Divergent

Kind of reminds me of the sorting houses from Hogwarts.

but instead it sorts you for society, not a school

Summit/LionsGate are going to have a huge Hunger Games issue. They are going to have to make this movie not look like a complete rip-off. I couldn't help thinking Hunger Games while watching the teaser. It's okay to be a rip-off but you have to sell the individual film's uniqueness. I didn't quite see that uniqueness in the teaser.

Also at issue is that not one YA Novel based film after The Hunger Games has hit it big. The Host and Beautiful Creatures bombed and The Mortal Instruments just had a terrible five day weekend. Warm Bodies did well but it wasn't supposed to start a franchise and it still only did 116mil worldwide.

That's the thing that's baffling is this and Hunger Games are from the same studio (despite being from a different label) It's possible that Summit got this as their 'Twilight' replacement prior to their merger with LionsGate.

who wants to see this movie? it looks 100% bland and mediocre. and after 16 years this is the blockbuster that Winslet signed on?

Doesn't look bad. Reminds me more of Equilibrium than Hunger Games.

Equilibrium had
-unique action scenes
-actors over 20 who looked like they knew what they are doing
-good and complex idea about the future.
-Sean Bean dying
-cute puppy scene.

its in no way close to equilibrium. Twilight looked more interesting.

:)

Have you read the book? If not, you're making a lot of assumptions based on a minute of footage. (I haven't read it either; just pointing out that I'm not going to make up my mind that this movie will suck after seeing a teaser.)

Anyway, how can you be certain of any of that, other than the age of the actors? How do you know Sean Bean didn't come on set for a day just to walk into a scene and get killed? How do you know that no puppies got slaughtered during the making of this picture?

These are questions yet to be answered.

I haven't read the book (don't care too) but this trailer presents it as a generic Hunger Games knock-off. There's nothing that screams awful or that wows me at all. Just rather ho-hum. Variations on "You don't fit in so you're bad" isn't compelling material. Maybe for the teenybopper audience that works.

But it doesn't even work for the YA crowd, if it did Beautiful Creatures (which is actually a pretty good movie), The Mortal Instruments and The Host would have been hits instead of flops.

I'm pretty sure Summit picked up the rights and were working on it before Lions Gate bought them out Octoberist. I think it was going to be their Twilight replacement/The Hunger Games-ish competition.

They did. They acquired the film rights almost a full year prior to the Lionsgate buyout.

i do have hope for this film i think neil burger is a very solid director and i like the cast here

I have hope for it as well for those very reasons, I just hope the full trailer is better/more interesting.

I'm actually surprised Lionsgate is keeping Summit Entertainment as a film label, after their Twilight series was finished.

But then marketing Divergent with the line "From the studio that brought you The Hunger Games" won't bring in moviegoers either.

so now days later i am reading at the comments and articles. and its very hard to find comments about Woodley how she is ugly. i can not find it. isnt she ugly and weird looking ? doesnt she have a fat chin on a 15 year old body? i thought it was true since spiderman fans said that she is to ugly for a blockbuster.

:)

I hated that nasty period. I'm not looking forward to Divergent and I haven't seen enough of Woodley's work to be a fan but that nastiness is more than enough reason for me to hope that the Divergent is huge.

i'm pulling for Woodley if for no other reason she's starring in The Fault in Our Stars, which was one of my favorite books I read last year. She even cut her hair for the part, evidenced by her short cut at the VMA's and she's started a big movement with people donating their hair.

Lionsgate says that if Divergent is a hit, the final book Insurgent will be made into two films.

*cue hugh sigh*

You can't handle the truth!

This does have a Hunger Games vibe to it but then the Hunger Games aren't exactly the first to do the segregated/districted society thing with a young upstart either.

I haven't read the book, know anything about the movie but I'll at least rent it on Netflix unless I see something that sells a theater viewing.

this must be old info? the third book, Allegiant just came out. maybe that will be the third film?

I just don't know. It looks nice visually but most movies with enough cash behind them do. I still keep thinking The Hunger Games in black leather. And I don't know about Woodley as a lead in an action adventure sci fi film, something about her ain't clicking during the trailer.

I didn't think that The Hunger Games trailer was amazing but it had two things that drew me to it. A snippet of Katniss when her character volunteers in place of her sister. It's just the way Lawrence convicingly played the desperation in that scene and it just came off to me as a selfless utterly heroic act. It intrigued me. The other thing is just Lawrence herself because I had become a fan of Winter's Bone.

Divergent looks like a decent sci fi flick but I don't see the heart of it or a particular scene that really interests me. Eh, I'll be waiting for reviews.
