crap!! I really can't stop listening to Defying Gravity!!

did they ever do a film version of Wicked?? just curious........

No. But if you like Wicked, I would highly recommend The Phantom of the Opera musical. And there is a film version of that (unfortunately). But at least Emmy Rossum is very good in it.

Haha, welcome to the Broadway fandom circa 2003. That song (along Kristin Chenoweth's signature one, "Popular") was a pretty big deal when that musical first came out. :woot:

As for the Wicked movie, it won't happen until the Broadway show's popularity begins to wane. Just like what happened with Rent. Sadly, it almost certainly won't star the original Broadway cast because they'll be way too old.

Since Idina is under heavy green makeup as Elphaba, I don't think age is a problem if they cast her in the movie adaptation of the musical. However, they will have to recast Kristin Chenoweth since she won't be behind layers of makeup; they'll find someone younger to play like they did for Mimi in the Rent movie.

Both Emmy Rossum (as Christine) and Patrick Wilson (as Raoul) were terrific in their respective roles. But the most important role of Phantom was sung terribly by Gerald Butler (who later did movies like 300). I still can't fathom why Andrew Lloyd Webber would cast Butler for this pivotal part, and imo he dragged the movie down.

Oh, I love Phantom! :woot:

If I remember correctly ( cuz it seems like ages ago ), that was my 1st Broadway show that I saw. I think I was 9 at the time. it was so sad. :waa:

I actually liked the movie version better than the Broadway.......maybe, perhaps.

and I actually liked Butler as the Phantom........maybe, perhaps.

don't flame me........lol

I won't flame. I'm sure you've been corrected many, many times about how mediocre Butler's vocals are. :oldrazz:

I liked Emmy Rossum a lot as Christine, and Patrick Wilson was also good. But beyond Butler's vocal limitations, Schumaucher sexed it up so much that it lost the horror element and some of the overbearing since of nostalgic loss. Just my opinion. ;)

With that said, yes in whatever form, it is still incredibly sad.

He and Schumaucher wanted to sell sex, Butler had it for female fans in spades. But yes, objectifying him to such a large degree made him less horrific and slightly less tragic. Glam-ing everything else to reflect that heightened romance, which was always there but in more pitiful and hopeless way, actually backfires. Instead of feeling like a tale of loss, it feels very soapy and melodramatic.

But yes, Rossum and Wilson are terrific in it.

idk....for me........I was so used to listening to the Broadway soundtrack.

when I 1st listened to the movie Phantom soundtrack, I was taken aback by how "off" Butler's singing was as the Phantom. like it was very rough. very jarring.

but, the more I listened to it, the more I actually liked that "rawness."

for me, at least, I felt it more; it wasn't perfect but it conveyed more emotion in the singing than the more "technically perfect" prettier Broadway version.

but that's just me.........

Honestly, Crawford and Brightman aren't my favorites either (I actually prefer Rossum to the technically superior Brightman). This is unfortunate, as those are the two main versions professionally recorded and remastered that are readily available. But the several times I saw Phantom on stage, I saw it with actors who brought more than the original performers, while did not sound like their voice was cracking on high notes that were lowered multiple octaves for them.

I hope you're not suggesting that Gerald Butler's singing is superior than Michael Crawford's. :o

I have seen POTO three times in the theatre, and one of them had a Phantom who was even better than Crawford. I don't dispute that Butler has a rawness in his vocal, but aside from technical skills (which he lacks), he also could not convey the emotions that Crawford could effortlessly. His performance to me was akin to having a raging bull in a china shop, and he ruined many good songs from the musical.

Anyway, back to Frozen. Does anyone plan to go to the Sing-Along this weekend?

I'm not going to the Sing-Along.......

but I did see an ad for it on TV.......and it was Elsa focused!! :woot:

From Fandango. I love how they list Frozen twice.

FandangoTop 5

1. Frozen Sing-Along - Must Go!
2. Ride Along - Go
3. Frozen (2013) - Must Go!
4. Lone Survivor - Must Go!
5. The Nut Job - Go

I just have to laugh at this. I was checking the Frozen news from foreign markets, when I saw this picture. Apparently a publication in China used this fan art of Elsa and Jack Frost as a real picture from the movie Frozen. Check it out:

I can just imagine moviegoers' confusion when they realize that this movie does not have Jack Frost.

:funny:

talk about "false" advertising.......lol.

reminds me of Thor 2. I believe it was a poster here on the Hype who made some fan art/manip with Thor and Loki in a romantic pose. But somehow, again, that fan art made its way into a Chinese theater as an official poster!

I believe it was this one:

I got DM2 for my kids and I've watched it several times, and while it's a servicable movie (especially if you love those Minions), it isn't as good as the first movie and overall quite forgettable. You can just tell that the people behind that movie knew the moviegoers will flock to see it regardless, so the whole movie felt like phone-in. I'm glad that Frozen will be able to beat DM2's domestic gross, and probably the WW figure too once it opens in China and Japan.

Btw, I just read an article about an advance screening in the providence of Guangzhou in China (Frozen will be released over there on 2/5), and the reported response from the audience is overwhelming positive. Not surprisingly, the children in the audience love Olaf the most. Judging from the report, I think Frozen will do amazing business in China when it premieres there next week.

and that's why, as much as I'd like Tangled and Frozen sequels, I'm generally wary of sequels to these animated feature films.

and speaking of popularity, I wonder if we'll ever be able to know which sister is more popular in terms of merchandising.

Probably the sister in your avatar. :cwink:

and the sister in your avatar, too. :cwink:

Nice Photoshopping of the Olsen twins into Anna and Elsa, but one of the girls has too much eye shadow on her face so it made Anna seems a bit goth:

lol

no.......just........no.

Olsen twins should stay far away from my Elsa and Anna.

It's no contest, Elsa is the favorite and front and center in virtually all advertising. She's tragic and sympathetic at the same time, and her transformation in Let It Go makes her the beautiful princess (ok, she's actually a Queen by then).

Personally, I'm a bigger Anna fan. Spunky, fearless, determined and sweet. She makes her own decisions and follows through to the end. Also, I have a weakness for redheads, although Disney lists Anna as strawberry blond (way more strawberry than blond to me though).
