Doctor Sleep

Probably because it was actually a great continuation of sorts that didn't give a giant middle finger to fans of the first movie or the novel, nor retreaded already stale ground.

Caught this last night. I thought this was great up until
the Overlook came back into play. It almost felt like I was watching a different movie, because up until then this movie was its own beast. Also, you can't replace Jack; although I felt the new Wendy did great.

Otherwise, the direction was phenomenal, as was the cast, especially Rebecca Ferguson.

I have to agree with you. There are great things about this movie. It is quite thrilling. But:

Once it get to the Overlook it then no longer stands on its own. It requires The Shining to resolve it. It then verges into cheesy territory, with the ghouls and ghosts. The homages to the original become too much. The idea of going to The Overlook was okay, and kind of makes sense- Danny's demons are still haunting him and they help him. Perhaps if it was introduced more organically, maybe introduced earlier as Dan revisits it while dealing with his alcoholism and trying to move on in life. Or used more sparingly.

I really liked Abra's battle of wills with Rose. It should've been used more in the end. I would've preferred less of Dan's monsters and more of Abra's mind powers against Rose to conclude the story.

Before all that, I dug a lot of the movie. Rose's group and their actions are truly disturbing. I liked Dan's friend who helps him, as well as Dan's scenes helping the dying. Dan was an interesting character. It's well-made and pretty much its own movie that wasn't relying too much on what came before it. It was good enough to be its own thing and should've stuck to that.

I still think it's one of the best movies I've seen lately. Just wish it was just a little bit better. But I want to see it again and will own it.

‘Doctor Sleep’ Wakes Up To $1.5M From Thursday Night Previews – Box Office – Deadline
1st Update: Warner Bros. The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep drew $1.5M last night from showtimes that began at 6PM.

2nd UPDATE: Wow, this wasn’t expected Roland Emmerich’s Midway is overperforming apt to beat Warner Bros. Doctor Sleep, $19.2M to $17.2M. Good for Midway, really bad for Doctor Sleep which cost in the $50Ms. $7M today for Midway, and $6.6M for Doctor Sleep. How bad were Doctor Sleep previews last night? So bad they included cash from the Oct. 30 screening.
Yikes...

That sucks since it's easily the better film. I saw them both in a Dolby double feature. Midway was fine but this one is so much more engrossing and so well written, acted and directed imo.

It deserves to do well. Midway sounds more the obvious and easier sell.

I really think Warner Bros did a bad job marketing this movie. It already had a crappy release date, but it always felt like they never had any real confidence in it either with those trailers which weren't exactly all that appealing to the mainstream horror crowd in the first place.

Maybe they should have pushed The Shinning connection harder?

I think there was a lot of marketing connecting it to The Shining. Maybe they should've pushed it more as its own thing, and highlighted the thriller/chase aspect.

Well, Midway's success is partially due to the fact this is Veterans Day weekend. so part of this outcome is fortuitous timing by a competing studio.

What real success though?

One has a budget of 100M.

The other 45M.

I suspect WB knew they couldn't appeal to the mainstream horror fans because Doctor Sleep isn't a mainstream horror film, the later marketing I did notice pushed the Shining and Stephen King name more than the first set of marketing but releasing a 2.5 hour Stephen King film not long after another fairly long Stephen King didn't help either.

I do think it'll find an audience when it's released on home entertainment.

This movie barely had buzz. I'm watching it tomorrow but I'm not surprised, that alot ofpeople are skipping the movie.

The budget isn’t too high so it could still leg out over the coming weeks. We’ll see.

How ‘Doctor Sleep’ Went Into A Coma At The B.O. With Dreary $12M+ Opening - Deadline
The big shock here this weekend is how Warner Bros, which goes toe-to-toe with Universal/Blumhouse when it comes to commanding the horror space at the B.O., was completely blindsided here by –we can say it– disastrous performance of its well-reviewed (73% fresh), well-received (B+ CinemaScore and 4 stars on Screen Engine/Comscore PostTrak, 60% definite recommend) Stephen King sequel Doctor Sleep, a mid $50M-ish production that was expected to come in north of $25M and is way short in No. 2 with, gulp, $12.6M.
I knew this would happen months ago when I heard
Henry Thomas was playing Jack.

And I would have agreed with you, had I been online. A de-aged Jack Nicholson returning as a redeemed Jack Torrance would have sold a few million more tickets, most definitely.

It does feel like a missed opportunity, especially when de-aged characters/actors are an increasingly common special effect.
