Does a "War Machine" movie even make sense?

I don't get how some people are just outright offended that they're even thinking about this. It's not like this is the only movie that Marvel can make. They're not sitting there thinking, "Man **** Namor, Moon Knight, Iron Fist, and some other favorite character of some kid on a message board. We gotta make War Machine our last ever movie dammit!"

Heh heh. Pretty much.

Ah, overreacting fanboys. Gotta love 'em tolerate 'em.

I really don't get the hate for a War Machine movie. I would think you would all be drooling for one.

A War Machine film would be a totally different breed of film from Iron Man. War Machine works for the military, he's not a hero, just a weapon. And there is a lot they can do with his story.

They can do a lot with the story of a guy who's just a weapon?

It seems like a waste to me because i feel there are other Marvel characters more 'deserving' of their own movies first.

But then again, Marvel have been thinking of doing this since back when Terrence Howard was playing Rhodey.

IMO they have started development on War Machine because they feel RDJ might jump ship post Avengers/IM 3 after Favreau's departure. Or it might be that RDJ will simply become too expensive once his current deal runs out. So this is a way to continue the franchise without Stark but with a cheaper star that people know.

To be honest, all this talk of a WM spin off, reminds me of when they were talking about a Venom spin off following the negitive response to SM3. In IM2 they packed WAY too many sub plots in the film to satisfy WM fans, so they want to make a WM movie to appeal to them.

I think they should seriously keep War Machine in a supporting role only. He never really held my interest that much in the comic books.

You're seriously suggesting there's enough to make a James Rhodes trilogy as intricate as the Bourne movies?

If all you took away was that he was just a weapon, then watch them again. The whole idea is that he isn't a weapon. Besides, if Bourne was War Machine, the movie would be over in ten minutes and be way less suspenseful.

No, I'm not suggesting that. That's just an example how they did manage to make a movie out of a character who was "just a weapon." War Machine would be nothing like the Bourne movies, of course.

Because Bourne is totally different and nothing close to just being a weapon.

That's why the comparison was odd.

I've always like James Rhodes as a character, so I won't dismiss this idea out of hand. I think it's a chance for the character to get further developed in the MCU.

As far as a potential storyline, I wouldn't be surprised if they riffed off of a storyline from War Machine's first solo series wherein he was trying to help a Nelson Mandela-type figure from a cruel dictator in the African country of Imaya. The UN and SHIELD knew what was going on but didn't help, so Rhodey barged in. Which makes since considering comic Rhodey is a little more gung-ho. But that storyline could allow the more order-taking soldier movie Rhodey some character growth, as he comes to see maybe there are times to be the "lone gunslinger" as he called Tony in IM2.

This would also allow them to connect it to Black Panther in someway, being set on the same continent.
best idea I read for this movie

Maybe if they tossed out everything about the character and made up a new storyline for him. Perhaps make it so he's a government spy and goes rogue and steals a top secret battle suit to save his family from terrorist or something.

A good writer can make an interesting story with any character. Rhodes is an interesting character with access to a heck of a piece of machinery. See no problem with there being a movie made about him.

So you'd put him ahead of other characters? It's not like Marvel is coming out with more than 2 maybe 3 movies a year. There are so many more characters much more intriguing and visually different to be done that I feel resources should be used on something fresh not on a character that looks extremely close to one we've been getting already.

Perhaps a War Machine movie could be a way to test the waters? Using a character that the audiences are already acquainted with to see if there's a decent market for a black superhero that isn't a vampire hunter or Will Smith? This could possibly lead to a Black Panther greenlight if Marvel is a bit hesitant. Not saying that studios are hesitant to use black heroes, but it could be possible, some studios don't want to make big-budget movies starring women either.

Why YES....YES....that's exactly what I said....I said in my post above "Screw all other characters in the Marvel universe and make only IronMan/WarMachine movies from now on through out eternity!!!"

Oh come on....really? How dare you use logic and common sense in here. That kind of useless thinking is what causes cancer and planter warts.

It's more than possible, it's the way it is...with the exception you already mentioned of Will "box office champ" Smith and maybe Denzel, studios aren't willing to put 100 million plus budgets into movies with black stars. Even some of Will's movies don't do well overseas, and studios really only care about the bottom line.

Your first sentence is why I don't really complain about a movie until after I've seen it. A lot of characters can really be interesting with the right pen behind them, so I give most movies with a premise I'm interested in a shot. War Machine would be a good premise because he's a decent character with some cool "powers." It's simply talk of a spinoff from a popular movie. There are far worse properties they could make, and even then they could pull a Blade and turn a boring character into a good one.

Why be a jerk?
