Dormammu - the dread thread

I think the giant-head-thingy was floating... Don't remember the voice. But the face was kinda sliced in the middle. And it kept... flipping on itself? It's hard to describe. The colors were purplish. With glitter. I don't know. I was high. Maybe this thing isn't even in the movie.

Anyway. It didn't look like Dormammu to me.

I heard somebody describe its face like the creature from Super 8, now you mention the slice down the middle. There are barely any clear images of it, so here's a sculpt.

It looked like the stones around the eyes of Kaecilius and the Zealots. Always shifting around on itself. But it was very much Ditko's Dormammu. Except made out from the cut stones from the Zealots's eyes and brimming with dark and purple/blue energy. If it's head was wrapped in flames no one would argue what it was. It was obviously the lord of the Dark Dimension. No question about that.

I mean on his IGN interview, Scott Derrickson revealed that Kaecilius was in contact with a huge Dr Strange villain straight from the comics that he couldn't name. Now we know that Kaecilius went to the Dark Dimension. It's crystal clear IMO who the giant Ditko like head was, in the middle of the Dark Dimension.

Did it have a voice at all?
EDIT: I can also understand why they would want to shift the colour scheme and look. Too close to Ghost Rider otherwise.

Excellent choice. I saw a play with him in it. The whole five minutes revolved around him learning to walk and his movements throughout were like a complex dance. I never truly thought of him as a dancer type actor up until seeing that. Although I had a feeling from another CGI character he intriguingly twisted into life. I think in terms of CGI characters, he's a lot like Serkis. They seem to have the same level of intensity to body movement focus which I think, although I don't know for sure, is what is absolutely needed here. Amazing choice.

Dormammu actually felt like the marvel universe's answer to galactus which was intriguing. Can't wait to see more of him. Casting Benedict as him was genius

I can't see that. Silver.
If you check out the Thor threads, Taika had what everyone thinks is a Celestial's helmet, they're more Galactus-like than Domammu is. They were even noted as being from the previous Universe in Guardians of the Galaxy.

sorry, posted spoilers, just deleted them.

I enjoyed the depiction of Dormammu - as a bit petty really, but also his enormous size and cosmic might. It was Derrickson reinforcing that there was no way Strange could overpower him - and it took an infinity stone (also, great placement of the time stone, nicely done) to force him to a draw.

I liked the rippling effect, kind of like a flame (or at least the lines we see on Dormammu's burning face, in the classic comics). I mean, the flames are meant to be a mystic flame, not physical ones, so I liked that his face rippled as if it was giving off power, but wasn't necessarily hot.

I wish they'd elaborated a little more on the Ancient One's connection to the Dark Dimension - clearly she'd used the ritual, but for how long etc. really that was the movie's main weakness that the supporting cast weren't well fleshed out (although superbly acted !).

Danny Boyle's Frankenstein, I guess?

Eh. Thanos is an alien warlord who, while powerful (given how Ronan fears him in GOTG), is a complete p***y compared to Dormammu, whom the movie describes as the ruler of the Dark Dimension. He's comparable to a god.

Granted though, Thanos could probably waste Dormammu if he had the Infinity Gauntlet.

I mean, look at how Strange was able to trap Dormammu in that Time Loop just using the Eye of Agamotto, which was revealed to be Inifinity Stone. If one gem could do that, what about five?

Although
he didn't actually "defeat" him, according to sources who saw the movie. He merely trapped him in a time loop

Yes that's what happened. I guess nearly anyone could get trapped by that.

Yes he did. And wow, I didn't know that. Works really well.

He looked a bit CGI to me but still wicked. I was not expecting to see him!

Okay, going to have to use the spoiler tags here....

Here's my bet, Dormammu vs Thanos (without any of the infinity stones)
would not even be close, Dormammu would utterly wipe out Thanos without too much trouble.

For that matter I doubt Odin or any other character we've seen so far in the MCU could stand against Dormammu one on one.

Thanos with one infinity stone, or maybe 2 would be a decent battle - I mean
Dormammu appeared to pretty much have all the power of the Dark Dimension at his command (so he had the power of an entire universe at his beck and call, a really weird, trippy, messed up universe, but suffice it to say he was a godlike cosmic entity).

So, If the battle took place inside the Dark Dimension, I would still give it to Dormammu.

Thanos + the infinity gauntlet and all six stones..... well I think he'd have enough power to destroy Dormammu, and the Dark Dimension, I mean doesn't that pretty much make him completely omnipotent (not just a god, but actually God) with power over all time, space, matter, energy and psychic stuff?

As for Dr Strange, and how he "defeated" Dormammu - well "defeated" doesn't really accurately describe what happened.

Strange really forced Dormammu into a stalemate by using the time gem (Eye of Agomotto) to create a time loop (which reset itself every time Dormammu KILLED Strange, which looked pretty effortless really). So he used an infinity stone plus a clever stratagem to force a draw, which Dormammu pretty much withdrew due to boredom and frustration.

Also, I suspect that the time stone was possibly the only one which could actually defeat Dormammu, because, as Strange said he " brought time with him." when he took the Eye into the Dark Dimension (because time doesn't exist there). So the Eye had a power that Dormammu was unprepared for.

I liked that a lot, that Dormammu was so powerful that Strange could never hope to challenge him, but instead had to rely on his wits.

Yes it was handled really well.

Very pleasantly surprised to learn that that was BC as Dormammu.

The whole time I was thinking - call Silver Surfer for help lol...would be a sight to behold to see him end up in the MCU as part of the cosmic world I feel like some of his villains could probably defeat Dormammu - Galactus, Mephisto, Cyttorak, other cosmic beings like The Living Tribunal, The Beyonder, Eternity

So do you guys think...

that Kaecilius could return as a human host for Dormammu? I know that Cumberbatch played him in the Dark Dimension, but as I'm sure we'll see him again, perhaps he'll take a different form on Earth. And if so, perhaps he'll use Kaecilius' body when he returns. I think that would be cool, since it would give us more Mads Mikkelsen.

Hmm. So the scene from the IMAX preview where Strange talks to a giant floating head was NOT in the movie. Maybe it's a deleted scene. Or just some kind of pre-visualization/special effects test for Dormammu.

Guess that could be cool. Would like to see Dormammu in humanoid form at some point whatever form that is, but if it's Kaecilius would be good to see Mads get a proper opportunity to show what he can do.
