Disney's Frozen - Part 2

and that's pretty impressive. considering that DM2 was a sequel and the marketing for that was like......everywhere!!

I recall seeing more DM2 promos than I did Frozen ones, especially in more "mainstream" outlets.

Here's a couple of charts comparing Frozen and Despicable Me 2. Pretty much shows how inevitable it is that Frozen will blow past DM2.

First one shows how much they both made after the same number of days into their run. Second one shows the difference in millions of $ between them on the same number of days into their runs. Frozen is clearly gaining more and more every day now.

Well, DM2 is a sequel to DM while Frozen is an original animated movie without a sequel. That's what makes them different. Frozen's well written plot is what attracts the audience to watch it and that may explain why it's doing so well at the box office.

and because Elsa's so hot!! :o:hubba

oh......because Elsa can be seen as a metaphorical representation of being gay??

yeah.....I guess that's true...........

Well, that too, but even without that, I think it's a bad idea for Disney to promote something about love during an event in Russia where Putin recently said he wanted to cleanse Russia of gay people. Talks of cleansing a country of a minority, any minority, and Disney don't fit together that well. That and the actual actions going on there.

I don't have last weekends numbers but as of Jan. 19

8. Frozen 596,147 - 32,713,580

I think it might be ending its run there this week, or only in a handful of theaters.

Don't know if it has been mentioned, but Frozen has officially become the #1 original (non-sequel) animated film of all time.
Well is that adjusted for inflation?

If Disney was going to tie Frozen in with the Olympics officially, as in actually doing promotion in Russia, they would have made the deal months, if not years ago.

However, they might advertise the movie heavily during the broadcasts, with specially tailored commercials. Dreamworks did this for How To Train Your Dragon in 2010.

Maybe it's just me but I saw Elsa as being more a representation of an artist.

I can see that, too.

one blogger I read said she's very much like a conductor.

I'd say she's also like an architect ( she does have a love of geometry ).

and that's what's great about the character. she appeals to a wide range of people and they can relate to her on different levels.

she can appeal to shy introverts ( like me ).

or maybe someone with a visionary idea.

or a hidden talent.

I still don't understand how anyone could interpret the relationship between Anna and Elsa as anything other than the love of siblings.

To me it's more like she's someone who's got this desire to create but has been suppressed from doing do so, you watch that music clip and the shear joy she has as she's simultaneously creating and running up those stairs just brings a smile to my face. I know a girl in real life who's kinda like that, she's got this creative talent but had never really been encouraged to express it because her family aren't the creative kind. As a result she's always felt like the black sheep of the family. I've been trying to encourage her to see Frozen because I think she could relate very well with Elsa.

I think it's more about Elsa's situation being a metaphor for sexuality and coming out of the closet ( Let it Go ). I can certainly understand how people can see Elsa as that metaphor.

not saying Elsa has those desires for Anna. Although, apparently, there are people out there who want to ship Elsa and Anna together.......ewww.........

Bingo!!

Idina herself said she was in a similar situation with her singing and how she was afraid to let people know.

Elsa represents a much broader metaphor than just sexuality.

That's very true, whilst you can look at it from a sexuality perspective I do think it's too much of a default metaphor any-time there's a story about someone just being themselves or embracing an ability they might have.

agree.

but I don't begrudge anyone from seeing the sexuality metaphor. it crossed my mind, too. so it's certainly not a stretch in this situation.

equating Elsa to Satan.............now that's a stretch...............enough to make you go.............WHAT??!!

No, no, that's clearly what it was. Because when you think Satan, you think of a lonely person who spends all their time in their bedroom to avoid hurting people and ends up running away to be themself while not hurting anyone. Clearly this is the epitome of all that is dark and evil. :o

Personally, I feel it's the best kind of theme/metaphor: one that works on multiple levels. When watching the film, I see the broader being yourself theme one as more of a surface layer and it works perfectly fine. However, I feel that beyond that the LGBT one (not just sexuality) works better. As jmc said, it can often times be a default go to when it's a film about being yourself and I agree in some cases. But, in this case, I felt the film had so much that leaned it towards that specifically that I can't read it any other way.

I found the Korean and Mandarin Chinese versions of Let It Go, enjoy!

Russia was a bit slow reporting, but the weekend ending Jan.26 numbers finally came out.

9) Frozen - 364 736(32 938 784)

#1 was I' Frankenstein

1) I,Frankenstein - 6 336 631

Foreign markets are slow to report sometimes. Some interesting numbers.

Frozen still number 1 in Venezuela in its 6th weekend
#2 in Australia in its 5th weekend.

The film is going to do gangbusters when it hits home video. Not just families buying it, but a broader demographic.
