Disney's live-action "Mulan"

Don't really have huge expectations other than 'I'll Make A Man Out of You' being in it somewhere. I don't care how, but it better be in there, damn it.

They need to feature a random construction worker, Indian chief and biker guy in that number.

Harry shum definitely has the right star power to carry a film like this. He would be a very solid choice

Zhang Ziyi as the live action Mulan, I like this pick I like it a whole lot

Zhang Ziyi is almost 40.

I hope this will be as good as 2015's Cinderella. I loved that movie.

Pretty much any young, thin woman can pass herself as a young man without makeup and hair, seriously.

a pipsqueak of a young man maybe, but this is Mulan and movies are visual storytelling. im not saying go find a sumo, but at least hire an actress that can at minimum look like she can keep up with bootcamp.

also about the beloved SHIELD actors-- i love Chloe Bennet to bits, but she's the primary example of cute Asian girl who even with a shaved head wont pass for a guy once she starts moving and talking :woot: Ming Na 20 years ago on the other hand, now thats something else. see the difference? screen presence matters a lot.

I would think that film should be held up as the new gold standard for these live-action Disney remakes. Kept it faithful to the original while tweaking just enough to update the characters for today's audiences (which will be even less necessary for Mulan than Cinderella), and made with exquisite craftsmanship, from the music to the production design and of course the costumes.

No more of that "re-imagining" crap we got from Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent (though I know that film has its fans and will remain the most financially successful of the bunch for now). Tell it straight, and respect that the core story is strong enough to resonate with any generation, as long as it's executed with care.

I totally agree and I hope they'll accurately cast everyone and not change up the story too much...I'd also like them to emphasize the ancient Chinese epic aspect and have some good battle scenes as well.

Mulan's a better choice for a live-action version than Dumbo, at the very least :whatever:

Until March 2017. :oldrazz:

Let's hope. I was really rooting for Cinderella to beat it, but with BatB's cast (and music!), it's got a better shot for sure.

I'd say the only thing preventing it is kids not being home from school yet.

Depends on what the "reimagining" is. For example, although I do like Branagh's film, I like Ever After (then again I've never really been a big fan of Cinderella, so making changes to it don't really bother me).

What I liked about Cinderella is that they didn't try to reimagine it in any way. And outside of them sticking to the musical roots or the show/original movie, they don't seem to be reimagining BatB either.

To be fair, the 1991 Disney musical was itself a re-imagining of the original fairy tale.

All of Disney's movies are. And I like BaTB better anyway, so I probably be more ok with a straight-up take on that than with Cinderella. Same with Mulan, or Hell Frozen when they inevitably get to it.

I wonder who's directing this? I think maleficent would have been much better if they got someone with more experience and not just special effects experience. That movie looked amazing but I'm not sure it was told as well as it could have been.

On the other hand cinderella was both beautiful and incredibly well crafted.

I would actually recommend a Chinese director doing it. I mean Chinese-Chinese, not a Chinese from America or England or wherever the ****.

Why should that matter?

Steve McQueen is an black English film director but directed 12 Years A Slave about black American slavery. It doesn't matter as long as the director can bring their own passion to the project.

All that matters is that they don't whitewash the cast.

Sometimes you need the experience, sometimes you need to be detached. It varies.

I'm sure terry just meant it would be nice to see some diversity behind the camera as well as in front of it. Plus a chinese perspective might give an interesting new dimension to Mulan that otherwise wouldn't be there for beauty and the beast and the others
