Doubting the Ghost Rider Movie

This will probably fall into the Punisher/Spawn/Hellboy catagory of demonic heroes typically less popular amongst the overall movie going public but with more people seeing it just because it is Nic Cage.

Nic Cage will do a lot for this film, more than if it was any other actor. He's respected more than Thomas Jane or Ben Affleck and people that aren't even comic fans will be attracted to this by Cage because GR doesn't neccessarily have to be a comic book film. It could even work in the popular horror genre. Really, I think it is more mainstream and versatile than it looks.

You would need to define failure. The problem I see is that it's a big gamble making movies based off of non-mainstream characters. The percentage then of failure increases. IMHO even a Silver Surfer movie may have a higher risk of failure than a spiderman 4-5 or whatever. Look at Punisher, the first attempt was a laugher, the second was better. Hulk a mainstream character, the movie wasn't that good, but watchable. Its all risk. Elektra IMHO was a waste. Character is spotty, actress that plays character is spotty = tanked. Outside of the comic fan crowd, do you think a Witchblade movie would do well? Or even a Namor movie? Do you think DC could make a buck off of a Flash feature? Realizing how short lived the TV show was. Lets see DC make a Hawkgirl or Green Lantern, see what happens.

The further off the main stream, then you have to bank up the actors. GR needed Cage, love him or hate him, he has draw. Lord of War was a very underrated movie, but I can see how alot of people wouldn't like a movie like that. But I thought it was pretty solid. But GR needed Cage for draw. Do you think one of those American Pie or Entourage actors would have more pull than Cage?

I think the FF made a few mistakes with casting. Mr. Fantastic and Johnny were two guys I never heard of. I think both could have been better cast. In the case of Superman returns, you can get a relative newcomer (routh)because the character can carry the actor, just like Bale in Begins.

It will be interesting. Critics in general are not kind to comic movies, so you really have to look past those guys.

I've said it before and I'll say it now. It's all about the marketing, I've shown the new trailer and sent links to it to people who know little or nothing about GR and they all absolutly loved it and will be going to see it. He is just such a visually amazing character I think people will be drawn to the movie.

I think it will be a hit for 2 reasons.

Nic Cage

and the cool central character himself

Like I said, this doesn't even look like a comic book movie to me and to mainstream audiences, they probably wouldn't even know. It looks like a Nicolas Cage movie based on a horror/fantasy/action concept with some good American motifs like motorcycles, deserts, and even Peter Fonda the Easy Rider.

I mean, Pirates of the Caribbean has outlandish characters battling supernatural Pirates. That's not a superhero film and that's a hit.

GR might not make money.....ONLY because its GR , a not so popular comic.

but then again look at DD or SinCity

Yes but Johnny Depp AND Orlando Bloom right now are very hot properties. Its also a movie based on a very popular Disney theme ride.

To be honest I am a little worried in regards to the amount it will make at the box office and then everyone talking about what a failure it was. I love GR, he's been my favorite comic character ever since I first saw that flaming skull years ago. As previously mentioned it's going to have a lot to do with the marketing. The general public isn't familiar with GR. I showed the trailer to several of my co-workers who had no idea who GR was and they thought it looked great and wanted to know more. Having Nic Cage involved won't hurt either. I think it will be great and the potential is there for a smash, but I still worry.

I don't think movie are DESTINED to fail. They just do or they don't

Don't worry guys if most of the MARVEL fans go and watch the movie it will do fine.

To be honest with you if it gets a marketing campaign similar to F4 it can end up doing just fine both domestically and overseas.

I am guessing $300 worldwide because it will be an AWESOME ACTION MOVIE WITH COOL SFX, Nic is a bankable star when it comes to action movies and it has the usual MARVEL logo which draws audiences.

One thing i know is that there is no way this movie has a budget of $130 million. NO WAY!!! At most it maybe $100 million.

First off..The budget has been confirmed to be around $125 million. The trailer(s) seem to be converting many of the naysayers and the trailer will likely be attached to the vast majority of the copies of X-Men 3. I fully expect The Rider to set a new record for President's Day weekend. (It is opening during that particular weekend right?)

They're hot properties because of that movie (well, maybe LOTR helped a bit). And the theme ride thing doesn't mean a huge hit (The Haunted Mansion sucked major balls).

But anyway, i think GR will do good but not great, around 100-125 million, with some luck 150. Maybe more internationally. It'll do good, but i'm not sure we'll see a sequel.

Really? I disagree, if Johnny Depp doesn't have that part I don't think it does half of what it did. Depp was hot before the movie and even a lackluster Wonka didn't cool him off.

Let me start by saying that I am a hugeeee fan of :ghost: and anything comic/marvel based, and I may add that upon watching the Ghost Rider trailer today i thought it looked un-freaking-believable, (anybody else laugh at JB's smile after he says lets ride before he turns into gr?). Upon saying this I have a feeling that regardless of everything this film is just doomed to fail, this may mean box office wise or as a film in general?

Let's hear some peoples thoughts.

Well its been my gut feeling all along since day 1 if they made a Gr movie it will kick the boxoffice ass big time since 1975 when I first discoverd the comic and yes it will, do very well at the box office and DVD sales ect!!:ghost:

I say this is gonna be a huge hit. MSJ has done an awesome job and when this teaser hits with x-men I think all hell will break loose. I have shown this to about ten people at work (I love the high speed internet here) most of whom don't read comics, and they all thought it was extremely cool and all said they would definately go see it.

I hope it is too and that this is the 1st of a franchise
right now though it seems most people here at SHH liked the trailer w/ just a handful who didnt (and some of those were people who never posted here at the Hype). however, indie "counter-culture" sites like CHUD, Joblow, and some others are ripping it to shreds. there is also a rock poster site that i visit every so often called gigposters. they post about all kinds of stuff....they HATED the trailer. about 3 pages of negativity on bad cgi, Cage, the director, and a few gay references.
i really dont understand all the hate coming from these guys...really dont. i mean did we see the same trailer they did? is it because it didnt have rock music? talk about a jaded audience...sheesh! maybe the film is lost to those jokers but i have a feeling that this will do well w/ the public. the trailer is very slick and gives me the impression that the movie could still be a contender for a summer release. a few more hours and we will know soon enough...

BIGGUN I woulnt worry about the the flameing trollers they are Ignoreant fools that have no Idea lol!

It is indeed opening on President's Day weekend. The current #1 is 50 First Dates with just over 45.1 million, followed by (speak of the devils, heh!) #2 Daredevil with $45,033,454 and #3 Constantine with $33,624,407.

Whether GR breaks the record or not (though that would be awesome), I do think it'll easily be Top 3 based on visuals/Nic Cage alone.

Of course I'm saying this with no real idea of what it's competion will be.

I'd love to say it'll be a massive hit and start it's own religion, but I'm not sure if I trust the general public that far. In the end I think it will be a reasonable box office success, and absolutely MURDER on DVD sales. That's where Hollywood gets their money nowadays anyway.

My impretion is the general public will love it 1 Ghost Rider is visualy stunning 2 the storyline is the classsic good vs eviel, powerful love story thats up close and personal ect. Showing GhostRidrer is human to and full of faults like all humanity.

I hope I didn't come across as negative. I'm just playing cautious as I have a bad habit of vastly overestimating the potential success of flicks I have an interest in.

Really I just wish they would have had enough lead time to shoot for a Halloween/Christmas '06 release. Not only because we'd have the movie that much earlier but I can't shake the feeling that the studio is underestimating it a little with a Feb. release. That's not to say they don't have faith in it; they gave MSJ the extra time and cash to perfect it, so I know they think they're onto something...just seems like they're playing things a little too safe. But that's probably just me (I'd like to see Ghost Rider kicking Harry Potter's ass myself^^)

Hey no prob Ive always been an opptimest with Ghost Rider myself Iam just stateing what I see and feel and am going by my gut feeling here everyone ive talk to and has seen all the trailers loves it all the way. not knocking you or youre input sorry if I came across that way cheers:)

Well, i havent seen the trailer yet, but i have seen the screenshots, and certain parts of the trailer on this board, and i think this movie is going to be amazing, i'm more hyped for this than any other marvel movie thats has come out in the last few years or that is coming out soon. But i dont think it will be a hit at the box office. People overestimate fanbases. Look at Serenity, Firefly has a large cult fan base, and people thought that fan base would gain the movie a lot of money. But the movie only made $40 million at the box office, and i guarantee you 90% of Firefly went to see the movie more than once. Mainstream audiences are stupid, they always have been, and they find it hard to suspend belief sometimes, so GR may just be a step too radical for them. I hope i'm wrong, as i do think the first movie will be great and i would to see this as a franchise, but we'll see.

That trailer is bad ass, much better than the (unofficial) one I saw last year!
