A movie is what, 4 hours on the very long end. You can't compare.

Then there are television shows, which might be a bit easier to compare and I most certainly don't stick around if after four episodes I can't stand anyone.

Basically you are using the, "it gets better" defense which isn't even a good defense because it forces you to discount a large part of the content. How does the second half being marginally better change how bad the first part is?

I used a movie as an example because that relies more on story and character development than a game.

I'll use the InFAMOUS example again. I also didn't really like Cole, the protagonist, by the beginning of the game but, by the end of his journey, he felt like a true hero to me. I don't want you to think I'm going with the ''it gets better'' argument. What I'm trying to say is that I give the benefit of doubt. That it is fair. That people could do it more often. If I'm interested in a story, or in its characters, I'll judge after I learn about them properly.

Retro_Kid's comment sums it up perfectly.

Perhaps it was just me, but that intro paragraph and following second paragraph felt like one of the most self indulgent things I've ever read in a review. God, what's happened to Kotaku? If it's not the blatant sensationalism and view fishing then it's a question of credibility. I understand one is entitled to his own opinion, and to be perfectly honest I don't have a strong one about this game to begin with (meaning I don't care for, nor hate this game). However, reading through the review you totally forget to mention anything that that long time fans have been protesting like reduced framerate and a simplified combat system. Instead you choose to dismiss any and all criticisms in the second paragraph by making a laughably horrid strawman argument mean to represent the opinions of an entire fanbase, "fans of the older games grumbled loudly about how this take ruined everything".

The fact of the matter is, you chose to swiftly skate by all of the glaring issues and the objective flaws to focus on the purely subjective, so that this review and the positive score couldn't be criticized. Now, I'm not saying you can't base a review on the subjective, any and all reviews will eventually boil down to opinions, but it's the fact that there is no mention of the giant changes that have been bothering fans that are heavily prevalent throughout the whole game that leads me to question the credibility of this review.

Why? We're not insulting each other or anything like that, just sharing points of view.

No it hasn't headed to that point and I hope it doesn't. But I think he's not really listening to you and it'll be like this for longer then you intended to get your point across. I just hope after capcom's made some money they will consider to just finish up the older series and we can all move on from this.

Cole's character in inFamous is almost nonexistent. The karma system and how information and story is distributed is at fault for this. It was an attempt to recreate Bioshock in that regard and was a horrible misstep. There is no arc.

InFamous 2 is far better in that regard as even with the karma system, Cole still has a defined character thanks to a far better delivery of information, voice acting and animations. This is one of the reason I find the original InFamous nearly unplayable after the sequel came. The advances in gameplay also help.

I disagree. We really build the character as we progress and the karma system was an important part of that, since it was less black and white than in the second. It wasn't always easy to pick the right choice. In the second, they colored it blue or red, making it obvious which decision was what.

It wasn't as fun to make choices, but he was still developing as a hero (or anti-hero, villain, depending on how you played it).

This is a hilarious troll. Warning: Spoilers. I'm not sure how big of a spoiler it is though.

And yet they have a skin for DMC3 Dante in the game.

The first InFamous lives in grey as it has no directions and lives it character bland, almost non-exist. Because it walks a tightrope it can never go to far one way. No matter what you choose, it doesn't really matter because you end up at the same place, even though your character should be significantly different given your actions because of the choices in the game.

InFamous 2 is kind of like The Witcher 2, where you have moral and game changing choices, but they all fall into the framework of the character established in the game. The decisions and actions are built on the character, not simply a choice.

With the new Dante, it is clear he suppose to be a bad boy with a heart of gold.

The character is supposed to be built by the choices you make and, not only the choices affect Cole, but the people around him. His reactions are different based on the situation you put him and the choices you've made. You put yourself on the character's place, that's the cool thing about it. It's hard to decide, for example, if I should save a building with the doctos or the love of my life.

In the second game, they basically tell us ''this decision is good. That one is bad''. Blue is good. Red is bad. They were also able to dare more, since it was the end of the story. They didn't need to worry about the ramifications for a third game.

Dante is always Dante. Cole can be good Cole or evil Cole. Depends on you.

But there is no indication any of it actually matters because you end up in the same place. The saving Trish scene is a perfect example. Even if you personally apply all your ideas he is still a specter of a character. Cole as your avatar doesn't work and that is why they changed it in the second game.

In the second game, the decision making, good or bad, still align with the character of Cole. That is because they actually create the character of Cole and your choices simply supplement that.

The character of Cole is more defined in the second than in the first because they took the ''good'' ending as canon and began from that. It's in the first game that we define him. In the second game they can deviate ways in the ending, because there is nothing after that. It's the same as the first. All what must happen will happen, details change, but the path to the endings is basically the same.

His character in both and the changes around us is still tailored by how we play.

How they did it is irrelevant imo. Just that they did it. Also, that they had to pick an ending is the exact reason why the morality system was a not so great idea in the first place.

Anyway, this was fun. I have to go, but if you want to continue I will respond later.

Installing the HD collection. Can't wait to dive back into DMC1. ^_^

hmm I wanted to put that up back to back with both Gamer informers and EPD.tv/ ROTR's reviews. But there's no need to now. as long as they already have it up. then again I might be better off not putting GT's video Review up after seeing it.
Hehe admin C Lee will throw a fit. Nathan maybe just write the score from GT. It'll be less trouble.

In all honesty, despite the fact that I'm having fun with it, I thought the hair change 'joke' in the first chapter was pretty crap.

Also, I find it stupid that you can get the white hair as an unlockable... I mean, why not just make that the default hair in the first place if they had no problems putting it in the game?

Is there a DLC skin pack you can purchase out today? Or is it only rewarded after you complete the campaigns?

Wow, game currently sits at an 86 meta score. Guess its not the complete stinker the dumbass fanboys were hoping for. Headed out to snag a copy now.

haha I'm glad to hear that. I look forward to when I eventually get the chance to play. I always had confidence it would turn out okay despite Dante looking different

Maybe I'll eventually get this for PC, when there is another Steam sale. I'd prefer this with 60fps. But I tried the demo and I couldn't get myself to care enough to even finish it. So right now there's no hurry to get it.

From what Ive been reading I would say def get it on PC. Supposed to run smooth as hell. Ign had this to say...

When selecting a platform of choice for DmC: Devil May Cry, the PC version is the clear champion. It looks spectacular and annihilates its console counterparts in terms of performance. Not only does it hold at 60 frames per second, but during initial testing it actually hovered around 100 FPS.
