Season 5 had the unenviable task of following up the massive Season 4 game changer. In order to properly follow through, they really needed to take the show someplace new and mix things up.
Dexter should have reverted back to an untamed monster, yes it would mean all previous development would be moot, but that's what we want in this show. He's an anti-hero, and they just went with an angle that was forced and against type for him (letting her go).
It should have been the catalyst for Deb finding out because he's untamed, sloppy and angry. He feels no satisfaction for killing Trinity because all of his pleasure from that kill was focused on having him on the table and "winning". It wasn't a vengeance kill and so he's missing that feeling.
I agree 100% with this. Season 5 needed to take Dexter to extremely dark places. I would have liked to have seen him overwhelmed by an insatiable anger and desire to kill, and him killing his victims with excessive brutality.
I could go on forever about how much I dislike S5, from Lumen, to the lack of music and lazy cinematography, to the uninteresting story and how they made Dexter mopey. But I'll leave it at what I've said.
