Diablo III explains damage number abbreviations and colors

January 24, 2016 17 Comments

Diablo III is a game that deals in numbers, and given the sheer output of digits that a combat counter can produce, Blizzard’s engineers have been struggling with the issue of what to display on screen without overwhelming the player. The team has come up with two solutions in the most recent update and penned a dev diary to explain the changes.

“Patch 2.4.0 introduced a couple of new features to address this,” Blizzard explained. “First, we’ve introduced a new in-game option to truncate numbers and display them using abbreviations. Second, we’ve added an entirely new feature that highlights some of your largest damage numbers in a new color.”

The issue of portraying important numbers on-screen grows trickier when you factor in localization, as all of Diablo III’s 13 languages don’t handle numbers the same way. Even picking out a color for important number events (the studio went with orange, by the way) took some serious consideration on behalf of the team.

How Diablo III’s set dungeons are built

February 7, 2016 5 Comments

There’s a new kind of challenge in Diablo III with the advent of Set Dungeons, specific challenges with pre-determined sets. The latest entry on the official site explains how these set dungeons came to be, with the overall design intent being similar to the goal behind the game’s season progression: a new way to play and experience the game for players eager for a new challenge.

Senior game designer Alex Sulman came up with the basic idea for Set Dungeons during a team-wide brainstorming session, with the whole Diablo III team trying out new passion projects and seeing how they worked in the game. The original intent was to make them solo-only experiences, but ultimately having them be available for multiple players provided a better overall experience, even though the dungeons are possible to complete while solo. If you’re curious about the steps between the concept and the final execution, give the full entry a read-through.

Diablo 3 : More Devs Being Hired for Unannounced Diablo Project

Posted Mar 01, 2016

The Blizzard Jobs page has been updated with an expanded advertisement for developers to work on an unannounced Diablo universe project.

The job postings originally cropped up last Octoberbut have been recently updated with a search for a Senior Concept Artist, Senior Character Artist and a Lighting Artist.
The hope was that Blizzcon 2015 would unveil the mystery behind the new positions but came to nothing in the end.

What do you speculate this could be? Head to SlyLoK's thread to see what others are thinking before adding your own ideas.

Diablo 3 : Some Legendary Gems to Be Overhauled in v2.4.1

Posted Mar 17, 2016

A new design journal has been published on the Diablo 3 site that lays out some forthcoming design changes to legendary gems in the game.
The article begins with a discussion of gem basics, what role each fulfills and how some have slipped through the cracks as far as being worth using. To address this, several gems will be undergoing significant changes in the next patch.
Gems that will be buffed:

  • Enforcer
  • Gogok of Swiftness
  • Mirinae
  • Simplicity's Strength
Gem overhauled and 'nerfed':

  • Taeguk
The changes will bring some much needed variety to usage and utility for players so, all in all, it seems to be a series of good decisions.

GDC 2016: Diablo’s UI was designed to pass the ‘mom test’

March 21, 2016 19 Comments

David Brevik, one of the original co-founders of Blizzard North and probably best known to MMO players for his long tenure at the helm of Marvel Heroes, gave a talk at GDC that sheds new light on the birth of the Diablo franchise just in time for its 20th birthday.

Brevik told the audience he came up with the idea for a turn-based roguelike — Diablo — in high school and pitched the idea around, only to be told no one wanted to invest in RPGs because “RPGs are dead.” But post-Warcraft Blizzard eventually took on the publishing rights and turned it into a real-time ARPG that struggled with cheating, invented the hotbar, and needed to pass the “mom test.” You hear that, hardcores? Diablo III begins testing season 6

March 28, 2016 25 Comments

Have you finished all of your Diablo III season 5 goals and achievements yet? You best get a move on it, little doggy, because season 6 is on its way.

Blizzard began testing season 6 this past week, encouraging fans to check out the new content. While the studio has yet to announce the end date for season 5, the three-month limit means that the season will probably conclude around April 15th. Players will be able to carry their characters over with the new seasonal journey, although each character’s progress will be reset.

Speaking of Diablo III, the game also just celebrated its two-year anniversary of its sole expansion, Reaper of Souls. “The Reaper of Souls expansion overhauled the Diablo III experience,” Blizzard said, “and we couldn’t have come this far without our passionate and amazing community. Thank you for not only your support, but your feedback throughout these two short years.”

Diablo III shows off the rewards for the newly arrived Season 6

April 26, 2016 7 Comments

It’s time to get up and start earning rewards for Diablo III‘s Season 6! “Now now,” you whine. “I have to go to work today. Wait, how did you get in my house? Leave me alone, I’m trying to do things.” But there’s no time for all of those things, by which I of course mean there’s plenty of time, but also plenty of fun rewards for dedicated slayers of demons with an eye toward the cosmetic and the functional.

As with last season, players who complete certain portions of the season journey will be rewarded with Hedrig’s Gift containing parts of a specific class set, allowing players to assemble a set with surety as they stomp through demons. There’s also a new portrait frame, a new banner, and more storage space available to players who complete the conqueror’s journey in the game once again. Check out the details on the individual class sets up for grabs this season on the official site, and get to work stomping those demons!

But please don’t do so at the behest of someone who has actually entered your home to encourage you, that’s kind of horrifying.

EP Daily Rundown for July 4, 2016

Happy fourth of July to all our fans in the US! Today, we celebrate independence with early details on a new Diablo game and the latest on Overwatch. We also get gory with Total War: Warhammer, wreck-it with new sequels from Disney. have an early look at the new season of Samurai Jack, get a post-mortem from Nintendo on Star Fox Zero, and finally, get scientific with the cool new Jupiter mission from NASA!
Blizzard hasn’t finished looting the darkest depths of hell. The studio has revealed that it’s working on an all-new Diablo project. That’s according to a recent job posting on their official website, which is looking for a game director to work on an unannounced Diablo title. The job posting claims that the new Diablo project will be a AAA game with a large development team that “leads the Diablo series into the future.” This could mean just another Diablo 3 expansion, or an all-new game like Diablo 4. The posting requests applicants have experience with “online games, action games, and/or role-playing games,” which indicates that the new Diablo project, whatever it is, will be in the same action-RPG genre as the previous games in the series. Given Blizzard’s lengthy development cycles, we’ll probably have to wait a while to find out more about the new project. It’s not surprising that Blizzard is looking for a new game director to lead the Diablo series; Diablo 3 game director Josh Mosqueira recently left the company after joining the team in 2011.

In other news from Blizzard, the studio’s most recent game Overwatch finally has a long-awaited feature on all platforms. The ranked competitive multiplayer mode is now available on both the Xbox One and PS4, following its release on the PC last month. This is one of the most requested features for the game. Ranked competitive modes are basically a more intense version of normal PvP based around a system of divisions and tiers, and players love them because you can rank up faster and collect more rewards than normal. Now that competitive play is out on all platforms, Blizzard can concentrate on new modes, characters, and other updates for Overwatch. Expect to see more in the coming months.

The Warhammer universe is getting a healthy dose of good ol’ fashioned blood and gore. The new Blood for the Blood God DLC is now available for Total War: Warhammer. It costs $3.29 CDN and makes the game a lot more violent, adding new, M-rated effects like blood spurts and limb and head dismemberment, along with a much more ravenous version of the game’s giant. This DLC actually raises the game’s age rating in most territories, and this isn’t the first time the developers have done this; blood and gore DLC is a staple of the Total War franchise, with many of the previous games splattering players with similar updates after launch.

Disney wants to keep wrecking it at the box office. The video game-inspired animated movie Wreck-It Ralph is officially getting a sequel, set to smash theatres on March 9, 2018. According to director Rich Moore, this time around, Ralph will bring his wrecking havoc to online gaming, which means audiences can expect to see plenty of references to modern video games alongside the classic arcade characters that populated the first film. Fans of the first movie are sure to be happy that a sequel is in development; Disney had hinted that they were working on one, but this is the first official confirmation that it’s on the way.

And speaking of animated follow ups, the best animated samurai on television is wandering back to the airwaves. The Cartoon Network has released the first behind the scenes footage for their upcoming fifth season of Samurai Jack. The animated chanbara series ended its run on television back in 2004, but the lasting popularity of the show and fan demand prompted the network to make more. The same creative team is back, and rather than pick up just after the events of Season 4, the new season will take place 12 years later, with an older and more jaded version of Jack continuing his quest to destroy the demon Aku. Since the fifth season is being made today, it will use a more modern digital animation process, although the team is doing everything they can to make sure it has the same look and feel of the hand-drawn original. The other big change is that the fifth season will air on Adult Swim, which means there will be more samurai-appropriate levels of violence and mature subject matter. The fifth season of Samurai Jack will begin later this year.

Nintendo thinks you should give a certain Wii U game another chance. When asked by Game Informer what the most under appreciated Wii U game is, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto named Star Fox Zero. It received mostly negative reviews due largely to its forced motion controls, which can only be partially disabled, and many players said they’d rather have a more traditional control option like the classic Star Fox games. Miyamoto says that if players approach Star Fox Zero without those preconceived notions, they’d like it a lot more. What do you think? Were players too hard on Star Fox Zero, or is Nintendo to blame for not giving you the option to disable the motion controls completely? Let us know in the comments below.

Miyamoto thinks that another Wii U-exclusive, Pikmin 3, was also underappreciated. He says that it’s the kind of game you have to play a few times in order to get the full effect, but most players don’t have time to let games sink in anymore. He adds that gamers are becoming consumable products that players beat and move on, so it’s harder and harder for games like Pikmin 3 to find an audience. Nintendo doesn’t have much time to dwell on the failures of the Wii U; they’re already working on their next console, codenamed the NX, due early next year.

The biggest planet in the Solar System is about to reveal its secrets. NASA’s Juno spacecraft is scheduled to enter orbit around Jupiter tonight at around 9:00 PDT. The probe was launched back in 2011, and although there have been several probes that flew by Jupiter, this will only be the second one in human history to actually enter orbit. It will study the atmosphere and environmental conditions of the gas giant, sending back more data than we’ve ever had, including how much water there is in the atmosphere. Juno will also let us know for the first time if Jupiter has a solid core; we’re still not sure if there’s rock under all that cloud, or if the whole thing is just a giant ball of gas held together by gravity. As with every space mission, there’s a chance that the probe will burn up when it tries to enter orbit, so its five-year journey may end up being for nothing. If you want to be on the edge of your seat and watch the orbital insertion unfold live, click here to watch the official live-stream from NASA’s mission headquarters. The stream begins tonight at 7:30 PDT. ,

Diablo III’s season six is concluding on July 22, season seven coming in August

July 8, 2016 16 Comments

Diablo III — on the PC at least — is all about the seasonal fun these days, and players who have worked hard to attain all of the achievements and rewards from season six only have a couple of more weeks left to put a cap on it. Blizzard announced today that season six will wrap up worldwide on July 22nd, with season seven to follow two weeks later on August 5th.

For first-timers wondering what happens at the conclusion of the season, the studio had these sage words to share: “Those who have played through a few seasons know there has been no shortage of gold, gear, or paragon levels to earn. So what happens to all that hard earned progress when a season ends? In short, you get to keep just about all of it.”

The conclusion of season six could well be a portent that Patch 2.4.2 is imminent. The update promises new Torment difficulty levels in addition to plenty of class, item, and bug adjustments.

Diablo III shows off the rewards and progress for Season 7

July 19, 2016 21 Comments

It’s almost time for that next big addition to Blizzard‘s game. Sure, it’s not here yet, but there’s just enough to keep you excited until the big update happens in August. We’re talking, of course, about the next season for Diablo III. What did you think we meant?

Season 7 will include several of the improvements that were found in Season 6, including armor set rewards for clearing chapters. The new season will also rotate in some conquest objectives from seasons past while implementing new challenges as well. Players can expect te new season to land in the game on August 5th, although the console versions are still left out of the seasonal rush. If you’re ready to tackle the game again with a whole new trajectory, keep your eyes peeled for more information about rewards and get ready for all of the new challenges.

Diablo 3 : New Torment Levels, Bounties, Overhauled Legendaries Arrive

Posted Aug 02, 2016

Diablo 3 has been updated to v2.4.2 that bring three brand new Torment levels to the game as well as
several class updates, legendary item overhauls, campaign and adventure mode improvements and much more.

  • Players were finding that pulling monsters from extended ranges to a single point on the map and crowd controlling them onto that spot was the most effective strategy, especially in group play. Not only does this cause server performance issues, but it is a stagnant, non-interactive way to play. These changes are targeted at making crowd control more situational, ensuring individual contributors in a group can add to the damage of the party more frequently.

  • Gold rewards have been adjusted. The primary gold sink at the end-game is Empowered Rifts. We want to maintain a general ratio that when you are running Greater Rifts at a particular tier, you can empower approximately 1/3rd of them. Due to the rate at which gold rewards from Greater Rifts and empower costs were scaling it made the gold reward from Nephalem Rifts, Gilded Barons and The Vault feel insignificant by comparison. Lowering the growth rate of gold costs restores the relative value of these other activities while maintaining the ability to empower approximately 1/3rd of your Greater Rifts.

Diablo 3 : Season 7 is a Go-Go-Go!

Posted Aug 05, 2016

Diablo 3 players who love seasonal play will be happy to hear that Season 7 has officially begun.
During the journey, players will need to create a specially created or converted character (stripped of everything and reduced to level 1) under the 'Season" tag. Starting at level 1, players will work through objectives all the way through the level cap that will see them earn a complete gear set, a seasonal pet, and a new portrait frame. Players can also take part in season-unique achievements called Conquests.
Seasons are an optional, recurring game mode that offers PC players the opportunity to periodically start fresh, leveling new Normal or Hardcore heroes from level 1 without any currency, resources, items, or previously earned Paragon experience. Similar to the separation between Normal and Hardcore game modes, Seasonal heroes will also have their own shared stash and Artisan progression. Any currency, materials, recipes, items, Paragon experience, and Artisan progression earned during a Season will be rolled over to a player's non-Seasonal profile once the Season concludes.

Diablo III’s 7th season has begun

Diablo III’s 7th season of play is live in all regions, Blizzard announced last night. This season includes adjusted pacing for the set rewards; they’re spaced out over the chapters instead of dumped at the end, a great change for people who play along normally and avoid the tail-end grind.
“Seasons are an optional, recurring game mode that offers PC players the opportunity to periodically start fresh, leveling new Normal or Hardcore heroes from level 1 without any currency, resources, items, or previously earned Paragon experience. Season 7 is rumbling to a close in Diablo III

October 7, 2016 9 Comments

For everything, there is a season, and in the case of Diablo III, there are several seasons.

One of those seasons is coming to a close soon, in fact, so players who have taken part in the antics of season 7 will need to be ready for the rollover. Sure, you’re ready for the fact that your seasonal characters will now be normal characters, but what will you do about blood shards? Do you have too many blood shards? You didn’t think about blood shards at all, did you?!

That’s all right; if you have too many you’ll just be temporarily placed over the cap, but you can’t pick up more until you’ve spent some.

The full rundown has information on what will happen to your characters and your various achievements, as well as how unlocks are awarded for your successful achievements during the season. Almost anything unlocked on an individual seasonal character will roll back into your main account, including the total amount of experience (not levels) earned toward Paragon rank.

If you have a seasonal character, check out the full rundown and get ready for the transition when season 7 officially ends.
