Ironically, to me, Henry Cavill looks oldet than Tom Welling...

A good thing, if you ask me, because unlike Welling, Cavill is playing Superman. Not Superboy.

Hahahahahaha!!!!! LOL. NO! He is a terrible actor that has never shown any versatility and was Blurperman for three years because he never wanted to wear the suit. He thought he was above the role. He never showed any commitment either. Why on Earth would anybody ever want him to be Superman? ESPECIALLY when compared to an actor that has had classical acting training like Henry Cavill and was not model who wandered into the role. Hell Brandon Routh was better than Welling. Routh may have been playing Chris Reeve playing Superman, but at least he goddamn played Superman.

Your post is waaaay off on many points.

First off, of course Routh played Superman - that's what he was hired to do. Tom Welling was hired to play Clark Kent. And if you had followed Smallville and didn't make sweeping generalisations about it, you would know that the shows producers and creators have always said that right up until the last shot of the show, it's about Clark Kent - not Superman. The story of Superman is an entirely separate one, and which has been told (and will be told) in plenty of other media. This was always about Clark's journey towards becoming Superman.

Stating that Tom Welling thought he was 'above the role' and 'never showed any commitment' is just bull***** to be honest. It has been stated by the producers of the show that Tom took a huge interest in the role right from day one, far above and beyond what he was required to do in his acting capacity - they even said that he used to wander into production meetings he wasn't meant to be at and sit at the back so he could learn and pick up things. And eventually they made him a full producer, such was his interest in the show as a whole - not just his own acting role. He even directed a few episodes. Not many actors get a chance to have a crucial role behind the scenes in the production of their show unless they have some producing skill and a big devotion to what they're doing.

According to many interviews with other cast members, between having the lead acting role and also being a producer, Welling put in many 16hr days over the last 10 yrs and barely had time for anything else asides from the show. If that's not commitment to you, I don't know what is.

As for his versatility and skills as an actor, that's always going to be a matter of opinion - as with any actor. Personally I don't think Tom's the best actor on the planet, but I also think he's far from the worst. And being lumbered with some of the Dawson's Creek style writing in the show didn't do him any favours. In the few episodes where he was let loose a bit and especially when he got to play Clark a little more uninhibited (e.g. under red K or the like), he really shone.

I'm personally glad to see Cavill in the MOS role, I look forward to seeing a new take and think he has what's needed for a big screen version. I also think Routh did an acceptable (if not amazing) job. I'm not knocking either of them. But I think Tom Welling deserves just a little kudos for playing Clark Kent longer than anyone else has and throwing himself into his work completely.

I agree. I think he was very dedicated, and obviously enjoyed playing Clark. It almost felt like he was very attached to him by the end.

But even at the very beginning I remember him saying he'd been reading the comics and watching tonnes of old Superman episodes in his hotel rooms, just trying to get into the right frame of mind.

I don't blame him for Smallville's faults.

I'm a little peeved at him for not wearing the suit tho, because I find it hard to believe that in the position he was in before the show ended, he didn't have any control over that.

I don't want him to play Superman in the new movie (MOS) but, Smallville producers really should have made one direct to DVD Smallville movie right after season 10 Finale and Tom Welling should have made an appearance as costumed Superman in that movie even if it was for 10 minutes, most fans would have appreciated it.

Now, they can't do that as all the Kent Farm sets, Fortress of Solitude sets and other sets are dismantled, and most of the other supporting actors are now looking for job elsewhere.

To answer the OP's question, I say no to Man of Steel. Though I wish Smallville had ended at Season 5 and started a series of Smallville movies with Tom as the Man of Steel. I think the ship sailed on that possibility a long, long time ago.

That would have worked. WB is stupid except for Batman GL MOS.

this is a huge no for me. I have been a Smallville fan since the beginning, but i'm also a movie director and understand movies.

Tom Welling, is just not the right Superman. Even in Smallville, sure he acted alright as Clark, but it was NOT the best Clark acting (and i don't mean the bubbly nerdy clark, i mean in general)

No. It's my opinion that he's never really looked the part, and I don't think he's that good of an actor. I have to believe the man can fly.

I agree that WB wasted an opportunity. Smallville was still pretty popular five years ago, it had a built in audience, and transitioning to Superman could've brought more fans or the curious. Plus, I wonder if doing a Smallville movie wouldn't have been cheaper to do. You already had the cast right there and for the most part I was impressed with Smallville was able to do effects wise on a TV budget.

Yeah.

Early Smallville seasons felt like the series would lead to a superman movie.

If MOS were to feel like a 2-hr teen-drama TV show with bad effects and you didn't need to see Clark in the super-suit....sure, why not?

:O ;)

No.

We've had 10 years of him playing a version of Clark Kent and then about 2 mins of a dissapointing attempt at consoling the fans in which he did not even wear the suit.

I'd like something new thanks.

This.

If the Smallville finale had ended in a better way (and I'm not going reiterate all of my previous criticism of the episode again as people can read it in one of those review threads) and Welling had actually appeared properly as Superman in the suit, then perhaps I might be prepared to give him a chance. The finale was so bad that it leaves a bitter taste in one's mouth and puts a dampener on the entire series as a whole. I know I'm not the only one who thinks that judging from the dozens of reviews I read at the time. I don't want anything further in the Smallville canon I have to say. Let sleeping dogs like, as they say. That last episode was a real dog.

Even if the continuity is different, you put Welling into the role and it doesn't matter because EVERYONE would associate the movie with his Smallville series. That's something you don't want to do, when you're trying to go in a new direction with Superman.

However, I wouldn't be against a DTDVD or made-for-TV Superman movie continuing where Smallville left off with Welling and the Smallville cast.
