Live Action 'Dumbo'

I actually liked it. It's not great by any stretch, but it has great moments. I liked it a lot better than any other Disney remake sans The Jungle Book. If you want to feel bad for a little elephant and have some effective Burton imagery, it does the trick.
Pretty much my thoughts. The set design was really impressive as well as the CGI. I think it takes some time to get going, but it's still fairly entertaining. Especially the latter half

Michael Keaton’s character V.A. Vandevere is like an amalgamation of P.T. Barnum and Evil Walt Disney, right down to his “Dreamland” amusement park that suspiciously resembles Disneyland. Also the way he preys on and consumes smaller circuses.
Again, how did Disney "OK" this? Unless they were just giving Burton carte blanche, which as history as proven, is NOT a good idea.

Well, technically/mathematically, they're mixed.

Disney has had it's own share of failures, it's just that nobody likes to talk about those, as it's successes are so spectacular that they manage to keep people's attention away from flop movies.

BFG, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Mary Poppins Returns were recent flops.

Mary Poppins Returns is not a flop. It under-performed massively w.r.t expectations but that doesn't make it a flop.

One good thing about MPR skewing heavily towards domestic is that the movie made more than it's rumored production budget from North American box office alone which means the actual break even point for MPR will be reasonable and within reach once we factor in the OS numbers. I think Disney won't be happy with MPR's theatrical earnings (the plum December/SW slot meant huge expectations from MPR during the 4th quarter) but it wouldn't be a big write-off either.

Yea, I realized that but was too lazy to correct my post.

I mean a Star Wars movie bombed under Disney. I know circumstances were stacked against that movie but still, it's freaking STAR WARS and IT F**KING BOMBED.

It opened in China in fourth place with just $1,7 million in its first day...

It didn’t BOMB! which is a word people throw around easily. It disappointed.

If you're talking about my post on Solo: A Star Wars Story then I would like to know your thoughts on it. What makes you think that the movie wasn't a bomb at the BO??

Dumbo hasn't really bombed yet, but it's reviews aren't very good.

Is it that surprising? Tim Burton is not the filmmaker he once was. His Alice in Wonderland was not very good either. The movie never especially looked that good.
I guess going off of Burton's last 3 films, combined with a pretty popular Disney IP, I figured it would be a decent movie and mostly like, like I said somewhere in the 65 to 75% range. So somewhat surprised this is in the 50s.

I'm not surprised it isn't going to make a lot of money, but I am surprised that it's not at least a solid tomato.

I'm confused. Are we seriously debating whether Solo bombed or not? It didn't underperform. It's not about being part of one of the biggest franchises and not making as much money as the studio executives hoped for. The movie lost money. Early reports said something about a 50 million loss. Maybe more. It killed any other Star Wars spin-off movies in development. It's the definition of a box office bomb.

That may be so, but let's not bring China into this. China never got the original movie back in the day so they missed out and therefore any time they get any newer Star Wars movie is ALWAYS underperforms in China. That's normal.

About to watch it now and barely got my ass a seat.

I do just enough to pique your curiosity.

45M should never be viewed as a disappointment but in this age when every damn movie has to be 100M or above to even be out the red it's a problem.

I don't see Disney breaking even here with Shazam coming out next weekend. This might barely scrape past $90M dom and $300M WW

Its that $170M budget that's hurting right now. If Dumbo was under $100M budget, this is a good number.
