Not sure Elba is doing much for me in the role. He doesn't sound menacing enough. There should be a certain tension to Shere-Khan and he just sounds bland (judging from the clip, that is).

Kind of agree. There should be an almost intense seething coming from him but he's sounding a bit soft and not pissed enough.

Is it just me or is the marketing for this almost non-existent?

I've been seeing tv spots everywhere.

Every other channel has been showing it. I'm definitely gonna check it out come the 15th.

I guess I've been missing them. I saw one or two in the past couple of weeks but it didn't seem as heavily marketed as Cinderella or Maleficent.

Everyone will disagree with me on this, as I fully expect them to, but this should have been a non-dialogue film. No speaking. No voice acting, nothing. Let the performances come through the body language and facial expressions and music.

I was excited for this film but watching the latest trailer kinda killed it for me. The very moment I heard the animals talk, all the magic and wonder went right out the window. Everything comes across now as a mega-star studded Hollywood fest and that's not what I want to think about while watching this movie.

Honestly, a silent-esque film would have been risky and, in my opinion, far better and less cheesy.

The voices aren't doing it for me so far.

Christopher Walken's voice is just way too recognizable and distinctive and kind of pulls you out of the movie, or me at least. I think it's better when voice acting has a level of anonymity to it.

Also Elba and Johansson just sound bland. Isn't Cumberbatch Shere Khan in the other version? He has a much more menacing voice than Elba, or at least as Smaug or Star Trek's Khan.

To its credit, this is the first live action Jungle Book film to feature talking animals. The 1994 film only had dialogue when Mowgli interacted with humans, which made it more like Tarzan.

The animals talked in the original book anyway, so if anything, a Jungle Book film where the animals didn't talk would be less faithful.

Yeah, the animals need to talk. Serkis is doing that with his, so they're not like being inaccurate. I do wish they had Walken singing I Wanna Be Like You, though. I feel that would've been a contender for best song on principle.

Agreed.

Richard M. Sherman, who wrote songs for the 1967 film alongside his late brother Robert B. Sherman, also returned to write new songs for the film.[25] "The Bare Necessities", originally written by Terry Gilkyson, will be included and sung by Murray.[26] Some of the lyrics to "Trust in Me" were spoken by Kaa in the film's teaser trailer.[27] There will be two brand new versions of ‘The Bare Necessities’ — one performed by Bill Murray and Neel Sethi and another performed by Dr. John and The Night Trippers. Scarlett Johansson is credited with performing Kaa’s ‘Trust In Me’ and Christopher Walken tackles an updated version of King Louie’s ‘I Wanna Be Like You (2016)’ with additional lyrics by original Disney songwriter Richard Sherman.[28]

I agree.

Los Lobos does the best version of it (as of right now) iMO

There's just something about talking animals in live action that doesn't work for me. It's fine in a cartoon, but in a live action film it just seems silly to me. I can't recall ever seeing a movie where it worked. Maybe Lars Von Trier's Antichrist.

There was a TV movie adaptation of Animal Farm from 1999 that did a pretty good job in making them believable. Probably because it was mostly puppetry and minimal CGI and the content was serious.

In the new IMAX trailer there definitely seems to be more echo and things added to the voice to make them sound like they are being spoken in the space that the movie takes place in instead of just being laid over the footage.

I really do think people have been judging the sound mix a bit harshly with it mostly coming through computer and phone speakers.

Based on the clips, but I'm really liking Lupita Nyongo's wolf and Kingsley's Bagheera. Walken's King Louie is just distracting because it's so unapologetically Walken.

Reminds me of Kylo Ren's voice in the trailers as opposed to the movies.

Lupita and Murray (Haven't loved him this much in years) walked away with the film in terms of the voice-work, for my money, and the kid was great. Real find by Favs. Kingsley was good too.

I imagine that Walken as King Louie would be the bone of contention with viewers. Me personally, I loved it.
