Disney sets Rob Marshall to adapt "Into the Woods"

Yeah, if anyone walked into Sweeney Todd not expecting a musical, they have no one to blame but their own dumb asses.

I saw Sweeney Todd - in NY, in a movie theater literally surrounded by Broadway theaters - and there were still audible groans from people in the audience every time someone started singing because they didn't know it was a musical.

Seriously.

I think concealing the musical elements is going to backfire on Disney, if their next trailer doesn't show it. You want to make sure the Sondheim fans will want to see it, as well as parents and their children.

Into the Woods isn't really for children. I know they're toning it down from the stage version, but it's still not a family movie.

To be fair, neither was Maleficent except for bad writing/performances in some spots, yet it has a large family audience loving it.

You have got to love that. And to think, the reason I was so excited was because it was musical, one I had waited quite a while to see adapted. And it didn't disappoint.

Not quite sure how I feel about the Wolf's and the Witch's looks yet. I think I might need to actually see them in action (clip/trailer/film itself/whatever) before I decide :hmm

The costumes look pretty bad to me. Especially Depp.

I like Depp's wolf design. I know he's not a "real wolf," but it's a metaphor, so why complain? I'm a big fan of In The Company Of Wolves anyway, and it kind of reminds me of that.

Oh he's not a real wolf? lol. I literally have no knowledge of this play.
The costumes definitely look like costumes you'd see in a stage show. I guess that does make sense.

The costumes look sort of cheap and bland to me. Not nearly as lush as the stage version. I don't even know what Rapunzel's dress is supposed to be. It's just weird.

Featurette with just a few snippets of singing finally. Looks great!

Nice to finally hear some singing. Still reserving judgement on the Wolf's look though until I see more of it in action/context. I get what they're going for on it, I do. I just.... the original broadway cast is so ingrained in my childhood that seeing such a different look for the Wolf is kind of jarring *lol*. I'm sure I'll get used to it though :yay:

Yeah, I'm not too crazy about his look as well.
Too bad that anatomically correct wolf won't be seen on screen.:woot:

The problem with the Wolf concept isn't that it's a bad concept so much.

The execution is lousy. It just looks really half-assed.

Just to explain my comment, in the stage play, the wolf is more like a "real wolf," i.e. a humanoid with a gentleman's coat, but naked from the waist down (with hairy wolf legs, like a satyr) and a wolf's mask that covers most of the actor's face.

But you can't cover up Depp's face, so they went with that. I don't really mind it, as this doesn't need to be an authentic werewolf movie or anything. The werewolf is supposed to resemble a creepy human sexual predator anyway.

Nice to finally get some snippets of singing. Sounding good so far.
