Disney's live-action "Mulan"

To be fair, it's been a good long time since I've watched it, but I just remember really missing Menken on that one. Goldsmith's score was good though.

His score elevated the movie more than the songs did. If the composer for the new movie used some of his thematic material, that would be much better than retaining the musical numbers.

It would honestly not surprise me at all if this wasn't a musical.

It'll be a full on historical action film/period piece sort of thing. More Cinderella than jungle book

A very early draft of Mulan has this:

"The man is a 30-something European trader who initially cares only for the pleasure of women and money. The only reason why he and his entourage decide to help the Chinese Imperial Army is because he sets eyes on Mulan. That's right. Our white savior has come to the aid of Ancient China due to a classic case of Yellow Fever. In this script written by Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin, more than half of its pages are dedicated to this merchant who develops a mutual attraction with Mulan and fights to protect her in the ensuing battles. To top it all off, this man gets the honor of defeating the primary enemy of China, not Mulan."

I really hope Mulan is next. I just feel that that whole idea of a woman being able to do something just as good as a man would really resonate with people today.

yea i read about that this morning. sounds so ridiculously stupid. it's gotta be a joke, right?

I pray it's a joke or a script they originally passed on. Disney would not be that stupid to place a white male in the center of a story he was never in in the first place. What a slap in the face.

I know there's that spec script summary out there. Personally hate what I'm hearing. BUT keep in mind it isn't uncommon for studios to purchase scripts that could compete with their own project so that they don't make it to marketplace. It is possible Disney acquired that spec so that there isn't another Mulan film. It's under handed, but it is a very common practice.

yea the script created an all new male + caucasian character that steals my girl Mulan's thunder.
come on now, that ain't right.

this is a classic Chinese tale yo. gtfo of here with this ass backwards crap Disney.

I hope that script was passed over and that that isn't what Disney has planned for this movie. The feminists would riot.

From the way Disney is going, it should be obvious to everyone that that isn't the script for their Mulan. Disney is more female oriented and feminism based now more than ever with the exception of Marvel and Pixar. They're going to look to cash in on that good will with 'Mulan' - not destroy it in one full swoop.

Marvel and pixar too. They just had inside out and finding dory and marvels got captain marvel in the works as well as Jessica J.

They likely acquired the script with the means of eliminating competition. I'm pretty sure Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver are doing a page one rewrite of that script to align it more with the Chinese fable and the 1998 animated film. So no white savior... hopefully.

Exactly. As said, it's a common practice. Underhanded, but common.

ok, that makes sense.

china did make a live action of mulan back in 2009.
reviews for it were ok or mixed.

Yeah I'm positive that's what happened but the idea that someone still thought that having a white savior love interest in Mulan of all stories is just mind boggling. I wonder when the draft was written?

Disney can avoid this problem entirely by simply casting Scarlett Johannsen as Mulan. :o

If Jaffa & Silver use enough of the earlier drafts, the two writers can be eligible for story credit on the final film. Not only screen credit, but entitled to WGA residuals too.

And hey, the two ladies likely got a nice payout from Disney for their script, so, either way, they got compensated.

A source, however, tells V.F. that the spec script will not serve as the official script for the adaptation. “The spec script was a jumping-off point for a new take on the story that draws from both the literary ballad of Mulan and Disney’s 1998 animated film,” the source said. “Mulan is and will always be the lead character in the story, and all primary roles, including the love interest, are Chinese.”

That would be a horrible idea. Not only does it go against the whole point of the story. Not only does it reduced to cool fun female lead to a secondary LI in what's supposed to be her own story. Not only is it creepy "30-something White character romancing teenage Chinese girl because, Asian's be sexy I guess." Not only where there no white traders in Han Dynasty China. BUT, it also cuts Li Shang out of the story, and he was a fun and cool character in his own right.

I'm REALLY hoping that this is just a rejecting early script idea or something.

Did you not read the post above yours?:oldrazz:

Yeah, but that's yet another "unnamed source." And given Hollywood's rather dismal track record on this matter, I'm taking a "wait and see" approach right now.

people are making a fuss over nothing, there's no point in even doing mulan if everybody isn't asian. People should be more worried how china could react if they go with an asian actress who isn't chinese. Imagine if disney cast a Tibetan as mulan.

I prefer Emma Stone. :o

Nah Scar-Jo is a box office draw. Its one of the excuses some are making for her up coming film coming out in March next year.

So let me get this straight... someone wrote a script for a Mulan movie in which a white man is the main protagonist, while the titular character is relegated to the role of love interest... sorry, I meant teenage love interest. And not only that, but apparently he's the one who actually saves the day?

Welp, there goes any last shred of respect I had left for the human race. :o
