Action-Adventure Disney's Zorro and the New World Zorro

Yeah, I saw it when I was 11 or something:) it was pretty good. My grandfather taped it for me when it was on tv, but the sound was gone for some reason. Probably the first "silent" movie I saw:hehe: (and the first version of The Mark of Zorro I saw).

Hope it will be released on DVD some day.

I burned it to DVD myself...that will do until they do a studio release.

Write a letter to your president!

I remember that Frank Langella looked a bit weird in the mask.

I remember that Frank Langella looked a bit weird in the mask.

I thought he generally looked fine, but if you check his movies, he has a funny little thing with his eyes, they don't set still, but move back and forth a lot...I think the mask during closeups made it more noticeable.

I haven't noticed, but I tried to find some clips of it. I found this instead:

Frank Langella has nystagmus, a condition which causes a person's eyes to move involuntarily.

Any fans of Disney's Zorro, and/or the New World version?:yay:

Big fanatic, (sorry I missed this thread earlier) I love several incarnations of Zorro, like many Guy Armando Catalano Williams probably being the most definitive version for me too. Fairbanks defined the live action character though, and although a bit of a revisionist version I really like Zorro's Fighting Legion.
I have to admit, other than a few scenes I have yet to watch the New World version. So that's something to look forward to.

Guy...

I hope we'll get a new show soon. A Zorro in the same style as the classic versions, a show that's for everyone.
Beware - my sword is a flame - To right every wrong - So heed well my name - Zorro

Yeah hope there's something new on the horizon. A couple of movies speculated, one Fox, the other SONY but probably both in production hell - http://forums.superherohype.com/showthread.php?t=368369

Something tells me if Disney's Lone Ranger had been more of a hit, one or both of those potential Zorro movies would have been fast-tracked into production.

A new ongoing TV series, or Animated series would be great too.

Awesome photo, may I use that as my avy?

Sure, here's another.... Guy Armando Catalano Williams was the best!

Also I really liked the way Disney did the mask, down to the tip of his nose.

Magnificent action shot - Disney's Zorro and Tornado ...

If I could get enough post counts, I'd have this as my avy -

Thanks so much,I need to get to my photobucket lol

I watched the Guy Williams Zorro as a kid and loved it, but only got to see a few episodes of Regehr's show when it originally ran, so can't compare the two at the this time. But I recently picked up the entire Run of the New World Zorro at a store that sells used DVDs, so I will be trying to get them watched soon.

**a side note....slightly related to these series**
I collect all types of movie and TV related memoralbilia, and I have some things Zorro related. Back when the first Antonio Banderas Zorro movie came out, they released a series of collectable movie related trading cards. As part of the set, they did several cards about other Zorros.....and one was of Henry Darrow as Zorro from the short run TV series ZORRO AND SON Zorro and Son (TV Series 1983– ) - IMDb Darrow later played Zorro's dad in the Regehr series. I got a chance to meet him a few years ago and took the card to be signed....so far that is the only piece of Zorro stuff I have signed.
That is awesome, I didn't know Henry Darrow had revisited the character so many times, as Goshdarn Batman points out bellow , I also knew him as primarily the voice of Zorro in the Filmation series -

Cool, how was he?:woot:
Darrow also voiced Zorro in The New Adventures of Zorro. I have the dvd, but haven't watched it yet.
The Filmation Zorro is great, although a product of it's time, very limited animation, slow paced, repeat use of stock animation, but genuinely good stories, true to the character and a lot of fun. Filmation's heroes Zorro, Tarzan, Lone Ranger, Flash Gordon were heads above allot of the Saturday Morning dreck that was being put out back then.

It borrows some from the Disney version but puts it's own spin on it, and adds a strange sidekick called Amigo.
My favorite part is a recurring antagonist and potential romance character Lucia the Pirate, she's great I could watch a whole show just about her and Zorro on long sea voyage adventures.

There was also the reverse anti-Zorro or Phantom Zorro, all in white, I won't spoil it.

WB revisited the character in their 90s Animated Zorro....

I'm pretty sure it's rooted in one of the old pulp McCulley stories.

And he replaced Efrem Zimbalist Jr as Zorro's father in The New World Zorro. And as you all know, Zimbalist voiced Alfred in BTAS:word:
Yet another weird connection as Adam West of Batman fame apparently played his own characters great great grandfather of sorts, in the character Dr. Wayne. Who is inspired by Zorro's methods and his lair, implication being he'll pass down the knowledge to his descendant....(ie - himself as Batman)

Darrow was very friendly and nice. It was at a convention for western actors....when I pulled out Zorro and Star Trek stuff he laughed and said "Well, well....this one really knows who I am." and did that giant smile he has.
Oh yeah, I am a western fan (and an old guy....I'm 56). High Chaparral was a good series. He had pics of him from the show, so I got one of those, the Zorro card, a card from Star Trek Voyager where he played Chakotay's father, and a card from where he was an admiral in STTNG signed.

LOL that's so great. I had no idea, I can't believe he was Chakotay's father.
Good!:yay::up:

Another thing I love about this show...the christmas specials!:woot: It's A Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street, only with Zorro.
Man I really have to watch this show.

Welcome to the thread:woot:

A Zorro movie by Fox? Funny...:hehe:I actually hope they make "Zorro Reborn". I prefer the classic Zorro in old California, but if they want to modernize it, he would work better in a post-apocalyptic future than 2014.

Read something about a modern day Zorro series called "Z". But that was back in 2012, nothing new...I also believe a french or italian company is making a computer animated series about Zorro as a kid.

I love that scene so much! I always look forward to it :hehe:

Sounds interesting, must watch it very soon. I also have some of the WB episodes on DVD. Don't know if they have released the entire series.

The pulp stories are hard to get a hold of. I have the first "masters edition" collection, but the second one is extremely expensive. I know that the second Zorro story called "Further Adventures of Zorro" is edited into a story called "Zorro and the Pirate Raiders".

I don't know why Zorro stories should be so hard to get...the character is still very popular and well-known.

Yeah, pretty cool that Batman and Zorro is together:woot:

Man I really have to watch this show.

You really should. There are so many cool episodes of it. One of my favorites is when Zorro travels to France and meets descendants of The Three Musketeers:)

So glad Zorro is not a forgotten hero and it's always nice when more Zorro fanatic comes fourth lol

If you don't like Zorro, you don't have soul...:woot:

I don't trust people who don't like pizza either. There's something disturbing about that..:csad:

Thanks!

Yeah, Chronicles of Zorro a cg take on the character, not sure if that's in production or done? Or how/if we will get access to it here?
Looks a bit clunky, but charming.

Love the Chumash inspired cave art in the Lair, Allende developed this aspect in her novel. If this follows an origin tale it should form part of his vision quest. Maybe even have a black fox symbol somewhere he uses to channel his totem animal before he rides.

Personally I prefer a more mustachioed Zorro,
even for a younger version....

I don't know if it's Zorro productions Inc. the rights holders, who are responsible, but while cashing in on licensing the property to almost anyone, they have done an incredibly lousy job of actually keeping the original MCulley early pulp material in print. Short of tracking down the original Argosy magazines, the early stuff particularly "Further Adventures..." as you say is next to impossible to find.

Yeah, pretty cool that Batman and Zorro is together...

Of course Zorro teaches them a thing or two about sword fighting right? :oldrazz:
Kidding! Have to give it up to Dumas; Musketeers , Man in the Iron Mask, Monte Cristo, etc. he pretty much defined the heroic adventure swashbuckler genre on paper, and the hero who re-invents himself and secretly comes back to reek vengeance on those who would abuse their power.
I think both Zorro's daddies McCulley and Fairbanks were clearly inspired and huge fans.

So apparently the Marvel comic Zorro series coincided with the New World Zorro TV show. Anyone know if it's an adaptation of that series?
Also is it any good? Recommended?
I doubt it's been collected, are the individual issues worth tracking down?

Any Zorro - Wolverine x-overs?

LOL! Pretty much posting about Zorro since I joined:woot:, but yeah it's nice Zorro is not forgotten here! One of the original pulps and proto-superhero, glad to be part of the legion. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PL1A6A0E4EB34EB0AC&v=GWAwldNU07s&feature=player_detailpage#t=544

I have no idea, I doubt it will even air in my country. But maybe it will be available on DVD later:yay:

Yeah, Zorro slot machines and credit cards...but not a single story other than The Mark of Zorro. That's pretty sad.

(Anyone remember the Zorro toys from the 90's? I had three of them: barbed wire Zorro, sword fighting Zorro and the one that threw daggers. I remember how unbelievably cool that was as a kid...he drew a knife from his back and threw it:wow:)

Of course Zorro teaches them a thing or two about sword fighting right? :oldrazz:

I don't remember:hehe:, but they do team up. Unfortunately, I have only read The Three Musketeers. But I really want to read The Count of Monte Cristo.

By the way, have you ever seen "The Scarlet Pimpernel" from 1982, with Anthony Andrews, Jane Seymour and Ian McKellen? If not, I highly recommend it...one of my favorite movies. It's the only version of the Scarlet Pimpernel I have seen, but it's considered one of the best adaptations by some.

Any Zorro - Wolverine x-overs?

It's an adaptation:yay: haven't read all of them, but the ones I've read were direct adaptations of the episodes.

Zorro and Wolverine:hehe:

There's a Zorro vs Dracula story, but it's not from Marvel.

I've read a few of them but never noticed it was tied to the show,I've mostly read the other comics and novels

That is amazing. I really really like the implication.

Have any of you guys seen the novela, Zorro La Espada Y La Rosa (The Sword and The Rose)? It was a mini-series soap opera, and I use mini-series loosely because it was 112 episodes running at about 40 mins or so each. It was all spanish speaking, but there were english subtitles available. It was an interesting blend of the Banderas style and the Isabel Allende novel. I don't think it's available on dvd, but I do believe they can be found on youtube. If you can get past the soap opera tropes, and spanish soap tropes at that, I think Zorro fans can get into it.

Hmm, I've checked a couple times and could never find a dvd release for it. I'll check through those, though. And, I loved Disney's Zorro. Guy Williams was the absolute embodiment of Diego de la Vega and Zorro.

I've never checked out New World, though.

That's a lot of fish..I mean episodes:yay: I've heard about it, but never seen it before. They didn't show it over here, and I can't find it on DVD.

Ron Perlman is Zorro.

I've never checked out New World, though.

You must! You must become one of us!:argh:

I grew up watching reruns of Disney's Zorro on The Disney Channel. I don't remember 100%, but I think they were colourized. Although I remember watching B&W versions as well. Maybe they showed both?

I was in high school when New World Zorro was on TV (here in Canada it was shown on YTV). Not only did it have a great cast and excellent writing, it had some awesome guest stars. As a wrestling fan, two of my favorite episodes starred Rowdy Roddy Piper and Andre The Giant, respectively.

As for which one I prefer, I think Guy Williams was the definitive Zorro, and I thought Sgt Garcia was a much better bumbling sidekick to the Comandante than Sgt Mendosa was to the Alcalde. However, New World had better production values. So it's really a toss up.

I thought he generally looked fine, but if you check his movies, he has a funny little thing with his eyes, they don't set still, but move back and forth a lot...I think the mask during closeups made it more noticeable.

Yeah, they made good use of that when he played Dracula.
