doommachine's art thread

I would really like to know what kind of inks you use in your drawings doom machine. I got some stuff but I hate using colored pencils, it always seems to ruin the picture for me yknow?

I'm not Doom MAchine, but do not use colored pencils but to ink it use maybe black sharpies.

Ok, it's been a while.

I use microns and sometimes brush pens, and recently I've been using brushes and quills.

It's been forever since I put up anything. For those interested, life at the Joe Kubert school is wicked fun. Intro to Animation is the worst class on the face of the Earth. Sal (who works on Venture Brothers for those interested) drives me absolutely crazy. Lettering is a more fun class. Narrative Art is amazing. Adam Kubert isn't the greatest teacher, but he brings in stuff he's working on (the upcoming Action Comics stuff with Geoff Johns, Richard Donner, and Dave Stewart) and it's just awesome. Be sure to buy those comics guys.

Anywho, I don't have a lot of time for scanning because of all the work, but here's something I managed to get onto the comp. I did this for the Methods and Materials class taught by Kim DeMulder (an amazing inker who worked on Swamp Thing) that I did about 4 weeks ago. One of the first things I've ever inked with a brush, it's a pic of Dreamcatcher. I'm working on the colors in my spare time. Enjoy!

That's looking damn good DM, glad to hear you are enjoying school.

Thanks for the comments Ghost and Ampersand.

Yeah school is gnarly.

Update.

Done yesterday with pencil on bristol. Model's name is Amanda Duncan for those interested.

If you want to see the normal version it's up on my website.

Thoughts?

I'm partial to model work, and think your drawing of Amanda looks great. I love how the tones are pretty subtle - it gives a vintage look to it. The only criticism I have is with the hair. It would be better to stick with rendering shade and shadow/highlights on the hair instead of trying to draw strands. The rest of your drawing looks totally fab but then the hair sort of spoils it.

Thanks. Yeah hair has always been something that's difficult for me, especially for females, but I'm working on it. I'm glad you like the rest of it.

WOW, you are in joe kuberts school, you are a lucky boy, i would kill to go in there, but i live in Spain, sniff sniff.

You are really improving, and i have to say that i love the inking on that "rasta" character. keep up the good stuff

Yeah it's an awesome school. If you want to go you should at least send in your portfolio and give it a shot. We've got a guy from Scotland, two from Sweeden, and theres a guy from Malasia too. Oh and I think there's someone from India also.

Thanks for the comment. :)

Yeah, thats true, at least i could give it a shot. You can see some of my stuff in my fan art thread, do you think i could get in? thank you in advance

Absolutely. You're a really talented artist with a really distinct style. And honestly, it's not as hard to get in as you might think. On the other hand, the drop-out rate is pretty high. It's more about desire and being able to get the work done than initial talent because you grow so much if you just stick with it.

Some color added digitally.

As with before, uncensored can be found at the website.

More schoolwork to come in a week when I have christmas break. I'll bombard you all. :P

Oh and as always comments and critisism is welcome.

Gah, haven't been able to scan almost anything. I did however get this scanned because I was allowed to do some of it digitally. All the blacks were done by hand, the lettering, color, and gray was all photoshop. The assignment was to do a book cover (for any book of your choice) in b+w with only a small use of color.

Comments and criticisms welcomed.

I love the colored version of that Dreamcatcher cover. Very nice...

Hey it's been a while. Remember me? haha. Anyway, thought I'd share with you guys some stuff I've been doing.

Album cover design for Advertising Illustration class:

Drawn by Damien Scott, colors by me:

Not crazy about the last panel. This was for Andy Kubert's class:

I forget the artist's name. The Walking Dead dude, colors by me:

Action figure packaging design. Digital color over scanned pencils:

100% Digital Silver Surfer drawing (just for fun):

And just because I can, the process!:

A breakdown of the steps:

1. A frantic gesture drawing. When I draw I like to kind of build it on the page. I started with a basic line of motion where the spine is and just kind of keep scribbling until it's basically the shape I want.

2. I love computers. Oh man. forget lightboxes and erasers. Just dropped the opacity of the gesture layer and drew the 'finished pencils' on a new layer! The really cool thing about this step is that once it's drawn I can go in and fix any proportion problems I may have had with the transform tool. I adjusted the head, the size of the hands, the abs got tweaked, and I redrew his right arm like 10 times before I got it to a point that wasn't ******ed-looking. The pecs and collarbone also got redrawn a few times.

3. Digital 'Inks'. This is a pretty time-consuming stage that requires much patience. I think I still prefer traditional inking, but the end result is largely the same.

4. Flat color added so a selection can be made of it and I don't accidentally color outside the lines.

5. A background tone is added so my eyes don't go crazy and so I can see better how the colors will relate to each other. The beginnings of rendering and the secondary light source is also added.

6. Background gradients, highlights, more rendering, color tweaks, all the little fun bits and lastly the signature and it's done!
