I hope this does not get closed. Lord knows we have enough Pirate threads in this world, but I mentioned this a week or two ago and have since seen the first Pirates movie again and have to mention this.

Rewatch the first Pirates movie. There is a sense of fun and joy in it that is arguable if the sequels captured. Was the ending worth it? Was it worth continuing on from the ending of the first to the conclusion that

Jack lost the Pearl, Norrington died after his great bow in the first, Governor Swann died and Will and Elizabeth are still together, but can only get it on every 10 years until she dies (or gets very old)

just for the extra cash....

?

This is a poll of course.

Quick - you need a / in your spoiler tag!

when a movie makes as much money as the black pearl did it becomes stupid not to make sequels, though they should have take their que from indiana jones and not LOTR when making them.

Yes indeedy. the sequels were both superfluous overblown money grabs. The first one was decent and that's where it should have stopped.

Not to say i didn't like/appreciate the sequels but they were by no means needed, but then again neither are any of the sequels coming out this year.

I like the sequels, but the first does well enough as a stand alone film.

EDIT

What I said had nothing to do with the thread. :O

I definitely wanted the Pirates sequels to be made but there were quite a few moments in AWE that bugged me. 2 & 3 don't have the feel of 1 at all.

I love all three, so I'm very glad they made DMC and AWE.

I feel the same way, which is why I still haven't watched the two sequels.

^ I'd agree with Iceman/Psylocke that they were missing the excitement and wonder of the childhood perception of Pirates and seemed to be trying too hard at being epic or serious. I jsut really hated the "resolution" for almost every character in AWE other than Barbossa. I think even newly introduced characters like Davy Jones and Calypso while great never were correctly paid off in their development. It all just seemed to be a Bruckheimer ocmmerical to me, really.

AWE is worth it just for the music in my opinion. Its score is right on par with COTBP's in my opinion. I also think that Bill Nighy's Davy Jones is a very cool character. I love his accent. One of my favorite scenes in any of the 3 Pirates films is in DMC where he says, "Let them taste the triple guns." I love the cocky swagger he has and the accent. DJ is a very cool villain in my opinon.

Black Pearl also had a reasonably straightforward plot. AWE was just a case of throwing everything into the melting pot without filtering out the ****.

The sequels were vastly inferior to the original, but I guess I won't go as far as saying they shouldn't have been made, but I would've wanted the sequels to be a hell of alot better than they actually were. The second was a terrible movie, and the third movie was an (almost) above average movie, but is still under the original.

Answering the poll question, were they worth it?

No, not really.
We did end up getting possibly the best CGI in all of cinema, so far, if that's a consolation.

where's the option for no if you thought the first one was awful ?

i thought after serving 10 years of being the cap of the flying dutchman, he could go back toliving normally and happily with elizabeth. never heard every 10 years.

They should have moved on pass Will and Elizabeth instead of turning it into some continuing saga. They are exactly were they were at the end of the first movie!

uh...no they arent...they arent even close to where they were...did you even f**king WATCH the movie???

they mention a million frickin times that Davy Jones can only go on land once every 10 years, and the Dutchman needs a captain, and Will doesnt have a heart anymore...so if he quit being the dutchmans captain, he would be dead, as he doesnt have a heart, and the mystical energies wouldnt keep him alive..plus the fact that the only way for him to quit would be if someone stabbed his heart...man, no wonder people didnt like these movies, it's like you werent even paying attention to them...

Well that ending as Joker describered, sucked. IMO. It was trying to go for moving or profound but these movies are originally supposed to be Erroyl Flynn-styled swashbuckling fun with the Indiana Jones sense of humor and Depp's self-deprecating performance.

It tried to become an epic LOTR meloncholy ending but it was too downbeat. It didn't work. Also, Jack losing the Pearl and the criminal misuse of Norringotn in the third installment was all disappointing.

Watch the end of COTBP and it is SOOOO satisfying. It jsut brings a smile to your face with uncharted adventure ahead and seeing him get the ship back and the way everyone gets a fina lbow (except Barbossa for obvious reasons) was gratifying. Did AWE capture that feeling? No. It was just meh. These sequels are more Matrix akin to me, really.

I enjoyed 2 but not 3, so I think they are not neccessary movies.
