It's funny we haven't heard anything about Rhodey yet. I wonder what he would think about Tony hanging out with the cool kids, the Avengers?

I wonder how he figures into the arms race?

Hopefully the War Machine armor doesn't make an appearance. The IP armor is more than enough. No need for more Iron Man clones.

Oh, I'm sure War Machine reappears. And will fight alongside Iron Patriot, and probably at least a handful of other military-grade armors for the U.S., as well.

Why not open the movie with Rhodey being attacked and hospitalised by an unseen foe while in the WM armour.
Then we can have a little War Machine action whilst also not overcrowding the movie with two many guys running around in metal suits.
Taking Rhodey out of the picture early on would also go long way towards "putting Tony back in the cave", the way Black wants.

Because it's crappy writing. It just seems like cheap move and would leave people saying why have him at all if he's going to be shown the door like that? I'm not saying Rhodey can't be incapacitated or busy at all, but you have to be careful and have it as just an excuse to get rid of him as a character or second armoured hero.

I dunno. Opening the movie with a beloved staple of the franchise getting his ass brutally handed to him in a raw, visceral fight scene could be a really devastating way to start things off. Rhodey would still be in the movie afterwards, he'd just be bed-bound.
I think you're picturing some sort of Cyclops in X-3 cluster**** and that's not what I'm talking about.

How so? The Bane thing? nah, Rhodey wouldn't be crippled or anything. He'd just be taken out of play as War Machine.

No, I'm not. I did account for Rhodey still being present in some form. It still runs the risk of being a cheap excuse. I'm not saying that it could never work, but the idea of it doesn't work in my mind as it may in yours. Even if you have a great action scene, if you have Rhodey bed ridden or just beaten up a bit for the most part people will probably still ask why have him at all.

Though from various rumours of armoured villains and heroes I think worrying about War Machine being too much is perhaps redundant at this point. Also since Tony is going to China at some point there may be no real need for any excuse other than 'Rhodey being on the other side of the world'. Tony may be able to fly to Afghanistan (in the first movie), but I doubt the armours will be able to fly at the speed where Rhodey can just fly over when it suits him and get there in time to be of any real use.

The day after Iron Man 1 came out people started making lists on who should be in the next movie(s), Black Widow and War Machine chief among them. And when they got their wish, people instantly started complaining about these characters taking up "valuable" screentime.

:huh::huh::huh:

Maybe the next movie should be 2 hours of Iron Man talking to a mirror.

There's just no pleasing the masses these days.

I don't think the same people whining about War Machine are the same ones who were asking for him to make an appearance in IM2.

War Machine haters have their own agendas. And they're a small, but vocal, minority. The fact remains that War Machine is still a very popular character in the comics, in the 'toons, in toy lines, and in the movies.

A news report from a TV station in the area said that Don Cheadle was seen on the IM3 set yesterday. War Machine is probably in the film.

Star Don Cheadle, who plays James "Rhodey" Rhodes, was reportedly at the shoot in Cary Monday, but Downey, who plays crime-fighting billionaire inventor Tony Starke, and Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays, Starke's long-time assistant, weren't.

If AIM are in the movie, then maybe the way to have Rhodey not be War Machine is to have a storyline similar to Iron Man #215-216 where the two Iron Men are escaping from the Stark Space Station while fighting AIM and Rhodey's suit is damaged. It catches fire while he is in it, and after that he has such bad memories that he doesn't want to wear it again for a while. Of course, it wouldn't necessarily be a space station, but having Rhodey afraid to put on the suit would be a better way than just having him out of action.

Just have Rhodey get badly injured by the bad guy.

That way you take WM out of the equation, while also giving Tony emotional motivation.

And completely underwrite Rhodey as a character and give Don Cheadle a lot less reason to be on set.

Also, why are people still banging on about writing out WM/Rhodey (for the most part) when there's a ton of armoured heroes and villains rumoured?
