Divergent

with Twilight no matter how much money it made you get it. you understand every creative choice. with HG you understand why the fanboys like it and you understand why everyone else likes it. you just get it.
we also understand why I AM Number 4 and Beautiful Creatures bombed.

how can anyone think that Divirgent looks interesting? the trailer looks 100% boring and lazy. just hoooow could they spend money on this? it makes noooo sense
 
I agree. I see this movie turning out like The Host, Mortal Instruments, and Beautiful Creatures.

Had no idea what was going on in the trailers.
 
To be fair, and I've said this before, it's a shame that Beautiful Creatures bombed because it was surprisingly…pretty good.

Golden Compass comes to mind. Althought the release date wasn't exactly set in stone the sequels were planned to come out in 2010 and 2011.
Also Mortal Intrustrments although they are moving forward with the sequel
 
I wish they did went ahead with the Golden Compass sequels. But that film led to the downfall of New Line.

I also felt bad for the lead girl.

I would've loved to see how they explored the world further.

Summit and Lions Gate are all under one roof now but Summit made this film. That should cause people to be leery because the Twilight films (eventhough I inexplicably enjoy them) are terrible films. If Lions Gate were behind it I think it would have a better shot of being a real film. To be fair they do have a decent enough director and cast but the script is going to be the most important thing.

No wonder it looks pathetic. I was thinking why would Lionsgate make something like this. But it was Summit.
 
I feel like this will be Ender's Game'd. There's no denying that they want this to be as successful as Hunger Games but if feels like they aren't willing to put in the effort, it's crucial to get someone who not only gets the books but knows what to compromise or add stuff but still getting the key to the story. Shame about all these actors.

Forbes thinks it means something that Divergent is the second most buzzed about 2014 movie on social media. I'm not sure it means that much. Sure I think the film is going to do way better than Beautiful Creatures and City of Bones box office wise but that still doesn't mean it's going to be the next Twilight (I'm not comparing this to The Hunger Games until I hear rumors and see reviews saying it's a real film and decent).

I really am trying to give Divergent a shot but I agree with you. When are the studio going to release something that makes the movie not look lame and unoriginal? That clip was a bad idea.
 
That final THG's T.V spot is amazing, I've never seen it before.

I don't hate romance in films like a lot of other people do and I'm not against them showing the romantic angle in Divergent, I just didn't like the clip and feel that it was a bad idea to release that as a first clip.

Exactly, as you said the scene was wrong as a first clip to promote the movie. As to emphasize romance in it.

And yes the tv spot was amazing, brings back the emotions and seeing what the character Katniss went through from beginning to end as she is being lifted up.

Hopefully they can do an awesome job for Mockingjay with trailers and tv spots.
 
trailer was with Hobbit.5 friends. i asked 5 friends what is this movie about. they didnt know.i watched all 3 trailers. and i am asking you now what is this movie about based on the trailers. do they really think that Twilight and Hunger Games made so much money with fans of the book? both movies broke records because who didnt read the book watched it.
and why is the main female character presented like she is weak and needs the help of a man in the trailer? isnt HG the movie that showed to the world that you can have a big franchise where the girl is saving the boy's life?

You can't expect Hollywood to change over night. It takes time for them to figure things out, then dump a whole lot of no longer relevant crap on us.

This is the case where the trailer NEED to spell out the plot to the general audience. Speaking only for myself, I get the plot, but will Joe Public? It might be a John Carter thing here.

We'll see. The director is talented and I like Woodley. I do think the clip released was only bad due to the music they used for that scene. In fact, it could've worked silently without the pop song.
 
Theres is absolutely nothing redeeming within that trailer, saw it in the theater again the other night and I heard a guy behind me say "haha that looks horrible" I turned around and just nodded my head in agreement.

Well it's not a good trailer. It's completely average at best in every way. And the fact that many are confused about the film's plot is problematic.

As dark b said, Twilight and THG had easily explained plots and so did Harry Potter. I know what Divergent is about because I read what it's storyline was but the trailer is really general and vague if you are a newcomer.
 
i had hopes for this with Woodley, Winslet, Judd and Q. i don't really like the way they are marketing this or promoting. the book gets a lot of buzz on tumblr and goodreads, so i may read it before i try to watch it, to even see if i'd be interested. it's been on my to-read list for a long time
 
I'm more getting flashbacks of everything I've seen for this first film looking awful.

I really doubt Goldsman will make a difference in a sequel, should there even be one.
 
Whocares who is re writing the sequel's screenplay, is Divergent any good? It's almost February, there should be some early word on this film's quality. Now that doesn't mean the early word will be correct but it would be nice to hear something. Is it another Hunger Games or Mortal Instruments?
 
From what I can tell on the boxoffice forums, Divergent should do ok, but not remotely close to Hunger Games numbers.
An opening weekend around 40m and 100-110m total.
Pretty much every single movie based on a young adult book since The Hunger Games has crashed and burned, but Divergent has slightly better source material to work from.
There seems to be interest, but I'm hearing more buzz from The Maze Runner.
 
I just finished reading this last week and it was a lot more interesting than I thought it'd be. It's very similar to Hunger Games in a way, but in most ways, it's really not. The political themes are a lot more interesting in the book as I read it and the factions and what they represent actual is very metaphorical to how people exist and what society and nature vs nuture expects from us. but maybe as a psych major i overanalyzed and drew these parallels on my own.

needless to say, i will be seeing this based on what i read
