As someone that generally doesn't like these kind of movies and hasn't seen/read any previous versions, I thought this looked very good. Cinematic, enigmatic and exciting are the words that spring to mind. And ScarJo sounded great.

First Hayley Atwell played Cinderella's mother, now Scarlet Johansson aka Black Widow plays Kaa the evil Python, what's probably next: Robert Downey Jr playing Jafar and Chris Evans playing Scar

WTF..I just read that the movie is mostly CGI, including the jungle itself. That's amazing.

Given how big a celebrated deal mad max got for being 'all' practical as well as all this supposed starwars direction..
I find our circles response to this movie being 'non practical' mostly surprising.

Just goes to show I guess.

James Spader will play Scar (via mo-cap), Shaun Toub will play Jafar, RDJ will voice Iago, Chloe Bennett will play Mulan, and Benedict Cumberbatch will play Mufasa.

As for the CGI vs. non-CGI debate, it depends on the context/situation/what kind of movie it is, and does the movie end up being decent. For example, no one complains about Avatar or Sin City having tons of CGI because it works for those films (you couldn't have really done them without it TBH).

Maybe it's a case-by-case basis that he forms his opinions just like anyone else. Why do you even care anyway?

I thought the story was supposed to take place in India.

Yes, the original story (Jungle Book (1894)) by Kipling was set in India which was then under British rule.

Yeah thats a possibility.

Gigantopithecus Blacki stood 10' tall and weighed around 1200 pounds. Orangutans are its closest living relative.

Here is a comparison between Gigantopithecus blacki, a grown man, and Gigantopithecus giganteus:

Homo erectus and Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens all lived on the earth at the same time as Gigantopithecus Blacki which only went extinct 100,000 years ago. Primitive man would have been terrified of something like Blacki. Blacki may have been the inspiration for our big foot legends, but thats a discussion for a different time.

Yup, that's what they did.

"We changed it to a Gigantopithecus,” explains Favreau, referring to an extinct great ape species, “because orangutans don’t live in that part of the world.”

Neither do Brown Bears, but Baloo looks a lot like a Brown Bear in that trailer.

The same article I linked to says that they modeled Baloo off a sloth bear. I guess they started with a sloth bear design and tweaked it some so it more resembles the Baloo we know.

RDJ would make a great genie!

Chris Evans should play the basic love interest in 'Pocahontas'.

Well technically Gigantopithecus dont live in India either. They have been extinct for 100,000 years.

It would have been better and more sensible to just make Louie an orangutan. 99% of viewers dont have a clue where orangutans live or dont live or care about it. They are watching a movie about talking animals. Viewers arent going to draw the line at an orangutan being in India. And the average viewer also wont know that something like Gigantopithecus existed. So all they are going to be thinking is that Louie has been made into a ludicrously large orangutan.

Dumb decision, Favreau.

I like it personally. It makes sense given his title as "King" that he'd be larger than life, and him being perhaps the last of his kind would make the other primates idolize him.

And what it goes to show is that neither CGI or practical effects are inherently bad or good; it all depends on context and execution.

Trailers was good. Only thingsI don't like is the credits, Instead of getting voice actors they just got big name celebrities, and the obviousness of the CGI Jungle.

They're all contracted to the same overlord, who knows.

But these big name celebrities aren't really all that popular with the kiddies, except maybe ScarJo to an extent.

I can tell you that my niece does not care one bit about who voices these characters or any characters for that matter. And Im guessing its the same for most children. Young kids dont watch movies for particular voice actors.

Most kids didn't watch the Pixar movies for the voice talent. If they watch Toy Story, they might recognize Tim Allen's voice from the Santa Clause movies.

Unless its like Robin Williams as the Genie.

It's part of multi-pronged marketing. A movie like Jungle Book isn't guaranteed to have children clamoring to see it; they might, but they might not, as the franchise means nothing to anyone under 20 who doesn't read (which is most Americans under 20). By having some recognizable names in it, it helps with brand recognition among parents, who will take a second look at that movie and then realize that it would be good to take their kids to. Selling a ticket to a parent actually sells 4-5 tickets at the same time.

Singing? No, not singing. Walken just talking the words over the background music.

Oh. Oobee! Doo.

I wanna. Be. Like! You.

I wanna. Walk. Like! You.

Talk like. You. Too!

It's time to cause some childhood trauma.
