@Mad Ones Haha you side stepped everything I wrote. Nicely done.

This is about Ghost in the Shell and from this point on the race issue is over on here. I'm including myself in this.

We've had race completely derail these anime to live action threads before. In fact I was here for that in the very beginning with Dragonball Evolution.

It's not happening again.

So this is what I'm going to propose. Make a thread about Hollywood racism or whatever you want to call it and discuss that social issue there.

Any more posts derailing this thread like the ones we see here (I'm including myself). Will simply be deleted as it literally takes away from the subject at hand and that is Ghost in the Shell being turned into a live action film.

If you want to talk about the social and race implications of it then simply create a new thread in the misc film section.

That's the final word on the matter.
New page bump.

I'm excited. Futuristic political espionage, advanced warfare, sexy robots, guns and actions.

Can't wait. ;)

Well I for one am excited to see Michael Pitt in a genre film after coming off his work in Hannibal. The guy's a jerk, but damn if he isn't talented.

You think we will get some of the actual AI Spider Robot things. I forgot what they were called, drawing a blank. Someone help me out here lol. I'm gonna have to watch my Ghost in the Shell movies again to get refreshed again. It's been a while.

Well if one of my first jobs was being with an naked Eva Green a good amount of the time, I would find everything else pointless and be a jerk as well. :o

So is the whole "they are going to use cgi to give them Asian features" true? Cause I hope not.

Wasnt a fan of them personally but I think a lot of fans loved them in SAC so may well make an appearance, maybe The Major/or whomever the main lead character is will have one as a sort of helper/comedy relief.

Depends what type of tone they are going for with this film. A Hard R more serious tone like the original movies or the slightly lighter tone of SAC and a softer rating. I dont know if this has been said yet?

based off the director i am going with darker tone

I have no horse in this race nor do I have great knowledge about Ghost in the Shell other than its basic premise, but it just seems odd to me to seeing a clearly white actress playing a character with as Japanese a name as you can get. It's like who are you trying to fool? And the news they tested CGI ethnicity facial alterations is just face palming of the highest order.

I don't know where this film is suppose to be set, but if it's set in Japan it makes zero sense to me to not use an Asian actress. If it's set in the US then why keep the Japanese name of the character? If they know it's going to cause such controversy simply Americanise everything and be done with it, it's not like Asian concepts haven't been Westernised before.

Sorry about my earlier posts. I truly apologize for it.

I didn't meant to spew hatred. I sound like an ignorant fool.

Since this is a Hollywood western production, they are free to cast whoever they wish to.

I fully support the casting decision.

Sorry about my earlier posts. Hope this movie turns out good. Can't wait for it.

I don't think we have a name yet. They have only called her the Major so far.

They can get away with just calling her "The Major", it's used in place of her name often enough across the franchise.

Same. I was really skeptical at first, but the first photo got my attention. Hope they don't mess what became classic in GITS.

In anime series majority of time she is called Major. She works in special unit Section 9, and she is reffered by her title which is also her nickname from her unit members and her chief Aramaki. She doesnt go by her private name and her personal life isnt important. My guess, her name should be only mention in private files.

I somewhat give it a pass as I said before since her body isn't originally her own, so if her original name is Kusanagi they can technically skirt it. Similar to the other race lift instances we've dealt with, I don't blame ScarJo as she was offered the role and just took it, but I doubt she's some kind of weird weeaboo anime junkie that cares that much, lol.

Keep it just Major.

But what about Bato? He can pretend he's Asian, since we don't see his eye features.

Batou in the series was always weird. He's Japanese (at least in his nationality and name), yet he's always had that European look and build to him. I suppose they could say he was adopted by Japanese family or something, but really other than his name I don't think they'll make a big deal out of it.

Scarlett isn't a "take the money and run" actress, she's striking a balance between indies and big projects. I don't see her as taking action movies where she's playing a variation on a role she's done before. The Major is a far cry from Natasha Romanoff, for example.

I think she checked out the 1995 film when her agent was fielding the offer, and liked the story potential of doing GITS as a live-action movie.
