Driving from Georgia to California, where should I stop at?

Remember when driving to California, the important thing to know is that you've gone far enough west when you hit the ocean.

I've done the drive from Dallas to California, if I may make a suggestion, try to avoid Texas as much as possible, unless seeing a lot of Dairy Queens in the middle of no where is your idea of a fun scenic route. It just gets depressing after a day of nothing but DQ's.

not if you get a double dipped butterscotch cone at each one

Only if you wanted to spend the rest of your life, trying to make it through Texas, seriously, it wouldn't be possible to stop at every single one along the way, and ever make it out of Texas. You would probably never know, since you're a Californian like me, but DQ is the Texas stop sign, like that's their official slogan there....scary.

I could make it.

Moab and Bryce Canyon, Utah are breathtaking.

Austin, Texas is a great place if you enjoy live music. Memphis and Nashville are as well, from what I hear.

BBQ in Kansas City would be something to remember.

If you've never been to Vegas in your life, it's worth the trip. Tour the Grand Canyon while you're there.

Depending on what part of Cali you're headed for, the Big Sur and Giant Redwoods outside of San Francisco are beautiful. Swing into SF and check out the city while you're at it.

L.A. is a hell hole.

San Diego's nice, if not a little bit boring. Good place to launch for some deep sea fishing, though.

Dallas is a cool town with a lot to see and do.

Area 51 is kind of kitschy and fun to visit.

Phoenix is a fun town. Stay away from there in the summertime. HOT!!!!!

I've never been there, but you'll be going almost directly through New Orleans. To not stop there would be a crime.

I'm guessing you're going to be on leave before reporting to a station in California somewhere?

Im driving from Georgia to California in a couple months and I'm wondering what would be some cool cities/places to stop at? So far all I can think of is New Orleans, L.A, Hollywood, and Las Vegas... one of my friends says to stop in Houston but I dont know whats cool over there...
If your black don't stop in any hillbilly areas, you might end up on the end of a noose.:woot:

If your white, don't stop in the ghetto, you may get car jacked and held for randsom. :oldrazz:

If your any other race...your ****ed either way.:o

Where to Find the Weird and Wacky

If you've ever wanted to see Elvis's childhood home, or stand at the exact spot where James Dean died in a car accident, you might want to check out DriveAbouts, a nifty landmarks guide developed by Hampton Inn & Suites. DriveAbouts allows you to search all 50 states for famous and infamous locales, from the house used in The Brady Bunch to Frank Lloyd Wright's home in Chicago.

Some of the things on the list of things to see.

Arizona Meteor Crater

Black Dahlia Murder Case

Led Zeppelin Album Cover

Birthplace of the Egg McMuffin

Patty Hearst Abduction Site

Brady Bunch House

When you hit the ocean, keep driving into it

Kansas City (Missouri) is kinda out of your way but I really liked it there last summer.

I wish Georgia and Alabama would have a fight over who is more racist and who beats there wives more.

Which highway are you going to take? You didn't say where in GA or where in CA you are traveling to. Let's say you're going to LA. You're probably going to take 40...so you'll pass through...

Birmingham - I've never stopped there
Memphis - Graceland
Little Rock - Nice town but the highway getting there looks crappy
Oklahoma City - Didn't seem special to me...
Amarillo - *snore* Scenery starts to get boring and pretty much just desert
Albuquerque - same ol desert scenery
Flagstaff - pretty small town and nice in the winter for skiing...but not much else
Kingman - get off of 40 and take 93 up to Vegas. Stop by Hoover Dam for pics and then party in Vegas. Then take 15 to LA.

If you're going through those cities you should google things to do there. Last time I drove cross country I bought a GPS that had points of interests. It came in very useful. That way when I stopped in a city to go sight seeing I never had any problems navigating my way around unfamiliar territory.

Now me? I'd dip down to 10 so I could pass through...

New Orleans - little bit of a detour from 10...but the hand grenades are worth it
Houston - I have friends there
San Antonio - I have friends there too and the Riverwalk is nice
El Paso - Very old city but I have friends there and Juarez Mexico is fun
Phoenix - I love Phoenix (Tempe area) since its my old college stomping grounds (yes, friends here too) go ASU!

Dallas is better than Houston.
