Did he put it there becos he wanted to be known as superman, or was it put there on krypton?

I think they make a passing reference to it being his fathers' suit, and if you've seen Superman The Movie...the \S/ is the symbol of the House of El.

I guess he wears the emblem out of respect for his heritage, yeah.

It still doesn't explain why he wears his draws outside of his pants... or why he needs a belt for them.

He's an alien. they do weird stuff. *Shrugs*

It's all about the style.

His 'pants' are representative of his SKIN. You don't wear underwear under your skin.

As to the S, it's a Kryptonian symbol for the House of El. It's not an 'S' to them. Since it looks like an S to English-speaking humans, it's only natural to call him Superman. Though one has to wonder what he would have been called if his family crest had been something other than an S, like an F or a C.

FantasticMan? Cool Man?

They talk about it in the novelization if you want a clearer meaning as to what the "S" represents. Not sure if that will be included in the film, though.

The truth about the trunks is that Superman's (as well as other early superheroes like Batman) suit was modeled after the strong-man outfits of the early 20th century. So in essence, the superhero costumes would evoke that kind of power and strength. The problem is that we don't like breaking tradition, so it's very hard to update the suit to a trunk-less one without 1) backlash from fans, and 2) losing the nice color balance that the trunks provide.

I think it's funny that many modern wrestling costumes look like this too. I guess society just accepts that certain people (wrestlers, superheroes, gymnasts, etc) can get away with wearing goofy-looking get-ups without being goofy. :)

Well you try telling a big scary sweaty, muscled guy that he looks goofy with his underwear on the outside...we'll see how that goes for you  ;) :D

Because they would fall down without a belt?

The "S" is a winding serpent encased in a diamond shield (Think Zod and how his crew was imprisoned). It's a reminder to Krypton never go back to there old ways before they found peace.

Exactly, which then begs the question: Why do most folks "in the know" refer to Superman as Kal-El? Why not just Kal (this also applies to Jor-El)? No one calls him Clark Kent each time they see him. "Goin to get some coffee Clark Kent?" "Hey Clark Kent, what did you think of the game last night?" "What's up Clark Kent?" "Hey Clark Kent would you run this by the cleaners?"

Just an observation.

I would imagine that it's a Kryptonian thing, also though, it begs the question why didn't they call his mom Lara-El? Or even her maiden name, or do women not get last names on Krypton? But Supergirl did, didn't she?

So whay happened to Lara's 'El?'

Kara's last name is that of her father Zor-El...so here's my theory of Kryptonian naming (Based on sort of a Male Dominated society concept) Male inherit the house name like "El" and as is custom the "El" (or whathaveyou) would be included as part of the first name IE Jor-El/Kal-El/Zor-El. Women on the otherhand are not "allowed" a house...they have their first name (like Lara or Kara) and while they are unmarried they have thier father's name serve as tehir last name (like Kara Zor-El) so I would assume before marrying Jor-El, Lara was something like Lara Con-Ak (I'm just pulling that out of my butt) for her (hypothetical father) Con-Ak. Upon marrying they carry thier husband's name (Lara-El) but it's not permanently affixed to her name because the House is not "hers".

Long story short, the El is attached to the males names to show ownership of the House, while women on Krypton would not be allowed that.

Like I said, only a theory...any others??

sorry but your theory doesn't really hold water. lara's maiden name was lor-van or lorvan. and there is a female character from s:tm named von-dah. so i guess its just up to the people themselves. they go by what they want. its weird that lara calls her husband "jor-el" but no one ever calls her by her surname. maybe kryptonians are so advanced that it doesn't really matter.
