Does the music of this decade suck?

Kinda, usually there´s one or two good songs on the top 40. The rest is unbearable.

It really depends what genre you listen to.

EXACTLY! Thats what I tell everyone! Every genre has its ups and downs. One genre may suck now while another is doing awesome. And, the next decade will be vice versa.

So, people who complain about 2000s is probably cause their favorite genre is doing bad now. Luckly, I'm an open-minded person who listens to everything. While I'll admit that rock and rap aren't doing so good I think pop is awesome lately. No more boy bands! Thank God!

Every decade has its crappy bubblegum pop. When Madonna first came out, she was no different from Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson.

You know "Like a Virgin" was not Madonna's first song nor her first hit song. Madonna started with club music THEN she did pop.

Yeah, sounds about right... Don´t feel like dancing works as a seventies dance music kinda thing, Jump is actually the only single from Madonna´s new album so far that I can stand... The rest sounds like vomit. Smack That makes me feel like smacking... every single person who had anything to do with making it...

Don´t get me wrong, I love a retro thing when it´s well done... I hate pretty much every song I ever heard from Christina Aguillera but I can´t resist Candyman, the old big bands ruled!

I hate modern music because there's no real artisitc value in it. No real message, nothing provocative about it. There's no "Wow" factor to it. Pretty much every form of music today, be it rap, rock, or pop, follows the same formula: a catchy melody, harmless, inoffensive lyrics that really don't make sense or leave any lasting impression on the listener, and vocals and instruments clearly dressed up via technology to sound better than they really are. It feels very soulless and manufactured, because it essentially is.

That being said, we're not completely ****ed, only about 90 % or so. The Killers and The White Stripes are most excellent, John Mayer and Corinne Bailey Raye are excellent singer / songwriters (Mayer's a really great guitarist, too), Christina Aguilera, while I'm not the biggest fan of her music, has an amazing voice, and there are many underground bands that are making great music that are waiting too break out?

However, that's where the positives end. Otherwise, musically, this decade so far has been pretty much bankrupt.

And 70% of the music blows at any given time... The music from past decades seems better cuz the good ones stick with us. There´s a ton of crap from eighties and nineties nobody remembers anymore. I remember people complaining in those decades that there was nothing original and lyrics were meaningless too...

Meh, someone is always going to say something ten years ago was better than something now. Its all a matter of perspective. It really depends where you look and your style. And for the record, Franz Ferdinand is awesome.

For every two artist that suck, there will always be someone thats good.

It's funny. . . I don't even know who half the bands mentioned here are!

I guess I'm just getting old.

My CD collection consists of stuff like Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Carcass, Cannibal Corpse, and Pantera; my record collection has stuff like Racer X, Jimi Hendrix, Kiss, Ozzy Osbournbe, and Yngwie Malmsteen.

Honestly: someone asked me if I knew who Avenged Sevenfold was. My reply: "I've never heard of them." And I really haven't heard their music. It's not that I don't like then; I'm just too busy listening to my Carcass records, still. Maybe in 5 years I'll finally know who all these bands are that you guys mention in here.

But for now, I'm just going to listen to what I like.

Cindy Lauper and Devo are awesome. Devo happened to be one of the most inventive and creative bands of the time.

Lauper's music is far from crap. "Time After Time" is one of the most perfectly crafted songs in the annals of popular music.

The '90s were good because it was a backlash against the style over substance MTV music of the '80s. Unfortunately, we've gone back to style over substance again.
