Diablo 3 | News | 1 Comment

The latest design journal has been posted on the Diablo 3 site that gives a bit of background information about how rift encounters are planned to provide the right mixture of monsters to keep players engaged and to provide mechanics to let player skill and legendary abilities shine. It's not just random monsters, but carefully orchestrated combinations of avoidance, basic attackers and some type of heavy hitter to keep things interesting.

Does Blizzard Have a Secret Diablo?

Posted Nov 07, 2016
Diablo 3 | Columns | 39 Comments

People were expecting something huge from Diablo at BlizzCon 2016. And while we got news of the Necromancer (it's awesome), and a Diablo 1 anniversary event (also awesome) we wanted more. We expected more. And it's that lack of a bigger expansion or sequel to Diablo 3 that makes us believe there's something bigger coming from Tristram.

Diablo III’s anniversary patch is available for testing

November 14, 2016 10 Comments

Looking forward to making Diablo III feel like the original Diablo for just a little while? The game’s most recent patch has hit the test server, and it contains the aforementioned anniversary event as its main feature. Now you can go back and explore the dungeon from the first game, complete with graphical downgrades to make the whole thing feel more like dungeon diving in the ’90s.

Of course, that’s not all the patch contains; there are also some additional graphical options for players, the 64-bit client for players on 64-bit operating systems, and the usual assortment of bug fixes and the like. The event itself is normally slated to run in January, but you’ll be able to test it now if you download and get started on the test server (there’s a whole guide to doing so). If you’re looking forward to the throwback, go on in and start testing; the developers will happily stay a while and listen to any bug reports.

Diablo III psyches players up for Season 9

December 27, 2016 12 Comments

On January 6th, Diablo III’s Season 9 is set to roll out worldwide and invite players to enjoy a fresh journey through the game’s content with new rewards.

Interesting portraits, pieces of the Conquerer’s set, stash tabs, a new class set, and a Rocky minipet are all part of the reward package that can be accumulated by playing through the season and hitting certain achievements. You shouldn’t take Rocky for granite either; the minipet will automatically collect gold for your character.
Blizzard is rotating Diablo III’s seasonal conquests as well: “Players that just gotta go fast can tackle Sprinter, Speed Racer, Speed Demon, or Need for Speed.

Got a thing for gold? Avarice or Avaritia might be right up your alley. If Cursed Events are more your style, Curses! and Stars Align might be more suitable challenges. Finally, if you enjoy facing a challenge without sets, The Thrill and Super Human are both making a return.”Read more

Diablo anniversary fever spreads across Blizzard’s library

December 29, 2016 20 Comments

Did you know that it was 20 years ago this week that the original Diablo released? Well, if you’re playing any Blizzard game at all, you will be made well aware of this fact soon enough.

Blizzard is rolling out an anniversary celebration across its entire library, with special events and gifts in Diablo III, Heroes of the Storm, Hearthstone, Overwatch, StarCraft II, and World of Warcraft.

Among the festivities include the recreation of the classic Diablo dungeon in Diablo III, a new challenger in Hearthstone’s Tavern Brawl, and Diablo III sprays in Overwatch. Blizzard also hinted at special encounters in World of Warcraft: “Strange things are afoot in the world of Azeroth as denizens of Sanctuary cross over into an unfamiliar world.”Read more

Diablo III previews the Darkening of Tristram

January 3, 2017 22 Comments

The centerpiece of Diablo’s anniversary event is Diablo III’s Darkening of Tristram, which puts more Diablo in the game. Seriously, it’s bringing back classic Diablo, complete with pixelated graphics, awful movement, and lots of classic bosses to smash to pieces.

It’s all part of the game’s next major patch, and wouldn’t you know it, you can take a closer look at what’s coming with the patch, complete with a video preview you can check out down below.

Unfortunately, there’s no word on whether or not you can enjoy this look back at the start of the franchise without making everything look like it’s displayed on the monitor you threw out in 2002 when you got your first flatscreen.

Of course, the anniversary content isn’t the only thing coming to the game; there are also item improvements for various set items and revisions the the greater rift mechanics. Flying enemies can now be killed in mid-air, while enemies who can become unattackable for a time such as Rockworms will spend less time hiding and more time attacking. Check out the video just below, and get ready to hack your way through the dungeons of Tristram all over again in the near future.

Diablo III starts testing new armory and crafting mat storage
February 1, 2017 5 comments

Lo and behold, a new patch hath landed on the Diablo III public test server. And there was great rejoicing, as it contained many boons for war-weary adventurers.
There are actually two new features that are making their way into the game with Patch 2.5, starting with the armory. The armory allows players to save up to five builds per character, taking a snapshot of their equipped build and then pulling that gear out of storage when needed. This way, characters can swap between gear load-outs much more easily than before.

The other feature is an additional storage tab devoted solely to holding a player's crafting materials. "Crafting materials picked up or obtained through salvaging will now appear in a separate storage tab, freeing up space in the shared stash," Blizzard said. "This tab can be accessed through the inventory window."Read more

Diablo III is ending Season 9 on March 17

March 6, 2017 6 comments

Have you done everything you wanted to do in Diablo III's Season 9 challenge? If not, the good news is that you still have a little bit of time. The bad news is that it really is just a little time, as the current season is ending on March 17th. So you might be able to clear one or two final challenges along the way, but you'll be out of luck if you're trying to accomplish something big with zero progress up to this point.

Whether you're out of luck or you've gotten almost everything done, you'll still be able to greet the new season on March 31st.

The usual rules about transitions between seasons and the de-seasonification of seasonal characters will apply; if you're unfamiliar with the transition, check out the full rundown to see what happens to your seasonal challenge characters and what transfers over to your normal play in about a week.Read more

Diablo III launches season 10 for both PC and console

April 2, 2017 7 comments
http://massivelyop.com/tag/diablo-III
Diablo III's 10th season is officially live as of this weekend, capping off last week's 2.5.0 patch by welcoming console players to the seasonal fun.

If you've never played through the seasons before, know that they're an epic way to play the game for the first time, zip through a class you've always wanted to try, or rack up a ton of loot on a rebirthed toon, even if you don't finish every last achievement.
"Seasons are an optional, recurring game mode that offers players the opportunity to periodically start fresh, leveling new Normal or Hardcore heroes from level 1 without any currency, resources, items, or previously earned Paragon experience. Similar to the separation between Normal and Hardcore game modes, Seasonal heroes will also have their own shared stash and Artisan progression. Any currency, materials, recipes, items, Paragon experience, and Artisan progression earned during a Season will be rolled over to a player's non-Seasonal profile once the Season concludes."

Diablo III sums up why Necromancers are getting smaller sets and weaker cooldowns

May 4, 2017 3 comments

Had you forgotten about the Diablo III Q&A stream about the Necromancer? Because that happened. Not to worry, though; there’s a full summary available for those who missed it, going over all of the important questions. For example, Necromancers will not get 7-piece item sets, specifically because the developers want to retain the identity of sets and mixing and matching pieces eradicates that.

This is not, it seems, the answer many players wanted, but it is an answer.
Blood is Power and Bone Armor are both receiving changes as well, as it was possible for testers to more or less become wholly invulnerable with the right loadout. Players who jump between platforms for the game will also note that the Necromancer pack is not purchased cross-platform; you’ll have to buy it for every platform where you’d like to play a Necromancer. You also will not be able to increase the total amount of time your pets remain up and active. So that collection of answers may not give you the answers you’d really like to hear across the board.
