Does the music of this decade suck?

There's some good music that's been on MTV and/or the radio in this decade:
The Shins

The Bravery
The White Stripes
The Feeling
The Strokes
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Franz Ferdinand
Modest Mouse
Coldplay
The Sounds

(fixed it for ya)
I could make a huge list for great bands this decade, but sadly very few of you would know who they are just because they are not on the radio or mtv.

Sigur Ros
Death Cab For Cutie
Jack's Mannequin
Mae
Saosin
Mew
As I Lay Dying
Dragonforce
Underoath
Copeland
Anberlin
Radiohead
Jimmy Eat World

I said it once and i'll say it again..

THIS GENERATION OF MUSIC SUCKS!!

I like them. I'd also add Bloc Party, The Dresden Dolls, and The Hush Sound to that.

i believe music quality in every genre is going downhill with some exceptions. it's true, this is one of the worst decades for music, period. it's all about the old school, now that was some good ****! :yay:

Please. It's a group of over-sexed women with mediocre songs. The difference is that nobody is telling us that the Pussycat Dolls are the new Beatles.

I'm going to go ahead and say you're under 18:dry:

How can you tell us that 'today's music' offers nothing new if you don't listen to it?

I will agree that a great deal of modern mainstream music is terrible, but to say that 'today's music' sucks is just stupidity. You may have to dig deeper than in past decades, but there is still good new music out there. Go check out artists like Sufjan Stevens, Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire, and Blue Scholars for some very good non mainstream stuff.

I like Modest Mouse, they rock pretty hard.

Yeah, but in those decades it was mostly older people who didn't like young people. The young people in this generation are even critical their music scene, which says a lot compared to other generations.

Exactly! Exactly! I'm only 22 years old, I'm not some geriatric. And I know plenty of other people my age who are as equally critical of todays music.

Which begs the question, who the hell is buying all the crap that is out now?

You just murdered your credibility. One of the worst bands in history.

Ride
My Bloody Valentine
Catherine Wheel
Lush
Th' Faith Healers
Seam
The Swirlies
Slint
Chapterhouse
The Stone Roses
The Charlatans
Slowdive
Lamb

All good bands from the 90's

That's a damn good question. I know plenty of people who dislike today's rock & pop. And the people I know who dig today's hip-hop/rap scene are pirating their music.

I blame the teenagers. It appears the generational gap in today's music is somewhere in the late teens or early 20s. That's amazing, considering previous generations waited until their 30s and 40s to get all ornery and old school.

Yep. I am 28, & I already feel disconnected from music. It makes me sad. See.:csad:

Nah, every decade is the same, there are two groups who say the music scenario sucks: the older people who don´t like what the young people listen to, and the people who like stuff that´s considered "cult" or "underground" and hate what´s on the top 40, which is mostly who´s complaining here. Nothing changed.

But don't you think its odd the people who complain are younger than people who complained in previous generations?

No, I hear it from just about everyone with half a lick of sense these days. The music world today is a cultural wasteland. To say thsi decade is any different from others is a bit stupid, I think. I'm 15, and I know a good number of people in my age bracket who are critcal of the music scene today. As a matter of fact, there was a poll in Rolling Stone not too long ago, asking what kind of music kids would rather listen to, and 68 % said music from previous decades (where music was vastly superior, especially in the 1960s' and 1970s'), which says a lot.

And what have we got now? A million sort of clone bands. I swear, if yet another British band comes onto the scene siting the Cure as one of their main influences, I'll murder someone.
Arctic Monkeys (hurl!!)
Snow Patrol (ewww!!)
The Killers, The Thrillers, The Hives, Franz Firdinand, etc etc etc. They're all **** or just plain bland. It is actually quite hard to tell bands apart from each other just by listening to them, which is a sad state of affairs. The indie band no longer exists. They all sound too mainstream

Holy mother ****ing ****, I thought this was just me. Finally someone who hears what I hear. I'm sick of these ****ing songs. They all sound the same. If I hear one more British band who sound the same I swear to God I'll go in ****ing sane. Lets not forget Kiaser Chiefs and Bellx1, my God when does it stop? I hear the same **** on the radio all the time, and to think people dig this stuff.

I'd like to add something else.

There is good music this decade, but it is alot harder to find than it was in previous decades. In previous decades, they actually had good music on the tv and radio. Plus I still don't think there is enough quality to match up to previous decades. I was about to mention Elliot Smith, but he did most of his stuff in the 90s.

So yeah, this decade really needs to raise its game.

Have any of you heard the song "Vessel In Vain" by Smog?

Dude, I grew up in the eighties, and I heard ALL THE EXACT SAME STUFF BACK THEN FROM PEOPLE MY AGE. And yeah, the most praised decades back then were the sixties and seventies too...

Want an example? Now people make fun of suburban white kids trying to mimicate gangsta rappers... Back then it was the same thing with punks. Kids who had no idea what it was like to grow up in working class England were using mohicans and pins and **** like that. There´s a cool scene about it in the short-lived That 80`s Show. There was this girl who loved to pose as a punk, and a guy told her, "You´re not punk, you´re retro. While you were wearing your Barbie jammies and enjoying Bay City Rollers, I was going to Sex Pistols shows"...

Yeah, but this decade it's even more prevalent. The good music is much harder to find these days. There were tons of good mainstream music in the 1980s'. Nowadays, there isn't any at all, or at least it seems that way. And the underground bands are having a far harder time breaking out then in previous decades.

Weird.
I grew up in the 80's as well and we all W.O.R.S.H.I.P.P.E.D.

Van Halen
Motley Crue
Def Leppard
The Cars
Blondie
Run DMC
DEVO
The Violent Femmes
The B-52's
INXS
The Cure
The Smiths
Tears for Fears
X
Duran Duran
The Go-Go's
Thomas Dolby
David Bowie
Genesis
The Police
The Pretenders
*goes on for hundred years*

AND liked the 60's and 70's.

The difference is that there are lots of great bands but they're all a little obscure.
In the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's, the mainstream/pop/radio/Mtv stuff was good.
