🇺🇸 Discussion: Guns, The Second Amendment, NRA - Part II

US News
In all honesty as a moderate Libertarian (I know gasp Krypton), I believe in a federal background check when purchasing firearms is a fair compromise than outright banning ARs. I would even go further and add to it that the federal government will allow the state governments to ban ARs if they see fit.

The Constitution is a piece of paper. Designed to be changed throughout history. This deification of the founding fathers is a problem. The Constitution is not perfect. It needs to be changed. And has been. 17 times.

I believe only once in all the history of the United States was it changed to reduce rights and that was quickly changed back.

I feel like that's a relative term, based upon who is the benefactor and who is not. No doubt, there were slaveowners who were saying that their right to property was being infringed by the 13th amendment. The 8th amendment could have been stepping on a police officer's right to protect the community. Some people probably felt like they were being disenfranchised by the Voting Rights Act.

And again, you don't have a right to own whatever gun you want unregulated. Just because you guys all want to interpret the constitution that way, doesn't make it so. Can you buy an Uzi right now? Nope. So, there is a line. We're arguing where the line should be.

Also, we don't need an amendment to start the process. This could easily be done through legislation and the courts.

I mean, a fair amount of people lost their right to certain property after the Civil War...

And the founding fathers intended for the Constitution to be updated as the world changed. They didn't expect it to stay static for 230+ years. Which is why we have Amendments and interpetations and revisions of the Constitution.

Certain rights and Amendments need to be treated carefully but not to the point of actual physical harm to other people.

Free speech can and does cause a lot of physical harm to people, it has so many bad effects that there's an argument it should be limited and yet it generally has been expanded over time, including to new, potentially more dangerous mediums.

When it does cause physical harm it becomes a crime. That sometimes the law doesn't enforce that when it does happen is also a crime.

And if that wasn't a red flag... saying you will slaughter people should always be a default taking away of their weapons.

And Trump is claiming background checks would not have stopped this shooter. So, I guess that is the official back track.

Guns come from god now according to the nut jobs. (There were no guns in the bible, they weren't invented yet.)

Horrible news, hope everyone pulls through who's injured especially the 22 month year old baby.

Is it really timing with them or just planned? I don't even know anymore.

With the frequency of shootings it doesn't matter.
