Doomsday is today!

I just wish they would've had all the Heroes at the funeral.

I know they didn't want it to be connected to any other past cartoon, and maybe they didn't want it to be seen as an extension of JL, but it didn't have to be, everyone knows Superman knows other heroes and it would be only fitting to have them at his funeral, but I think the main thing is they wanted it to seem like he was the Earth's only Super Hero, and to make the feeling of his loss and absence more pronounced, which you do get the feeling of during the Toyman attack, you feel like oh crap, there's no one else around, how the hell do they deal with this situation now?! Yikes!

Still I can't complain, this movie is just so great to me, man I hope they do The Long Halloween, like I've heard, if done this well, it'll rock. Can't wait to see some lone Batman movies, he hasn't had any good cartoons since Batman TAS went off the air, and he was in JL and JLU but I mean just a BATMAN adventure, no other heroes needed except maybe his sidekicks.

New Frontier looks to be just as good, oh man I love what DC is doing wwith their dvds, I could care less what happens with Singer's stupid movies and Nolan's boring Bat films, I'm happy with these dvds as long as they stay this well done, and come from the great source material of the Comics, and not some reimagined garbage crapped up with 'realism'.

Realism doesn't belong in a comic Book Movie, only Fun, faithfulness, and a good story, with a good cast.

Some of the best moments were, Kevin Smith - 'Yeah like we really need him to take down a robot Spider. Laaaame.' :yay:

Lex's twisted moment with the Kryptonite Glove and the evil clone.
'Green and Red, the colors of Christmas and you're on the naughty list!'

I loved the Robot, he was great.

It was just nice to finally see a modern Superman story. It was almost strange to see. Now, I love Superman TAS, but it was great to just get right into a story without an origin bogging it down and, something taken from a modern comic book was so nice to see.

Favorite parts of the movie:

Kevin Smith line: damn that was hilarious.

The part in which doomsday fought under the sewers: Such a nod to Superman II with Zod.

"Dark" Superman on the Statue with the lightning: Very Frank miller.

The end with Clark helping with her spelling problem.

and the "End of a Golden Age" newspaper headline.

All in all it was a fantastic movie. Lex played as an arrogant prick genius, which is exactly like he should be. I loved the "Cure" for diseases part.

It had a lot of nods to Superman the Movie, Superman 2 and other things. I liked how they did the Superman in the Batman pose on the statue.

And it kicked the crap out of Singers soap opera. Even the suit was the classic suit. Stupid Singer.

And smith finally got his revenge on Peters. I think that rocks.

Don't get me wrong. It wasn't perfect. I would have loved to see Doomsday kicking the crap out of the JLA. And the heroes at his funeral. I also wish it was cut and storyboarded more like a real movie....with dramatic pauses, etc. But I am just happy it is here...and it kicks SR's a$$ all over town.

Have you noticed that the neighborhood buildings and layout during the saving the cat from the tree scene is the same as the saving the cat from the tree scene in Superman The Movie?

i think a lot of people didnt even get the spider joke. they thought hey its kevin smith. he is a comic fan thats why he is there.

noooo. it was about the big spider and superman fighting the big spider.
i think it was a briliant joke.

the fights were good. they are incredible if you havent seen S:TAS. if you have then there is nothing new.they really didnt do nothing new and nothing that would stand out. to bad.

they changed some designes. so i was really hoooooooooping that superman would get hes shoulders. yeah i said it. it is extreme dumb that superman doesnt have shoulders. i think it is very important to make him look powerfull.
teh cheeks were also bad IMO because they made him look old.
they also cahnged a little the suit. they wanted to make the blue suit look like it is shiny. but it was a bad job. they should only used some dark shadows. the bright lines were terrible.

lois lanes voice was very bad.

ohhh and i dont like the long hair. i know that this is from the comics but it looked stupid and it didnt make sense to a guy who doesnt know everyting from the comics.

p.s. wasnt this a movie about supermans death? if i remember correctly he didnt die

this is taking far longer than expected to end up on youtube...

HAHAH HAHHAHAAHAH

well thank god for my two friends who have good internet connections and thank god that they like comicbook movies and cartoons

:woot::cwink:

bad film. poor storytelling. awful translation.

watched it last night and while the fighting was truly spectacular the film overall is not. disliked the protrayal of Lex (though not as much as Spacey's) and Lois done by Heche was wrong.

i didn't mind the art so much. it's the continuity in the story that bugged me. why bring doomsday to space to bring him back down to earth? what brought kal-el back? he just needed to sleep for a bit? odd.

there's more. but meh, a big pass on it.
was thinking DC was all over this but it's a poor adaptation of a property that coulda been translated. more folk need to take a page from Rodriguez/Miller and what was done with Sin City. you could follow that film with the book, turning the pages...COOL!

WB owns DC and the level of quality control on this slipped.
it looked good, sounded great - the rest is...

For a stand alone movie I liked it. Like others would have been nice to see cameo's from other Superheroes at the funeral.

And the only real ***** I have is wtf was it with the trying to give hime cheeks? I mean it looks like Supes was in a bad Kryptonite Knife fight and got his face sliced up. Everytime I saw him I couldnt get past his face how messed upn it looked. I mean isnt Supes a handsome man? I mean damn come on now why mess with his face that way.

This may be tainted because I got woken up by a little kid punching me in the balls this morning.

So I bought it. It does have some great moments and nice reimagining of elements of the story from the Superman mythos, but overall, color me disappointed. For some reason, I've come to expect more from Bruce Timm, and in recent years am starting to think that he's highly, highly overrated in this field.

Let's start with the good: The scale of the film is awesome, and it has the kind of action that we've been waiting to see since forever. I liked "Evil" Superman (A decent version of the Eradicator), although I didn't appreciate Superman killing him. I liked the fact that Superman and Lois are an item now, and Superman's reluctance to reveal that he's Clark Kent, and Lois figuring it out anyway was a nice change in storytelling. I really liked the fact that Doomsday felt like a threat, that he actually killed people, that he gave Superman a run for his money.

But this is all obvious stuff. And there's nothing in this film that didn't feel really obvious. No clever angles explored beyond Lois and Superman...just nothing. Though the story itself I have few problems with, I didn't like the overall story execution. The Doomsday/death plots were just too rushed, too piecemeal. Superman dies and his funeral speech is one sentence? There's no view of how his death affects the world outside Metropolis? There's no exploration of how Metropolis reacts while the battle is going on? Are you kidding me?

Superman's face looked horrible. Absolutely horrible, to the point where it was a distraction. If you're going to age him, at least do something that looks vaguely anatomically correct.

Luthor's dialogue, was, for the most part, atrocious, but I was especially disappointed with his complete lack of motivation in this movie. Ok, he hates Superman...but why? Ok, he wants to be the one who does Superman in, and clearly has a personal stake in things...but why? Apparently he was just a crime boss (though we never see ANY of his employees except Mercy lite) who sold black market weapons and not much else in terms of ambition. Boring.

Lois's investigative aspects were good, but mostly obvious stuff. Her voice was annoying, lacking the spunk Lois Lane needs to have. And her attempts at emoting just fell flat. But then, so did Martha Kent's. And where's Pa Kent? Is he dead in this quasi movie/comic/animated series continuity?

Why was Jimmy Olsen suddenly an amoral *******? I get what they were trying to do...but come on.

The Kevin Smith cameo was completely unneccessary. Maybe they should have actually taken more from his script to make this more interesting (Luthor building the Shadowcaster, relationship aspects, etc) and less from that stupid "Giant Spider" element people like to mock so much.

As for the the death/rebirth itself: I don't think I've ever seen so much life sucked out of it in a script adaption. There's never an explanation for Superman's return, and that grates, but what bothered me more was that there's never a moment of doubt that Superman is going to come back to life. I mean, he stays in that grave for all of the funeral and then bam, he's gone. You can see him literally healing in the Fortress, etc. You know he's going to come back. He's dead for all of five minutes, which removes almost all the punch of his absence. And is there a particular reason Lex had Superman's clone punch his way out of the ground right where Superman was buried?

It could have been a lot better. It wouldn't have taken much effort. And I'm not asking for FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND and THE REIGN OF THE SUPERMEN, either. You could never deliver all that in a two hour movie, let alone a shorter one. But I fully believe a kickass DEATH OF SUPERMAN movie could have been made that streamlined the story. This made an attempt, but ultimately fell short.

hmmm... guess I won't be buying this one.

That's exactly what I expected from a straight to DVD animated movie based on one of the greatest superman stories ever told. I had absolutely no hope that they would make it anything other than mediocre at best. Mask of the Phantasm remains the best animated DC flick ever produced. Thanks for your review. It confirmed my own suspicions. Guess I will just download it off the interweb and save myself some doe and the disappointment of buying another lack luster superman film.

lol never mind the thousands of people supes wiped out trying to stop doomsday.

LOL what about the I dont want to be just a muscle bound freak I want to be a brain too and cure cancer. Damn it ok I cant cure cancer let me go back to just being the strong guy.

II got the dvd last night and loved it. Watched it twice and I'm gonna go back and just watch the two main fights in a bit.

I wished it was a bit longer but as it stands I think it's great.

I thought it was good...it had problems, but it was overall good.

I think it needed to be longer. I am still hoping my dream of a live-action trilogy based on this story will happen someday.

It was good, but still a bit disappointing. The best part of the movie was Superman's fight with Doomsday. And really, the whole thing started to teeter out for me after Lois talked to Martha. Lois spilling her guts to Supe's mom was a more touching scene than the actual funeral.

Timm has done better movies. Mask of the Phantasm proves he can do animated films that rival the live action counterparts, but Superman: Doomsday just fell short.

And I agree with all the people who said Anne Heche's Lois sounded... off. I could tell she was trying too hard to make Lois sound like some streetwise black/white noir film dame. A prime example is how she delivers the line "I'm not here to go clubbing, Jimmy. I here to talk." I half-way expected her to say "nyah, see" and talk about life as a tough broad with a great set of gams, then smoke a cigarette and disappear into some back-alley fog.

I just watched this the other day and I was quite impressed despite all the character designs and different voice actors. I barely even noticed it was Alec Baldwin and Anne Heche doing the voices of Superman and LL although I would have preferred Tim Daly and without a doubt Dana Delaney. I'm also not certain why they used the charcter design for Terry's girlfriend from Batman Beyond for Lois. It's really too bad this film didn't end with the death of Superman. The could have come out with a second dvd where he is ressurrected but I understand the business side of it. Overall this was the best Superman story since the original TAS ended.
