I don't think you need to be a fan to enjoy it.

I really liked this. I haven't really cared about Pokemon in over 15 years but I was really excited to see this movie. It was great to see live-action Pokemon world. Some Pokemons looked a bit odd but most of them were great. I hope they make more movies like this.

The balloon scene with gas reminded me of Batman 1989:

I hope this is a one off that is followed by something a little bigger/more serious. I want to see Kanto and some battles/gym leaders and maybe some team rocket or something. I don’t need a forced sequel for Detective Pikachu, especially with how it ended...

Thing is, it was loaded with fan service, the whole movie was, but they were more subtle about it because they used it to build the world correctly.

206 million after 2 weekends... its already out in China/Japan and hasn't even reached 100 million in the U.S. Would it even reach 400 million at this point?

Yeah I mean it isn't necessarily bad, I prefer using it in a subtle way over shoving it in our face.

Just saw this last night and OMG! It was ****ing great! I don't know what I expected necessarily, but this was an extremely enjoyable movie and I'm super stoked to hear they are moving full steam ahead with this universe. Ryan Reynolds as pikachu was a constant delight, and the CGI was nigh perfect. The plot was interesting and the acting (while constantly over the top) was on point.

8.5/10 happy to see new blood on the scene in theaters.

I had low expectations going in and coming out of it I just felt very "meh" about it. It definitely shows its colours as a kid's movie going into the second half, and that's where it really fell off for me after a decent first half.
I don't regret seeing it in the theatre but I'm glad I used points instead of actual money.

And what kind of police department doesn't investigate the lack of a body before declaring someone dead? That part just bugged me.

I loved it!

I went in with tempered expectations after reading all the reviews (quick summaries minus the spoiler parts) in here. At first I wasn't really feeling it. Ryan's voice & Justice Smith's acting looked awkward at the beginning. Even Pikachu's introduction which looked very cute in the 1st trailer kinda fell flat for me. But things picked up when Kathryn Newton :ilv: graced the screen with Psyduck.

I loved all the scenes between Lucy and Tim (Pikachu was especially hilarious when those two are interacting).

BTDubz, I keep reading that Kathryn was razzie worthy in her role but honestly I loved her. F**k's wrong with y'all??

The final act was great which basically changed my outlook on the movie (not quite a 180 but it made the movie better for sure).

MewToo v Pikachu was awesome. Seeing Pika Pika power up and charge at MewToo in full speed gave me goosebumps and that twist with Tim's father got to me even tho MewToo's actions made no sense (the one decision he made after the crash). I got teary eyed at that part. It was very beautifully done.
