To be honest Rita's death doesn't spoil any of Season 4. It's merely a development that sets up the status quo for Season 5.
The main story is about Trinity. Rita's death not so much a huge deal in regards to Season 4.

Oh man, with Mickey Mouse ears on. "I'm sorry for your loss." This is heart breaking to watch. :(

Yes that scene was as painful as I'd imagined it would be

wow what a powerful season premiere lots of emotion packed in this single episode off to a great start

Two hours left over here in cali.

It would still be a huge spoiler to put in an ad for the season premier of Season 4 though.

It's a huge spoiler since she's one of the main cast. And an important one at that.

Actually I would have preferred Mandy Patinkin against Dexter (Gideon)

Which is kind of ironic considering the actor who played Gideons nemisis (Frank, a serial killer in criminal minds) played Lundy in dexter XD

Don't get me wrong, I love Gideon. I really miss him being a part of Criminal Minds and would like for him to come back to that show, even if it is in a guest appearance type role. But a Gideon type character wouldn't really fit with the storyline I had proposed. Gideon's a burned out profiler who, while brilliant, has seen far too much death. My idea was for a brilliant, cocky, young profiler looking to make a name for himself/herself by trying to prove that the "Legendary Agent Lundy" was wrong about The Bay Harbour Butcher. So he/she would be a Spencer Ried type, only with an attitude. An "I graduated college at the age of 16, with a PhD in Forensic Psychology and I'm better than you" type attitude.

(PS: I know that this is the Dexter thread not the Criminal Minds thread, and that there aren't any crossover episodes planned . . . at least that I know of. I was just using characters from that show as examples.)

Exactly. And since Season 4 came out on DVD nearly 2 months before the season premier of Season 5 was set to air, it's totally reasonable for the TV, radio, and magazine ads to mention her death, as it's assumed all fans of the show have seen Season 4.

Very good premier. For a second there I really though that
they were going to change the whole show. Dexter was starting to go on the run and then murders some random guy in the bathroom. I thought they were going to turn Dexter into a real serial killer. That would take some serious balls on behalf of the show. But, while it would be interesting, I don't think it would work all that well.

The only issue I have is when Angel and Laguerta are at the funeral and she says that Dexter could have been witnessing their marriage while Rita was being murdered... they were married the at least day before Rita died (they were married in the episode "Hello Dexter Morgan")... I hate when a show can't keep track of its own continuity. If I'm mistaken, please let me know.

Wow, for God's sake that was tough to watch.
I have to admit to getting a little teary-eyed when Dexter was giving his eulogy. Amazing episode, simply and completely amazing.

They really need to do something about Quinn. I...I don't even know what, really.

I never "got" the Rita hate, per se. But, Quinn I do. I guess he could continue to be a *****e to Dexter, and maybe get some comedic bits there...but I'm just counting the days till he's collateral damage.

I don't think Dex will take the fall for Rita's death...can he really? How he'll account for the hours he was gone, actually killing another person, is another thing...

I just realized a flaw in your logic. Dexter couldn't have killed Rita because he was busy killing Trinity at the time. But Rita was killed by Trinity. So obviously Rita was killed before Dexter got to Trinity. Unless of course, one of Trinity's kids is so f**ked up by being raised by a psycho serial killer that they killed Rita while Dexter was killing their dad. That could make for an interesting twist.

Hmmmmmmm . . .

I always assumed Rita was killed during the period where Dexter found and snuck into Trinity's car.

As emotional as that premiere was...I'm still not too crazy about the show's direction. By killing Rita they've brought Dexter back to square one after moving him forward so much. Then, there's the whole Quinn sub-plot that's just a repeat of season 2's plot involving Doakes. I hate to say it, but I see this show jumping the shark this season.

I completely disagree. He's still moving forward, this episode was about him trying to slide back to what he originally was and ultimately being unable to because just as he loved Rita, he loves the kids and Deb and couldn't bring himself to abandon them. The only reason he came back was that he's NOT the monster that he used to be.

He's in a strange place right now but Dexter is still very much evolving.

That was a pretty great premiere. You can tell there is a lot of different emotions running through Dexter the whole episode. That freak out in the bathroom alone shows that this season is going to be an interesting journey and in no way is going to be like season 2.

not really they said they were married 10 hours ago when the funeral happened and they got married in The Getaway

Absolutley amazing premiere. Great episode, and Michael's best preformance as Dexter so far.

So did Dexter clean up the body?

And I liked the episode, but everything was shown in the trailers so nothing was surprising.

Great way to start the new season.

Anyone think the neighbor may have killed Rita? I know it's way out there, and pretty dumb to think that, but I'm getting a feeling that he may have been involved somehow.

Also wouldn't it have been funny if Peter Krause was the funeral director. :hehe:

That's an excellent take. Also I agree it would have been strangely amusing to see Krause as the Funeral Director. Really enjoyed the premiere. When Dexter tells the hillbilly in the bathroom that he had a really bad week I found it to be very believable and quite cathartic. At that very moment the realization of Rita being gone forever really hit him. Great way to start the season.

Why would the neighbor know and use Trinity's M.O.? The producers, Hall, Benz, Lithgow, basically everyone involved have stated that it was Trinity. People are over thinking it and looking for something that is not there. Arthur killed Rita.

Man last nights episode was heavy I can't wait to see where this season goes.
