Divergent

I'll probably check it out just to see what it looks like finished. I got to see a couple of action scenes filmed last year down town.

What's he looking at?

I'm tired of seeing ads or any kind of promotion for this film. Just burn and fizzle out already. :argh:

I was going to wait until Discount Tuesday to see this on the cheap, but I forgot there is a new Landmark Cinema relatively close and they have good matinee prices. They also have a special showing of Catching Fire for $2 that works out perfectly , so I can see both for a total of $10.

I did theatre hop into this for about two hours after seeing the Muppets after work. All I got out of it is that Shailene Woodley has a tight stomach and Zoe Kravitz is hot.

Zoe is hot. I had a crush on her mom as a kid. And because I liked Lisa Bonet, it was only logical for me to like Shannyn Sossamon, who had a similar look. Must be the eyes.

Maybe it was because I went in with low expectations, but it wasn't bad. It dragged a bit in the middle and there were several things from the book that were cut or glossed over, but still a decent movie. I did catch the $2 showing of Catching Fire, now that is how you do a truly great adaptation. Divergent was OK, but it looks really weak when comparing it to either of THG movies.

I can't see how this got a lower score than the first Twilight. Then again, after 5 years, and six movies, plus bombs like The Mortal Compass, I think critics got so disenchanted after the fact that I guess Divergent was an easy target.

However, I think Maze Runner looks good.

I read a synopsis of what's going on in the story. Man, what a convoluted setup! Was the book written after Hunger Games came out? Because it just seems to me like it's trying very hard to be The Hunger Games.

I guess Sony wont be regretting firing this chick with this bombing

was she fired ? i thought that this was just a rumor from fans who thought she was to ugly for MJ.

I still don't know where the ugly jabs came from. She's not insanely hot, but she's a cute chick.

The movie is okay. It's miles above any of the Twilight movies, although some of the supporting actors were sorely short-shifted (like Ashley Judd and Tony Goldwyn as Tris' parents) and even though Kate Winslet is a great actress -- Jeanine isn't a great villain for her to really sink her teeth into.

I don't think fans of the book will be disappointed. It establishes a good base for the two sequels to improve upon -- and it's very tonally different from Hunger Games. Tris is more of a trained fighter with a deadly throw -- and it's no question who she'll end up with at the end. I don't see why people compare Tris with Katniss -- other than they're ass-kicking female protagonists in dystopian worlds -- they don't have that much in common.

Lionsgate must be happy. From indie to basically mid major to major film studio. The Huger Games movies helped them get BIG. And this movie is doing well as well.

I hope they still do horror though.

My nephew and niece saw this film and said it wasn't anything special and since I think the storyline sounds stupid and nonsensical I'm waiting for DVD.

Still I'm always happy when a female led genre film succeeds at the box office. It's box office is more Snow White and the Huntsman than Twilight or Hunger Games but there is nothing wrong with that. I can't lie that friday box office number still feels disappointing because of the pointless overhyping of the film. Did a movie with a maybe 55 million opening weekend really deserve all the attention that it got? You can't will a movie into becoming a phenomenon media.

With all that hype and marketing, you bet Summit/Lionsgate was hoping for more than $55M+ opening weekend. With the price tag ($80M+), foreign b.o., then factor in the pre-sales taking the edge off the marketing spend... it's going to be a moneymaker for them.

Why else would they greenlight Insurgent following the numbers for the late/midnight shows? (Other than to save face, I wouldn't have greenlit it unless it did $10M+ or better for the late shows alone.)

Personally, another YA adaptation that looks good is The Maze Runner, which looks fantastic.
