Dexter

The awkwardness all over the ep was hard to watch, the ending was strong and now things are set up for Dex vs The FBI.

Deadline Reports
Broadcast wasn't the only one debuting series last night. The fifth season premiere of Showtime's flagship drama Dexter drew 1.8 million viewers, the series' highest-rated debut to date and Showtime's highest-rated original series premiere in 15 years. It was up 16% from last year's opener but down from the show's record-setting finale last season, which drew 2.6 million viewers. Including a rerun at 11 PM, the Dexter premiere last night was watched by a total of 2.3 million viewers, 22% up from last year. (Yet to come in are the ratings for HBO's premieres of Bored to Death and Eastbound and Down last night.)

I just finished watching it.

How painful an episode. And it was so hard to watch Dexter's sheer emotionlessness. It's the first time in the series that I've really been disconnected and unable to sympathize with Dexter because nothing is getting to him (which I think was a brilliant effect). And then it was a huge relief when Harry was able to get him to express his rage and Dexter's final realization at the funeral.

I just watched the premiere, my god that was great and horribly sad at the same time. It was so painful to watch Dexter tell Astor and Cody their mother was gone. I was hoping he would tell them off-screen but they made us watch every painful minute of it. And holy crap, Dexter's emotional breakdown in the bathroom was incredible! I swear that scene almost made me tear up. Dexter's emotional armor is breaking and he's discovering that he's more human than he thought, which shows that Dexter's not back to square one but still evolving to the next phase of his humanity.

Even though season 4 was incredible, i didnt know how i felt about the way they ended it, literally shattering dexter's world. I thought that maybe the showrunners were putting the show into a corner that they cant get out of, but this episode proved that season 5 has the potential to be the show's zenith. Yes, the mood and tone of the show's going to be much darker than its ever been but that could be a very good thing.

Oh and please kill Quin...just please kill him. How dare he be suspicious of Dexter? Look what happened to Doakes LOL.

I always assumed Rita was killed during the period where Dexter found and snuck into Trinity's car.

I never said she wasn't. But ChrisBaleBatman made it seem in his post that some people might think Dexter was Rita's killer (the spouce is usually the first person considered as a suspect during a homicide). And that Dexter's alibi would be that he was busy killing The Trinity Killer at the time of her murder. He might not have meant it like that, but it could be interpretted that way. I was just pointing out that if Dexter was killing Rita's killer, he couldn't have been doing it during the time of her death.

But if they decide to write into the story that it was during the time of her death that Dexter was killing and dismembering Trinity, that begs the question "Who did kill Rita?" Which could be an interesting angle for the show to take. Was it the neighbor? Was it Quinn? Was it one of Arthur's kids? His wife? Just something to think about.

I do have to wonder if that random he killed will somehow come back to bite him. I know it's a small thing, but they didn't show him cleaning up the mess he had made...and it was in open day light. Plus the owner of the place couldn't have been too far away, I would have been very curious had I heard Dexter's wailing coming from my bathroom lol.

I hope the show somehow explains that Dexter was hiding in Arthurs car while he was killing Rita.

As messed up as the whole thing is already, that would just tip it over the edge.

So who else thinks Deb is definitely discovering Dexter's secret this season?

I think she already knows deep down. She seems to be reacting very scared towards Dexter. Like a person would that doesn't want him to tilt to far to the dark side. I think she has always known something was up, deep down.

As far as the neighbor killing Rita. There is a small possibility that since he was over all the time. That he may have stumbled onto the Trinity file, & read about it. He was the one to get Cody out of the Shed right?

I hope that doesn't happen. I hope they keep Arthur the killer. Having Dexter hiding in Arthurs car while Rita is getting killed would be an interesting route to take.

Im torn on that. On the one hand if they decide to change Rita's killer to the neighbor, it think it'll be more satisfying to the viewer. I mean, we as the viewers want our hero to avenge Rita's death. We hate to see the hero lose which is why season 4's finale was sucha gut-punch. We never got the satisfying revenge kill that we should've got and our "hero" essentially lost.

However, narratively, making the neighbor Rita's killer wouldnt be a good choice. Narratively, the path they chose with killing Rita and having Arthur be her killer is brilliant...its just that we don't want that even though its a logical progression of Dexter's story. What goes around comes around and Dexter finally paid the cost of being a serial killer.

How happy would you all be if Dexter never got caught being the Bay Harbor Butcher. But was caught for something else. Like actually somehow being convicted for Ritas Death, or getting caught having killed that dude in the Bathroom last night?

It would be justice without everone finding out about his secret? I personally never want to see him caught. I agree with what he is doing. To be honest.

I could see Dexter getting away with all of the murders but losing everything that means anything to him.

Kind of like Vic Mackey from The Shield.

exactly, IMMUNITY........

Or the show ends with Dexter dying heorically

Maybe because of what happened to Rita. He dies saving, Astor, Cody, or Deb?

Damn...... Astor and Cody's mother and father died.......... indirectly by Dexter..... damnnnn

Good set up ep.

Does Deb sleep around or what?!

Glad they've finally found use for Quinn.

Good call, I like that idea. Although I must confess I haven't seen the last season of The Shield yet. I should rent that next payday.

Fantastic season premiere, definitely gut-wrenching and it was uncomfortable to see Dexter so...out of it until he finally let his emotions out. It will be interesting to see what happens over this season, especially the dynamic with the kids and all.

Awesome premiere. Some really sad stuff. I felt so bad for Dexter.

Unless it was the angle they used, the girl that plays Astor grew a lot over the summer. She looked almost taller than Hall. :funny:

Definitely do it dude. Well worth it, one of the greatest shows ever!

not really they said they were married 10 hours ago when the funeral happened and they got married in The Getaway

Nope, they were married during the episode "Hello, Dexter Morgan". Here is a synopsis:
http://www.pajiba.com/tv_reviews/dexter-s4e11-hello-dexter-morgan-recap.php

According to that: After he witnesses them get married, he goes up and kills the truck driver, Punches the neighbor in the face that night, the next day Arthur comes to the station, that night Dex and Rita decide to go on their trip, the next morning Rita leaves and is later murdered.

They got married like 2 days before Rita's death.

Here's a recap of "The Getaway":
http://dexterwiki.sho.com/page/The+Getaway+Full+Recap

The writers got the continuity wrong... It's not a big deal, it just seems like a silly mistake for the people who work on the show to make (I mean, it's not LOST we're talking about here, there isn't that much to keep track of).
